Orienteering race 40:52 [5] *** 10.26 km (3:59 / km) +56m 3:53 / km

Blackrock

1st time this area used, mostly, although the course did visit an area that was part of an old map, Beaumont Park. Not sure i'm bothered with too much analysis given the type of race that it was, urban. Plan was to run hard and am happy with how I actually ran, don't think I could have done too much more. Not happy to have lost time early on but happy to see my splits in the later half of the course were on a par with Zach.

Did get caught with number 1, the planner had a tricky start, short run out to a set of steps which needed to be descended. Hard to look at a map at the same time. Part of my problem was that in my head I expected a short control for number 1, but it wasn't. Didn't chose the best route, but that happened on a few occasions. Once I had a route though I then opened up the legs. Mainly just hesitant to get going. After that my flow was better.

Planned ahead a good bit, the course wasn't technical, more about deciding on a route and then running. I did stop for a couple of seconds between 10-11 to work out 16. Had seen the control on the way to 5 but an option to get to it was hard to see. Couldn't see the route but knew there had to be one. Eventually copped it was the railway line I wanted.

I didn't pick the shortest route on a few occasions but I had no issues executing, no wrong turns.

Visited Niall Bourke's estate for 5 and then passed Bobby's on the way to 6.

I caught up with robrunner on my way to 11, passed him and encouraged him to tag along. His response was that he was on a different course, I was shocked!

Back to the car, time includes putting on dry clothes, then back to meet my mother who was minding Erik, who I then pushed around Atlantic Pond before heading back towards the car. Legs feeling ok warming down.

Note
(rest day)

Hadn’t really planned anything and didn’t find time as a result. Too busy being working on winning “Father of the Year”...perfect start to the day, take the kids to the park for some quality family time. All good parenting stuff.

Then at home before lunch i somehow managed to lock Oscar in the sitting room on his own due to a faulty door lock (I didn’t lock the door, it just managed to break after I thought I’d fixed it). Any parent want lessons on what not to do in a house with their kids, read my log. Eventually got him rescued!

And managed to put a deposit down on a new car in between.

Went out for a run once I got home. Didn’t have gear with me as wasn’t sure if I was staying in Tralee after work for something or going home. Easier to get the gear on at home rather than out of the car boot.

Legs feeling ok. Hamstring seems to be ok too. No issue running but wasn’t under pressure.

Probably more tired before running than after.

Note
(rest day)

Feeling improved but still somewhat tired. Hamstring still feeling tight. Really was a surprise when that started to hurt on Tuesday. Starting to wonder did I do something when I was asleep!

Wednesday Nov 6 #

Note
(rest day)

Not fully recovered but going in the right direction. Erik sleeping badly so i'm sleeping badly. Some improvement in left hamstring with more work done on it today.

Note
(rest day)

After making a plan yesterday I started to feel progressively worse as the day went on. Was wondering that it might have been the vomiting bug that Erik had which he passed on to Mary yesterday, but turned out to be a severe bout of exhaustion. So will need to rest for a couple of days.

Left hamstring is sore today too. Need to stretch it a bit.

Monday Nov 4 #

11 AM

Note
(rest day)

Not feeling too bad physically after yesterday, legs are alright. But not a great night sleeping wise so feeling rough as a result. Half wondering if i've caught Erik's bug but time will tell if that's the case.

Monday - Rest
Tuesday - Run
Wednesday - Bike
Thursday - Run
Friday - Run/Bike
Saturday - Bike/Rest
Sunday - Orienteering (urban race which I think i'd like to try at 100%, feeling motivated)
