Hill Walking 1:08:18 [2] 4.85 km (14:05 / km) +216m 11:31 / km
ahr:81 max:112 (rest day)

Erik sick overnight and his lack of sleeping was felt by all of us. In the interest of not pushing things training today I decided to postpone.

Did do this walk at work today, nice day for it.

Also got some bonus gardening done when I got home as I was locked out. Got one of the planted beds weeded.

Handy spin this evening. Headwind, definitely, on the way out, but was happy enough with how I was moving. Didn't put too much effort in, steady.

Warm despite the wind. Bit of traffic to dodge in Killarney. Lungs felt fine.

(rest day)

Another day off to help with recovery. More improvement today and less tired so training of some sort tomorrow is still on the agenda.

Had a quick look at some options for the next few weeks but nothing jumping out at me.

Just over 7 more weeks of training so not long to go...

(sick)

Taking it easy today after the weekend. Tired. I'll tick the 'ill' box still since I only finish the antibiotics tonight. Am finally starting to feel more human, shame it came a couple of days too late.

Kirkebygden

Intervals with Roar, Colm, Mark, Paul & Cillín. Lovely morning to be in the forest and feeling better than yesterday. Sickening (if you'll pardon the pun) to be running better today than when I needed to yesterday. Not recovered but recovering.

Didn't have enough maps to go around so we had turns with the maps. Nice to be able to follow.

Orienteering mostly fine, drifted left to 8. I didn't have a map for the miss on 10. So happy with this run, good to have the company to help push the pace.

Quick dip in a lake afterwards to clean off before the flight home.

Note
(sick)

Home very late, it was a long day. But despite the illness Norway was enjoyable. Was tired on the drive home, got a small bit freaked when a jeep with norwegian number plates passed me out, thought I was back in Norway for a second.

Have a rough idea for the rest of the week, take the next couple of days to recover and finish the anti-biotics, then think about getting some training done. Will put some thought into what i'm training for later in the week.

Guttersrod
WOC 2019 Middle Selection Race

This was my target for the year, whatever about WOC itself, this was the race I was focusing on.

I gave what I had in this race which was far from what was needed to get on the team. Physically I really struggled later in the course and on any hills. Felt really bad afterwards, thought it was the chest infection, but it was in fact disappointment. But not much I could do given the circumstances so can move on. This is I feel is the last attempt at WOC for me, unless I manage to become really fit in my 40s as the standard that is now needed to get on to a WOC team is very high. Looks like i'm already talking myself out of no more WOCs! Not surprised i've done that though.

Rough running to numbers 1 to 3 but got into the map ok, small miss to 1 though. 2 was fine and then to 3 I didn't take the best of routes so time lost I suspect.

Got 4 fine and line to 5 was too low, so mistake here. Paul and Nick came into the control as I found it. So tried to hang on to them to the next control. Took a better line crossing the track but then up the hill I'd no chance. 7 was grand but then mistake to 8, went to the left so lost time.

Happy with how I executed 9, the open area before it was helpful. 10 was another mistake, too far to the right of the circle, Thought I knew where I was approaching the area but even when looking for the control I was struggling to figure out what direction the crag was facing. Small miss to the left on 12, too high, and it was Conor's turn now to pass me.

He just ran away from me, I couldn't keep up, just shows the state I was in. Demoralising seeing this happen. Got the next couple ok and then through the spectator. 16 was another mistake. I did see the open hill to my left on the way but then climbed some more and ended up in the open area before relocating.

17 was time for the next Short to pass me, Ruairi this time. Got 17 and 18 mostly ok but at this stage I was fecked. Course was very physical, I made a few mistakes, nothing major, which i'm happy with for Norway, but not in the shape to race sadly.

Game with the lads. Took it easy enough, or at least tried to. To say the standard was excellent would be telling a big lie! Good fun though.

Another walk in what was not a nice a forest as the previous 2. No real issue with the few controls I went to. All made sense.

24 hours until race time. Will definitely start. A lot will be revealed in the warm up but however that goes I’ll attempt to finish if that’s going to be a sensible decision.
