| Orienteering warm up/down 20:00 [1] | ||
| shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| Preparing for Day 2 - warm up jog, stretch, strides.
Then getting ready to start, cleared the watch of splits - from Saturday! Was automatic and not thinking, kind of my state that morning. Because I didn't get a map back from Saturday, didn't record splits and no record - gone! Realized it while climbing from 7 to 8 (slowly after all the time spent seeking 6).

| US Champs @ BV - Day 2 - 80, sunny hot. Awful run. Very technical terrain, different from Day 1 and the Model and didn't adjust. Lost big time on 2 and worse of 6. Actually found 3 before 2 but didn't realize was mine and kept searching - that kind of day. Relocated on road NW of control - lost 9'. On 6, was on course about 80% of way but misread position and aimed SE between 6 and 7. Circled around until Peter Goodwin advised he was coming from 7, taking pity on a poor forelorn being. Headed off in the direction he was heading from but didn't find 7 but did relocate on a control W of 6 that had passed 20' earlier and then in for 16' error. Rest went fine. Even had the pleasure of running with Lyn, well trying to keep up with Lyn, on way to 11.
So need to work on reading specific detail on the go. That's been a problem - here, the Chase leg 10, last fall at UNO. Added - Looking at results and splits, seems I got 5th in M60. But need to add lost time at more controls and figure probably lost about 38' compared to normal running mates. That would have been close to John Harbuck for the day but not enough to overcome the bad run (-7' or so) Saturday.
Green L Day 2 - Splits | ||
Saturday Aug 19 | ||
| Event: US Classic Champs | ||
| Orienteering warm up/down 25:00 [1] | ||
| shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| Before Day 1 event - 70, overcast. Jog, stretch, strides, run about including back to car for Day 1 Punch Card inst of 2 that had grabbed, with plenty of time - who me tired? start of not so good w.e. | ||
| Orienteering race 1:04:00 [4]*** 5.54 km (11:33 / km) +310m 9:02 / km | ||
| spiked:8/12c shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| Day 1 of US Champs @ Buena Vista - Long Green - 70, overcast until end. Generally good run on fast open terrain except being at 9000', I wasn't very fast.
Bobbled #2 heading off hill top on wrong bearing down wrong spur to Red? control on depression. Quick run 120m L to bag. (+1') Major boom at 7 when up reentrant too soon and on to a brg to rock cluster parallel to mine. Milled around others including Val Meyer and wandered NW to similar cluster. Finally realized several people had come from behind cluster and went down in. (+6') 10 - went low and wound up at cluster 100m S of bag. (+1) No splits as didn't record times as normal on back of map as never got map back. Then erased splits at start of Day 2. 4th M60 about 6' behind cluster of 3 w/i <1'. Well down Green results however.
Friday Aug 18 | ||
| Orienteering 1:00:00 [1]*** | ||
| shoes: DS Trainer X | ||
| BV Model Event - Checked out the area, the mapping, terrain, rock features and veg. Appeared that it will be hilly and rocky and detailed for Day 1 and open and fast and not as technical for Day 2. Boy was I wrong.
Found the rock features reasonably representative but the veg was confusing during this walk-around and more so on Day 2. Day 2 was totally unexpected! as results show. Still had a nice walk-about and finished just as the first sprinks started.
Thursday Aug 17 | ||
| Orienteering warm up/down 20:00 [1] | ||
| shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| Normal routine of jog/stretch/strides to loosen up the old tired body. | ||
| Orienteering race 49:11 [4]*** 5.01 km (9:49 / km) | ||
| spiked:13/14c shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| 1000 Day A Meet Day 3 @ First with the Most - 75, sunny, good run, clean. Same area as Team Trial Middle in '04 with similar course. Only helped by being familiar with area of 5, 8-9. Rest depended on reading detail and running it. Which was able to do pretty cleanly.
1st M60, 3rd Green. | ||
Green Day 3 - Splits | ||
Tuesday Aug 15 | ||
| Trail run warm up/down 15:00 [1] | ||
| weight:148.5lbs shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| Loosening up for sprint. Short jog plus stretching. Hot so not much. | ||
| Orienteering race 35:16 [4]**** 2.9 km (12:10 / km) | ||
| shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| Team Sprint at 1000 Day - 85. sunny, quite warm. Ok at first but boomed 6 going too L into quite similar features. Relocated quickly and straight in but lost about 3'. Then overshot 8 after taking a too low route for another minute lost.
Nice course for a challenge. Followed by a fun Team Adventure. Very tired now, heading back for a nap.
Monday Aug 14 | ||
| Trail run warm up/down 15:00 [1] | ||
| shoes: VJ Falcon | ||
| Normal warm up for Night-O and checking out visibility with Zipka light. | ||

| Night-O Champs @ Lights of Cheyenne - 60, clear, windy, no moon but could see glare from Cheyenne.
Was surprised by thick juniper, 2-3' high, on way to #1. Ran with new reinforced knee socks and shorts and never felt the juniper - great combination. Bobbled 1 by trying to go straight along slope to control, not really seeing green on map or realizing it represented the juniper. At about the expected distance and not seeing anything appropriate, headed up to open to come out even with two trees which matched 2 white blobs in the yellow map. Turned and nailed the bag. Ran the rest carefully along obvious handrails and attackpoints. Used Zipka light on hand which gave great light perception for running, a bit bright for map reading but only good for seeing controls from about 50m. Still much more pleasant than some vivid headlights used by some. Saw a shooting star crossing the open on way to 7. 1st M60 but think was fairly well back on Green.
