Orienteering race 1:52:21 [5] **** 14.25 km (7:53 / km) +604m 6:30 / km

Carrick Mountain
Long Selection Race

Happy to have finished in one piece, that was the aim. Definitely some orienteering issues and some serious fitness issues in the 2nd part.

Handy attackpoint from the road for 1, but didn't have a clue in the felled area. So maybe close to a minute wasted.

Next few were ok. Took a straight line from the road bend to 5, passed the control on the rootstock, didn't know it would be on my course later, and thne overshot the boulder, was too high. So more time lost.

6-8 were ok, and then went around the path to 9, steep climb up. Took the path again to 10 and 11.

For 12 took the direct enough line on a bearing, but stopped short when I saw Ruairi Long searching. Found a path beyond him so like everyone else figured that was the path on the map. I did have a feeling though it wasn't the right path, didn't feel right, and was correct. So minutes shed here.

Then didn't have the legs to keep up with Ruairi.

Missed the path I wanted to 14 so ended up with a longer route, easier, but longer. Went right to 15 before. Long downhill leg to 16, felt like I was going ok but it was downhill.

Then onto the 2nd part. Some climb to start, then 18-20 were tough physically, a lot of walking! Wrong path again to 21, cut down early but knew i'd done it. Then 22 was the rootstock i'd found earlier.

Overshot 23, went a bit too far right. Used the path to get back to 24 and 25 was downhill, last bit of downhill. Legs felt like cramping between 21 and 22 earlier, and now they were really starting to hurt. Somehow went straight to 26, probably should have gone around.

Then uphill to the last 2. Mike Long in front of me so had to find the energy to get up the hill faster.

Body well and truly exhausted afterwards. My HR was around the average for a lot of the run, hasn't been that high for that long for a while i'd say.

Good to be back orienteering.

(rest day)

Been a while since I’ve had a pre-race rest day. Speaking of racing, was getting my gear ready for tomorrow earlier, it’s been so long it’s hard to remember what I need???

Nice morning, cut the grass after taking the lads to Muckross for a stroll/cake.

Would have preferred to do this yesterday with less of an effort today, but weather had its part to play.

Bad start as when I went to prepare the bike I noticed a flat tyre. Searched for a spare spare tube but didn't have one so went to the bike shop to get a couple. Wasn't risking a spin without one.

Nice day though for a spin but felt like a headwind on the way home.

Did ok on the climb, 10.41, but last 10-15 minutes of the spin energy seemed in short supply, something didn't feel right. Levels looked ok when I finished, not wearing watch this week as the strap was rubbing my wrist, nearly healed. They were on the way down though.

Passed a woman on a bike and a few more coming against me. But quiet enough all things considered.

Vikings S06 E18

Last episode of Vikings. But I believe there is a prequel in the works.

Went inside today as sort of damp outside, weather doesn't know if it wants to rain or not. Anyway, no harm in getting Vikings done and dusted.

Legs seemed to be spinning quickly, but got through it ok. Calves feeling fine.

Nice day for a run, probably could have worn a lighter top.

Relaxed pace, reflected in the time and HR. But that's what I need to do. Calf felt better than Sunday, I have been working on it. So if it managed 9k today, albeit flat, it might last in a forest on Sunday. Don't plan to run again before then.

Note

Last week didn't go to plan so hopefully this week will. Definitely not feeling like I did the end of last week so hopefully have recovered. I think I need to get some more sleep this week though. Upper body is still tired after 'gardening' on Saturday, cutting back the branches on the high hedges on Saturday they mustn't have liked.

Windy. Strong wind from the west/northwest, so headwind on the way out. Was looking forward to the return journey and it definitely was easy, especially the last hill up home, could feel it helping there.

Think after around 45 minutes I felt a bit flat, maybe should have done a shorter spin after last week's enforced break. So we'll see how it plays out later or tomorrow if there are any consequences.
