1st leg

Normally I don't mind 1st leg but wasn't sure I wanted to do this leg today due to the chest. But worked out ok in the end. Definitely improvement in the lungs could be felt early on so that gave me some encouragement.

I didn't check the scale, found out afterwards it was 1:7500, things did feel bigger on the map, but didn't affect my race.

Going into 1 I was to the right of it, saw a control and went over, was unsure, lucky.

Had people in front of me then to 2 and 3, but was in map contact. Was able to use them for direction for the next few controls back up the hill. On the downhill leg to 8 I saw a few lads over to the right but was confident in where I was going. Didn't see much more of them after this.

Made the mistake of using the crossing point going to 10. Would have been sensible to stay on the track and use the bridge but then the crossing point is on the line and the line is bent via the crossing point I didn't see the other option until i'd run passed it.

Mess up 10 though climbing the hill, should really have stayed on the path, climbed and went to the other control on this gaffle. Calves also felt like they were cramping too climbing this hill. English lad + a scot here, so had someone to run after going up the hill to 11. Didn't see them again either.

12 to 15 controls were easy in the forest. To 16 I went right of the pond and then it was a bit shitty getting into the control. Also getting back out was no fun either, ended up a small bit stuck so came out the way I went in.

Long uphill for a few controls now, all the way to 20. No issue with the one after the crossing. Did the first part of the leg to 20 ok, was very unsure of myself though approaching the circle, in the right area and lucky again I think.

Last few controls downhill went fine.

My personal goal to beat Ireland 1 and 3 achieved! And overall we beat them too :-)

Achilles, left, very sore afterwards.

Overall Ireland managed to beat Wales again to retain the Celtic Cup. Successful weekend as a result.

No standing around. Timed things nicely with the jog. Wouldn’t consider it a nice day.

Being sick for the week didn't I suppose put me in a positive frame of mind ahead of the weekend but once racing I got around. Struggled early though on the hills, lungs definitely not happy.

Ok to 1 but to 2 my lack of orienteering for 3 months was obvious. Ran in the general direction with no plan. Lost some time by being distracted by the control in the put before it, but could have been worse.

Had the company of Cat Taylor to 3 and for the next loop of controls. Not so positive when she's running faster than you. Went around to 4 but some time lost cutting in too early off the path.

Definite mistake at 6. Didn't pay enough attention and followed the area I was in down to the path rather than crossing to the next reentrant.

My line after 8 to the path was probably too low too so some extra distance ran.

Executed 11 as I intended but it was a very long hill. Climbed the first part, and then there was even more of it, went on forever. Had someone pass me at the start of it so them in front of me was motivation to keep moving.

Bit scary running on the pipe to 13, didn't trust my shoes, but stayed upright.

The loop after this I found physical. Took a gel after an hour but could feel myself slowing. Winsplits has me down for a mistake to 16 but in reality I was just slow.

Thought about going back around the path to 19 but just went straight, path may have been more sensible. Left of the reservoir to 20, with the track it had to be the best option. Found the hill up to 20 tough, again tiredness. Had looked ahead and knew the route to 21 was also going to hurt as more climbing.

Executed the leg as planned, with some variance allowed for runnability. The tussocky grass I didn't enjoy, so avoiding that was my main aim as much as possible. Found the drain as planned before going down it. Looking at routegadget the GPS seems a bit off but maybe the circles aren't correct.

Again WinSplits says I made a mistake to 23, and again I didn't. Found all the ups and downs tiring so my forward momentum not good.

I definitely did miss 25 though. But saw the path and relocated from it. Maybe a small miss on 29 but at this stage all the ups and downs were not easy.

Shins complained a good bit out there as did something in the area of my left hip flexor. Was sore afterwards but couldn't be felt stretching the hip flexor so something else I presume.

As expected a good bit back overall but 3rd of the Irish, just a few seconds ahead of Josh ;-) Given my preparation I didn't expect to be in this position so I am therefore happy with my performance today. Rusty in places but no major mistakes. I probably got the worst of the weather which didn't help me when I was tired near the end. Was able to smile when I finished so I did enjoy it.

Travelling to England this evening for the SHI. Tired as optimism regarding sleep didn't happen.

Went to Muckross for some tea this morning. Saw some school kids on bikes. Reckon they are from Lough Guitane NS. I think any school bringing kids out on bikes is definitely a reason to send Erik there.

Don't feel too bad I think. Still wouldn't consider myself 100% though. 2 nights sleep though before i've to race and i'm hoping that at least 1 of them might be uninterrupted. That would help. I was optimistic going to bed last night but Erik was hungry at 3.

Getting better but not long to go before the weekend.
Quiet enough day so getting some rest.

At least I don’t feel sick. Some improvement so the drugs are probably working.

Went for a spin down to Lauragh to see Derreen Gardens. Nice place for a stroll around.
