Trail run warm up/down 15:00 [1]
shoes: VJ Falcon
Normal warm up for Night-O and checking out visibility with Zipka light.
Orienteering race 1:11:16 [4]*** 5.1 km (13:58 / km)
spiked:8/10c shoes: VJ Falcon
Night-O Champs @ Lights of Cheyenne - 60, clear, windy, no moon but could see glare from Cheyenne.
Was surprised by thick juniper, 2-3' high, on way to #1. Ran with new reinforced knee socks and shorts and never felt the juniper - great combination. Bobbled 1 by trying to go straight along slope to control, not really seeing green on map or realizing it represented the juniper. At about the expected distance and not seeing anything appropriate, headed up to open to come out even with two trees which matched 2 white blobs in the yellow map. Turned and nailed the bag. Ran the rest carefully along obvious handrails and attackpoints.

Used Zipka light on hand which gave great light perception for running, a bit bright for map reading but only good for seeing controls from about 50m. Still much more pleasant than some vivid headlights used by some.

Saw a shooting star crossing the open on way to 7.

1st M60 but think was fairly well back on Green.

Green Night-O - Splits

Sunday Aug 13

Trail run warm up/down 15:00 [1]
shoes: VJ Falcon
Jogging/stretching/strides
Orienteering race 1:04:33 [4]*** 5.5 km (11:44 / km) +200m 9:56 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: VJ Falcon
Western States Ch Day 2 @ Superfly Marsh - 80, sun, no wind, nice
Good run until - Boom leaving 5. Didn't prepare exit direction and followed Reds out with my compass on 4 to road. Stopped to check target control and realized error but couldn't get on track going to 6 with several false attempts. Should have stayed on road and attacked.
7 - Very careful now but went down wrong reentrant, too soon and checked wrong cliffs. Too fast in tech terrain.

2nd M60 today and for combined behind an Irish guy.

Green Day 2 - Splits

Saturday Aug 12

Orienteering race 1:01:17 [4]***
weight:149.5lbs shoes: VJ Falcon
Western Champs Day 1 - E. Twin Bldr map. 50, windy, sprinks. Good run except slowish route thru sage to 1 and bad overshoot on 2, misreading reentrants. Long sage route to 8 wasn't fun. Straight might have been better.

Still 1st M60 by a bit but quite far back from a nice run by Charlie Shab... at 46 and quite a few around 53-55.

Green 1 - Splits

Friday Aug 11

Orienteering race 25:40 [4]*** 2.52 km (10:11 / km)
spiked:8/10c shoes: VJ Falcon
Prolog @Idonwannabe - 80, sunny. Ok run but bobbles and not good map reading esp to 5 - too L at last stretch not checking off rocks, and 10 - way off to L and climbed thru all sorts of huge boulders. Got blisters on tops of both little toes - perhaps from using different socks as inner pair - smart wool shorties. Put Neosporin on and changed shoes for Chase.
Orienteering race 1:20:46 [4]*** 6.57 km (12:18 / km)
spiked:10/14c shoes: DS Trainer X
Chase @ pelican Bay - 80, v sunny, hot tho with clouds for some. major ugly brain fart going to 10. Should have gone R along open but decided to go straight in shade thru rocks and sage. Hard going and then lost position just short. Tried to relocate off aspen and kept going in wanders. Eventually saw Stepping Stone and walked to where was sure of position. Ok rest of way. Had also bobbled 3 and 4.

Thursday Aug 10

Orienteering race 1:04:13 [4]*** 5.6 km (11:28 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon
Stampede @ Plutonic Pleasures - Gasping from altitude. Shaky for first 2 loops with mass of people, then settled down on longer loop. Good run but struggled going up.

Wednesday Aug 9

Event: Rocky Mountain 1000 Day

Orienteering race 26:40 [5]*** 3 km (8:53 / km)
spiked:11/11c shoes: VJ Falcon
Sprint @ Diamond Bay - 80, sunny, hot, late afternoon. Fun first day sprint. Nav ok, just trying to run slow and read map. Alitude caught up at about 8 and walked gasped up hills.

Tuesday Aug 8

Hiking 2:00:00 [1]
shoes: DS Trainer X
Hike with Lucy & Jeremy from their house up trail toward Homestake Mine. Got as far as nice open view of mts and dark clouds and decided to head back. Clouds passed but was enough gasping at altitude for first day at 11,000'.
