Event: Forest Park Sprints

Trail run warm up/down 10:00 [1]
ahr:135 weight:151lbs shoes: VJ Falcon
Forest Park - 80, humid. Jogging around trying to loosen up, warmup, get knees going and loosen L calf - very tight.
Orienteering race 38:37 [4]*** 3.05 km (12:40 / km) +105m 10:48 / km
ahr:154 max:173 spiked:8/11c shoes: VJ Falcon
Forest Park, Phil's non-sprint Sprint - 80, humid. Bit longer and more vertical than expected. Still good run but bobbled 6 rather badly and total boom on 10. Close to 10' errors plus running pretty slowly.
Orienteering race 45:02 [4]*** 3.47 km (12:59 / km) +115m 11:08 / km
ahr:147 max:171 spiked:12/13c shoes: VJ Falcon
Non-sprint 2 - Started off with bad boom on 1, think I went right by and missed it, wandering about on the trail to NE before figuring location. Rest went ok just slow.

Sprint 1 - Splits

Sprint 2 - Splits

Thursday May 25

Trail run long 1:40:00 [1]**
weight:149lbs shoes: Soloman XA Blue/Yellow
Nepaug SF - 65, sunny, perfect day - no FDFs yet! Used Biderag 1:20,000 map of Jan '04 following mb trails from 202 Tunxis TH along W side eventually getting to overlook. The bikers have added more trails and some really sick constructions: lots of big cliff drops of 10-15', and, to make it more exciting, take off ramps, ramps at the bottom of the cliff drops to jump up onto other ramps and for good measure a long ramp (6" wide) leading to a 20' drop - half way out the ramp is a 5' teeter board for more fun. Think I changed sports at about the right time.

Lots of trails and woods roads in here to get totally lost on but the maps was good enough. Woods vary from reasonably open to thick mt laurel and scrub. We ran into some DEP Forestry guys in the process of marking trees for an upcoming tree sale (cutting) - two 70 acre sections.

Overall a nice, easy run. This is to be a rest week to try to start a knee recovery. Today was longer than planned but too nice to skip and knees were much better than yesterday. Area could make a nice map or two.

Wednesday May 24

Trail run 1:06:00 [1]6.0 mi (10:59 / mi)
ahr:136 max:161 weight:150lbs shoes: NB1060
Purple loop - 65, sunny, clear & dry finally. Easy rcy run but knees barely cooperated. Really sore to start for first 14' jog and stretch. Then better but still felt every step. Have taken several Vit I since and are better now (early evening). Was a nice day for a run it beautiful woods and a shame not to be able to enjoy it.

Got new shoes to see if that might be part of the problem. These are supposed to have more cushion and seem to have much thicker forefoot. Tend to run landing on fore/flat.

Monday May 22

Hiking 5:00 [1]
ahr:100 max:121 weight:151lbs shoes: Salomon XA Pro
Mowing grass - 65, sunny, grass very long. Just over an hour and not hard but trying to calibrate from weekend effort. Quite weary from long weekend.

Trail run warm up/down 15:00 [1]
shoes: VJ Falcon
Hawn SP - 60. Jogging around before start, stretching. Trying to get going but quite tired. HR jumped immediately into 130s and even to 165 with little urging during warm up. Settled around 140 during a jog along road but just seemed high with no effort. Not a good sign.
Orienteering race 2:07:09 [3]*** 9.23 km (13:47 / km) +210m 12:22 / km
ahr:145 max:168 spiked:10/15c shoes: VJ Falcon
Team Trials Red - Hawn SP, MO - 60, wet from early a.m. rain with some sprinkles during run. Not a good day. Lot waist high veg, scrub oak etc, made for slow and tiring run and low vis.

Seemed unfocussed from start and ran into same kid on first real O control (he started 2' ahead) quite lost and he hung with me thru some of my search for 6. Think he found it and went on when I was off searching elsewhere. Never saw him again; he DNFed. Anyway my lack of good focus and the slight distraction of another parallel runner threw me off those early controls. Settled down and hit the rest but very slowly. Wound up 5th M45, well back, but 6th on old men Red. Would have won M35 both days. Hmmm - change class next time?

More on HR: Started ok and rose into AHR of mid 150s during first 5 controls, with peak of 168 at 6. Then dropped to 140s for 6-8 and to mid 130s rest of course, peaking in low 150s thru 12 and only in 140s for 13-15. Lost signal at end. Not sure what that means but really had little umph today and focus was off all day.

Overall - nice course - fun running longer course with very distinctly different route choice and nav problems. Tho had energy problem, still glad I did the Red.

Nice weekend by SLOC. Thanks.

Red - Splits
