Event: UNO Camping Weekend

Orienteering race 1:45:04 [4]*** 6 km (17:31 / km)
spiked:10/15c shoes: VJ Integrator
Pawtuckaway Day 1 - 75, sunny. Careful run, kept good track of location, planned routes - up to 10 then sketchy but survived ok. Then major BOOM going to 11, not remembering the lessons from Friday, and got lost badly in vague terrain with thick pine sappling growth. Ok after.
Orienteering (SAR) 30:00 [1]***

Pawtuckaway - After mooching about for an hour or so, and just about heading to the beach, plans sabatouged by cries of people dying in the woods. So out in the second wave looking for a guy with bee stings somewhere in the area possibly between Red 9 and 11 but very uncertain. Anyway had a good run following Pia through the woods, trying to keep up while maintaining map contact. Was actually a delight, she is very smooth moving thru the woods. Reminded me of the days following Gari back in the days - same smooth style.

Red Day 1 - Splits

Beaver Brook, NH - 75, sunny. As threatened, we stopped here on the way to Pawtuckaway to seek some kind of redemption for the awful experience in the deluge last year, the only time I have DNFed at O for not finding a control. Started at the Maple Hill parking area and worked towards the nasty area across the brook, first taking a more sensible route to my first control, Day 1, of going pretty straight along the stone wall and dropping to it.

Then crossed over and took turns looking for our problem controls. For me - Day 1 #3, 16.20' last year found after assist from Gail, and #4 - 39.14' when I gave up and continued on after relocating (with help from Linda Kohn) on the trails beyond and establishing my position almost directly in the middle of the circle. Came back to the same place and realized that is the NE end of the hill, not the N!. The control was tucked about 10' from where I was standing, hidden in amongst pine branches - UGH!

Then checked out a couple of Lyn's controls in the area and finally my Day 2 #8 (from Day 1 #5 direction). Checked out some other areas but that was the main effort.

Main lesson - This area is very detailed, with poor visibility, subtle complex terrain. To maintain location, had to slow down to a walk and carefully read the map checking off features as we moved along. Very important to switch gears from running hard on approach, to recognize the change and slow down.

Then we got stuck in a massive traffic jam getting around Manchester - took almost an hour to get around on 101.

Cycling (Road) 45:00 [2]

W Simsbury loop w/o hills - 65, sunny, dry. Nice day but feeling yesterday's run, harder than we thought. Good stuff. So nice spin and then back for coffee in the sun with the rest of the papers.
Note
Plan for the weekend is to head north tomorrow to hit Beaver Brook about mid-day to try to make sense of the map. Plan to spend the time walking through the terrain with perhaps some easy jogging. After a couple hours, or until we get totally frustrated, will head on to Pawtuckaway for more adventure in the wilds of NH.

Trail run tempo 57:00 [4]6.0 mi (9:29 / mi)
weight:147lbs shoes: DS Trainer X
Purple loop - 70, sunny. Late afternoon after Finnish visitor begged off due illness cancelling training run at Tarrywile and long drive. Nice peppy run. Felt good and after stretching worked on stride form esp quick-snap push off so that can feel bit of skid.

Tuesday Sep 5

Trail run 55:00 [1]
weight:148lbs shoes: NB1060
JB Williams Park, Glastonbury - 65, grey, humid. Running trails around park checking out place. Small park but lots of trails all over the place, couple good hills for small size - one used to be a ski slope, all be it small, plus a nice pavilion, playground and pond. Local xc team practices here and holds their meets on the trails. Woods are mostly open but interesting for our area - didn't see any rock features, cliffs or boulders. Would have to use reentrants, spurs and trails for features.

Note
(rest day)
Take it easy day sitting out on back porch drinking coffee, watching the garden grow. Lower L back sore from nosedive fall at Huntington that wrenched. Achy so let it rest today. Last week fell three times at Sessions yielding sore R tricep, now recovered. Takes a while.

Sunday Sep 3

Trail run 58:00 [1]
weight:148lbs shoes: Soloman XA Blue/Yellow
Wilcox Park up to T'ville on Blue Tr, back on W road by water tank - 62, misty wet is the best Ernesto could do after raining all night. So was nice run though we were both very groggy after too much rehydration fluid last night;-/

Coated glasses yesterday with Fogtech which worked well though getting well dripped on during run. No fogging but glasses seemed to build up a fine sand-like texture and were bit blurry at times. Still better than fog. Used on O glasses yesterday in very humid conditions with good results. Packet seems to have dried out so may be only one time use thing.
