The plan looked good. I would head out to Granite (Planite), streamer a course, and then run it for time. Almost as soon as I arrived out there and parked, I noticed a really odd looking wisp of cloud stretching down very close to the ground. Surely it couldn't have been a tornado forming? Maybe an especially large dust devil? I watched for a little bit before it vanished, and concluded it was nothing but some random cloud bit.
However, once I finished getting ready and opened up the truck door, I heard a fireworks going off, and realized what I saw was probably the aftermath of some kind of a fireworks rocket. I wondered who in the world would be setting off fireworks a) illegally, up there and b) during red flag fire conditions. The answer probably had to be sub-morons.
I started streamering the controls in reverse order, and as I got to the last few controls, I could start to make out with greater and greater clarity voices up ahead. Eventually I got close enough to place the voices exactly, and put the voices and the sub-moronic behavior together. Did I really want to run through their camp, even if I talked to them first and let them know what I was doing out there and making sure they were okay with it? I didn't. I didn't even want to see them or have them see me, much less talk with them. My rule of thumb: if I see or suspect sub-moronic behavior, I stay away. It's just that simple.
So I skipped streamering the last bit of the course, improvised a new beginning, and ran the new and improved course instead.
While I was warming down afterwards, for some reason it occured to me to wonder when the World Games in Birmingham would be going on, and would they be going on right now (next year)? I hadn't heard anything about the World Games in ages and really had no idea. I checked when I got home, and saw that indeed they would be in progress, but that the whole affair had been shifted back a year to 2022. It still seems somewhat odd/funny to think that a "big" (no idea of how big or not big the rest of the world sees the World Games) orienteering competition is slated for Alabama in mid-summer, but obviously orienteering wasn't the driving consideration for dates/place selection, and so be it. Be thankful that O' is even included and all that!
Montgomery is not Birmingham, but for the circumstance at hand, it will have to do:
