Orienteering race 1:33:31 [3] **** 5.1 km (18:20 / km) +140m 16:07 / km
shoes: VJ Falcon
Boulder Dash - 2. sunny, 60. I guess I have to call this a better day but only because I managed to find all the bags, not a good way to think about a meet but take small gifts. Once again had trouble in the same tech area, searching for 8. Rest went pretty well though with some bobbles and bad route choices. Also guess the urgency was not there though every day should count and I didn't let it.
Orienteering warm up/down 15:00 [1]

Running to start and around on trails in area.

Green Day 2 - Splits

Saturday Oct 15

Event: Boulder Dash

Road run warm up/down 25:00 [1]
shoes: VJ Falcon
Bouder Dash - 55, rain, windy. Best part of the whole weekend. Went downhill after this. Had good run along road/stretches/run back to just before start. Good warmup, perhaps too good and went out too fast? But my feeling is you can't warm up too much, esp in those conditions.
Orienteering race 2:07:58 [3] **** 4.8 km (26:40 / km) +255m 21:04 / km
spiked:11/13c shoes: VJ Falcon
Boulder Dash, Beaver Brook - Rainy and following heavy rain so streams in flood stage, all depressions had standing water.

This was perhaps my worst performance at O. First time ever that I could not find a control for a DNF. Basically was a good run except for the technical area at 3 and 4. Area had small knolls, depressions that I could not read, esp with the veg (hemlocks) hindering visibility, plus a number of rock features that I could not get to match map. Spent 15' looking for 3 (think I missed to R) before got bailed out by another looking for a different bag but knew where it was. Then spent 30' in the area of 4. bailed NW to second trail as missed the first. Was heading in when rescued by Alan Young and Linda Kohn who relocated me. Got to trail, up to spur and searched in the exact area. Think that I was focussing on the nose of the spur and bag was on the side, low and behind some hemlocks. Gave up and headed to 5 (might as well practice for Sunday as sure we'll be back here) and nailed 5. So know I was at the right location, just missed seeing it. rest went well if slow as urgency was no longer there. Almost enjoyed it exc for the thought of #4.
Note
Today's run was one way to pad the training log, unfortunate and certainly not the intended outcome.

It was suggested after that a combined O and golf event might be interesting. I'm not sure as the one time I remember playing 18 holes I had the same score as today's time;-}

Green Day 1 - Splits

Thursday Oct 13

Trail run tempo 56:33 [2] 6.0 mi (9:24 / mi)
weight:151lbs shoes: Verdict DS #1
Purple loop - 55, lt drizzle at start during warm up, started to rain bit heavier while in the woods and for run home. Nice run. Cold at first but then warmed up and didn't notice wetness. Got into good stride and had good flow going for long stretches.

Wednesday Oct 12

Note
It's cold, very wet and dreary out all day. But that would be better than this - trying to reconcile finances for 501c3 questions. Day's worth of number juggling. And the Hawk worries about an occasional run in the woods to set courses.

Tuesday Oct 11

Trail run (strides) 1:00:00 [2] 6.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
ahr:145 max:162 weight:151lbs shoes: Verdict DS #1
Purple tr - 60, grey, wet. Nice run. After warm up, stretches, butt kicks, high knees etc, did a number of speed strides - approx 30" on/30" off. Kept HR in 140 range exc during strides then would pop up into 150s and 162 on one hill section. Stopped several times but no HR skips detected.
However seems HRM may have died, or at least won't stop. Took a split after stride section for the mile or so cool down section to home. At home, the watch will not respond to any button pushing and continues to time the cool down (now 5 hrs). Even took the battery out. Screen went blank. As soon as battery reinstalled, my cool down continued!
So decision time - try to fix, maybe a new battery, or time to replace (maybe a nice fancy recording one like Spike) or maybe forget it and just take splits.

Hiking 1:00:00 [1]
weight:151lbs shoes: Salomon XA Pro
Fallss Brook Tr - 50, wet, drizzly. Easy day after long yesterday so decided to check out this trail in Tunxis SF. Woods could be interesting, lot of open area would seem, but on side off major hill (waterfall) so would be either contouring or major up/down. Also it's a hunting area. Still nice walk.
