Orienteering race 33:34 [4]*** 3.16 km (10:37 / km) +95m 9:14 / km
spiked:6/12c shoes: VJ Falcon
EMPO Short-O Ch - Good run though bobbled 1st (#2) and #3 as didn't focus on the map and went bit too fast. Then settled down for the rest.
1st M60.
woods run warm up/down (RIP) 5:00 [1]
shoes: VJ Falcon
Thacher - Took a brief cool down jog up to visit Gari. Tis a very lovely, peaceful spot. I'm quite sure he's enjoying it, esp with us revisiting and with courses going all about.
We were a bit unsure of this event but are very glad we came. It brought us both closure though the remembrances are very vivid for us and I'm sure for the good friends at EMPO. Thanks for the nice renewal.

Green X 1 (Short) - Splits

Friday Apr 28

Trail run 40:00 [1]3.0 mi (13:19 / mi)
weight:153lbs shoes: Asics DS Trnr
Short loop - 50, sunny. Warmup, stretch, high knees, butt kicks, hill. Gradually getting going but not too bad. then threw in half doz strides: 20 paces hard/30 easy. Felt pretty good.
On way back along road stopped to check out some wild onions, kind of sharp taste and not too good at end of run.

Thursday Apr 27

Cycling (Road) 40:00 [1]
weight:153lbs
Flat spin around W Simsbury loop. L knee stiffened up yesterday after the run so trying it out. It wasn't quite happy and complained a couple times, esp towards decision point of hills or not. So not, and headed home for coffee on the sunny back porch;-}

Wednesday Apr 26

Trail run intervals 59:00 [4]6.0 mi (9:50 / mi)
weight:152lbs shoes: NB 833
Purple loop - 50, clear, chilly in shorts/t-shirt at first. After warmup/stretching, did 2 sets of 4x 2' hard/2' rcy. Except only 3 in second set; figured it was a good effort and not push before weekend. Good effort - first was hard to get going but rest got into good flow.
Technique 5:00 [1]
Spent about half hour plus plotting out Saturday's Green and Brown courses at Thacher. Got it figured. Should be fun - just don't fall in a crack and avoid certain stream crossings. Will look at Sunday's course again later.

Strength 30:00 [1]
Turned over 2 more rows of garden to let the rye settle in. Lettuce in first row is doing well. Bought some cabbage, broccoli and parsley plants at the 10% discount day at the nursery. Will put them in tomorrow. Ahhhh! Fresh veggies coming soon.

Orienteering (Control pickup/mapping) 2:00:00 [1]***
spiked:6/8c weight:152lbs shoes: VJ Pro 1
5 Ponds - 65, sunny, lovely day. What a great spot for an O course! How upsetting to be out in these great woods enjoying it so much after all the rain Sunday. Still some extra water about although the lake that developed under the tarp has gone - looks like a nice spot to set up. Where'd the lake come from?

Picked up controls on the east side while Lyn got the W. Took some pencils along and made a few additions (new trail near 17), corrections (knoll at 13 - moved and changed contour, thanks Peter)(main road just W of 16 - fixed curves) and modified some of the veg (added some in region of 16, took some other green off). Map generally plays pretty well.
Note
5 Ponds Red - Added splits from a test run done on 3/18 using the streamers. Took some extreme routes for test purposes and checking map, so not totally good comparison. Note that there was no eveidence of the new trail near 17.

Sunday Apr 23

Event: WCOC Five Ponds meet

Orienteering (Control hanging) 34:34 [1]***
weight:152lbs shoes: Soloman XA Blue/Yellow
5 Ponds - 45, rain. Hanging controls on White/Yellow courses early and hustling back to try to get things protected a bit from the rain. Lyn and Jim had it under control. Thankfully we brought a tarp as the rain went up a couple notches to heavy plus during the day and we were standing in a lake by the end - probably 1"+ during this period with more before and after.

Good turn out for the crappy conditions and all seemed to enjoy the Red. With no beginners showing up, can reuse next time. That was nice as we didn't have to worry about novices getting lost in cold rain.

Thanks Peter for picking up the beginner controls. We'll get the rest in more moderate conditions - hopefully.
C • Fine course 4
Note
The evening weather indicated today's downpour was centered over the Bridgeport to Litchfield area with 6 to 8 " of precipitation today! not including what fell yesterday. I tend to agree. It was rather wet out there.
