Note

Another good race today but one stupid glitch. Didn't stay on my compass and ran to what I thought was the right clump of green #13. Lost 1:30 min so not great, another 30sec mistake #17 with a bad ending to my route and being unsure in the control circle. Felt pretty strong today, especially in the end and managed to bring myself back to 13 sec of the lead. My leg felt even better than yesterday but still slightly sore. Nice course but would have liked at least one longer leg.

Orienteering warm up/down 15:00 [2] 2.52 km (5:57 / km) +70m 5:14 / km
shoes: Inov-8 OROC 280 2014

AM Warm up run on the Carter Caves warm up map at 1:10000.

Orienteering race 32:05 [5] 4.6 km (6:58 / km) +250m 5:29 / km
shoes: Inov-8 OROC 280 2014

AM Flying Pig XIX/US Middle Champs at Smokey Bridge and Shangra La at 1:10000 (ya 1:10 not 1:15). Had a pretty good race but blew it on one control.
I had a great race going until #13.
#13- I was running straight for the control but thought I was too low, I also saw a different patch of green that looked more prominent than the patch of green the control was it so I climbed to it, no control so figured I was too high, went back to where I came from, saw the pits and then was able to get the control. I should have just stayed on my compass- 1:30min.
#16- Didn't stay on my compass, saw the re-entrant and ran to it thinking it looked like a cup depression which the control was in- 20s.
#17- Chose a bad ending to my route taking the upper trail which you had to climb a bit more, had to stop close to the control and read my map because the control was suppose to be on a rock pillar but the rocks in the terrain were closer to boulder so I was a bit confused- 30s.
Avoidable mistakes- 2:20min!
Managed to finish stong technically and physically. My leg felt pretty good, a bit sore still but better than yesterday. Cool out around 8-10C. Actually ran 5.21km.

Orienteering warm up/down 15:00 [2] 2.39 km (6:17 / km) +50m 5:41 / km
shoes: Inov-8 OROC 280 2014

PM Warm down run back on the map. Went and re-ran #12-#13 to check it out, should have just stayed on my compass but the green the control was in seemed to be different than the other green areas mapped...not as thick just more dead fall. Also ran around some other areas.

Note

Good race today but still lots to improve. Lost about 4 min so not great. Would have been more happy if I didn't loose 1:30min on the second last control, I was within 10m of the boulder but didn't see the control so thought it was a bit further. Fun course and a nice (more) technical section in the end. Lets hope for a even better race tomorrow, should be pretty technical with all the cliffs and rocks. My leg felt pretty good today but not 100%, I think the running yesterday helped it get moving `after not running on it for 6 days, even though it was quite sore.

Orienteering warm up/down 22:00 [2] 3.7 km (5:57 / km) +100m 5:14 / km
shoes: Inov-8 OROC 280 2014

AM Warm up run on the Carter Caves warm up map at 1:10000.

Orienteering race 1:32:12 [5] 12.0 km (7:41 / km) +550m 6:15 / km
shoes: Inov-8 OROC 280 2014

AM Flying Pig XIX/US Long Champs at Bat Cave at 1:10000 (ya 1:10 not 1:15). Had a pretty good race but some dumb mistakes. Ended up winning which was nice!
#1- a little hesitant once I got close to the control.
#5- just missed the control and climbed to the trail and then back to the control- 30s
#8-thought I was on the wrong trail so tried to cross over to the right one, I was on the right trail so I crossed to know where, relocated quickly- 1min.
#16- looked at the right boulder and thought I saw the W side of the boulder and didn't see a control so figured I was too far left so ended up climbing too much, figured it out quickly and went back to the original boulder where the control was- 1:25min.
Avoidable mistakes- 2:55 min.
My leg felt a lot better than yesterday but not perfect. Pretty decent race for me, with not too many mistakes. Would have liked to be able to run a little faster in some parts and on some hills but know I could have if I was feeling 100%. Cool out around 4C to start? my hands were numb in the first 5 min, I had to take my compass off and blow on my hands, gradually warmed up to around 8C.

Running warm up/down 2:00 [1] 0.23 km (8:42 / km) +20m 6:04 / km
shoes: Inov-8 OROC 280 2014

AM Warm down run, leg wasn't feeling great so just decided to walk for a bit.

Note

Bad routes and slow running, leg was not good. I don't know what went wrong just couldn't see the fast routes today. No focus, might be due to the pain in my leg distracting me? Need to get back into my sprint routine. Better race tomorrow. Early season shittyness will slowly get flushed out. Amazing complex map and course, was just caught off guard. Tough season opener. It will all fall into place.

Orienteering warm up/down 12:00 [2] 2.29 km (5:14 / km) +10m 5:08 / km
shoes: Asics GEL-Speed Star 5 2014

PM Warm up run around Morehead State University with the model map. My leg felt really sore.

Orienteering race 19:52 [5] 3.4 km (5:51 / km) +90m 5:10 / km
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 190

PM Flying Pig XIX/US Sprint Champs at Morehead State University at 1:4000. Far from a good race. Was too rushed with my warm up because we arrived too late to the event. Ended up 5th, pretty good considering how many mistakes I made and how much time I lost.
#1-had trouble finding the start triangle and first control right from the start so lost a few seconds.
#2- wasn't reading the map closely enough and ran slightly off course to another control- 10s.
#11- originally saw the quickest route avoiding the trap but then looked again and saw what appeared to be a stair case and thought I could get through but found out it was impassible- 30s.
#14- ran indirectly and then around a extended wall and missed the shorter stair route-10s.
#15 took the longer choice-7s.
#17- took the longer choice- 3-5s.
#19- didn't see the control right away and had to stop and check the map and then saw the control-3-5s.
#21- started to get tired, was going fine but then saw the N line which pointed straight to #25 so started to run to #25 before realizing-30s.
#22- didn't see you could go underneath the building originally so swerved back to go underneath-5s,
#25- tried to side hill through the forest instead of dropping to the road, was slow and I fell- 7s.
Avoidable mistakes around 1:35!
Overall I had bad routes and flow combined with slow running. My leg was not good and my body felt like shit after not running for 6 days. Still had some good routes and an ok race. Nice sprint map! Cool out around 8C.

Note

Pm Warm down walk back to the parking since my leg was hurting.
