Sunday Aug 27

Event: WCOC Sessions Woods

Trail run warm up/down 5:00 [1]
weight:148lbs shoes: VJ Integrator
Sessions - Too cold and wet for much warm up. Figured would go easy to start and build.
Orienteering race 1:29:35 [4]*** 6.8 km (13:10 / km) +220m 11:20 / km
spiked:14/16c shoes: VJ Integrator
Sessions Woods - Red set by Peter Grollmann - 60, steady rain from 10:00 on. Was supposed to hold off until afternoon. Shows what they know. Still was fine for running except L glass lens fogged towards end. My Cat Crap seems to have melted during the hot CO days and may need to be replaced. Full leaf out, ferns and blueberries but still good running and pretty open.

Fun course with good route choice problems, nice mix of long trail runs followed by detailed nav, more trail and then fast open woods to finish.

Red - Splits

Saturday Aug 26

Trail run 45:00 [1]3.0 mi (14:59 / mi)
weight:147lbs shoes: NB1060
Short loop - 65, humid, glasses fogged up again. 2 days in a row forgot to crap them. Got used to the dry out west.
Knees complaining a bit so cut it short for tomorrow. Did some speed strides instead: 15 paces hard/20 easy.

Friday Aug 25

Trail run 1:02:00 [1]6.0 mi (10:19 / mi)
weight:146lbs shoes: DS Trainer X
Purple loop - 70, sprinks at start gradually getting heavy by the time we finished. As most of run is in nice eastern forest, we could hear it get heavier but little made it through to the ground. Then we got good and wet on the road run back home.

Nice run, sluggsih at first gradually getting better. Esp about midway when Lyn suddenly caught right up. Didn't realize I was slowing down, but she had decided to try to do some knee lifting strides to shake out of the plod. It worked and we had a nice run rest of way.

Thursday Aug 24

Cycling (Road) 1:00:00 [1]
weight:145lbs
W Simsbury loop incl Firetown Hills - 70, clear, nice morning. Haven't ridden in a while and took a bit to get going. Nice ride.
Strength 30:00 [1]
Splitting wood, some easy but some very ornery.

Wednesday Aug 23

Trail run 1:02:00 [2]6.0 mi (10:19 / mi)
weight:147lbs shoes: NB1060
Purple loop - 80, humid start but seemed to dry towards end. Weary start, hard getting going but got into a good flow after stretching. Then nice easy flow up hills and through trails. Felt great. The altitude effect remains.

Interesting how stories of Mt lion yesterday made awareness of surroundings higher on agenda during run. And awareness was up into trees as well as surrounding terrain. Good practice for O. Hope it never actually is needed for real.

Time doesn't include about 5' chatting with ranger as he was rebuilding bridge.

Note
weight:148lbs (rest day)
Back from 1000 Day - Lovely New England weather. Spent the day catching up with the garden, harvesting tomatoes (yum), squash, shard (Swiss;-), for a very nice fresh veggie dinner.

Sitings: Came around from the back around the garage to see a coyote stop in its track, turn around and trot across the street and up the neighbors drive into the woods. Neat.

But the best is the neighbor who stopped by to advise she had seen a Mountain Lion cross the road, about a mile away. She stopped. It stopped. And they stared at each other. She reported it to the animal control officer who said there had been a half dozen sitings on our street in the last week. Really neat. BUT the CT DEP says there are NO mt lions in CT. Mainly because it is endangered and would need extra conservation area designations or something tlike that.

Note
Travel day back from Colo. Spent the flight from DEN to CHI looking over WOC long course maps. The Team gave us a very nice set of WOC newsletters and maps and spent the time trying to figure out potential routes and being amazed how Swisscheese and the rest can determine routes while running at full speed. The package will provide much enjoyment and study for quite a while. Much better having paper copies than trying to follow routes on the web. Thanks to the Team for thinking of us.
C • Thanks to both of you and WCOC... 1
Note
Being back from the 1000 Day and having time to reflect on the fine time in WY and CO with excellent maps, courses and time chatting with old friends, things are nowhere as bleak as they seemed during the abyssmal run on Sunday. So time for a bit of reflection - Considering the 1000 Day, managed to win the Night-O Champ plus two A-meet days and finish second on another but then wound up the week with a so-so run on Day 1 of the Champs and a disaster on Day 2.

Considering 2006 Champs, results are thus two Golds, one silver, and one disaster. Guess the disaster must be attributed to not adjusting to the very different map and terrain at BV and probably just as important the wrong rehydration fluid to prepare for the runs. Must be more careful.

Meanwhile Lyn has a 2006 record of 1 Gold and 3 Silvers.

We're doing something kind of right but must continue the work and be much more careful.

Plan now to have an easy week to recover and then build toward the NAs. Great stuff this - if you believe, anything can happen.
