Trail run long 1:18:00 [2]
weight:148lbs shoes: Salomon XA 2
Horse Trail-St Zotique - 30, grey sun, few sluffies. Snow remains mainly firm but collapses just slightly in a few spots, more so towards end as suppose warmth was getting to it. Trail from Main Gate to first junction covered with loose snow from all the foot traffic making hard going - like running on the beach. Mostly firm enough for a good run. Just weary enough that a good run wasn't on today and this was almost a slog. So made periodic stops to recoop, enjoy the woods, look for birds (not many around - a titmouse, 2 chickadees and 2 crows).

One stop was to chat with an older man that we haven't seen for quite a while. Used to see him in the mornings walking the trails. Always looked quite officious in a woodsman sort of way. Today he was dressed in heavy wool - pants, shirt, vest, hat. On a previous chat we think he mentioned he worked for one of the agencies checking for poachers and was coming back from more remote parts of the refuge. Today he said he'd been assigned to other, widely dispersed areas. Lyn thought he mentioned Hawaii, but I missed that. Good to see him again, very pleasant.
Note
End of Hardest week. Way over week goal but that was mostly due to the shovelling episode. Also didn't get the details right, but the goal is a nonbinding resolution anyway so I'll do what I want despite what it says!

Road run warm up/down 35:00 [1]
weight:148lbs shoes: DS Trainer X
15' before checking out road conditions. Decided it was too slippery and changed shoes for the run. Kind of a brisk W wind.
20' after with Phil around the upper field and then across it to demonstrate the solidity of the snow cover. We didn't sink in at all though it gave slightly a couple times. I'm all too aware of the conditions after trying to clear the drive.
Road run race 23:07 [4] 3.2 mi (7:12 / mi) vdot: 43.6
shoes: Attack II
Snowstorm 5k - 30, sunny, some slippery spots but the areas I worried about on the downhill had melted by the time we got to them. Had felt sprightly during the warmup and then to start. After a mile or so started to fade, not change pace, just no faster gear. With Lyn thru 1, then coming out of the parking lot she took off and got 50 ft ahead, gradually getting further away in the last mile to finish at 22.45. Not her best of the year. She was hoping to beat that by 3" to take 3rd place on the World Record list.
Note
Back has recovered from the shovelling but the forearms, esp L, are still quite sore. Can't grab anything with the L hand.

Skiing (xc) 1:20:00 [1]
weight:148lbs shoes: Fischer Hobacks
Mcleans trails from Main Entrance - 20, sunny, windy but ok in woods, snow quite bullet proof. Barely make any impression but enough to kind of stay on course and not slip too much. Still avoided the steeper stuff. Looked for birds for the Great Backyard Bird Count. Saw 3 chickadees. Disappointing but not unexpected. Saw more at home but the wind seems to have them hunkered down.
Note
After sending the article link to our son, he responded with this link: http://www.arrs.net/VetRec.htm plus the comment that this was pretty incredible stuff! Maybe they are just missing a lot of races?

Strength (Shovelling) 30:00 [1]
weight:147lbs
More - Clearing off the end of the drive after the plow went by and by and by. It was insult to injury - they went by 3 times this morning. Got it right to the curb filling the end of the drive with heavy lumps. Struggled as back is tender and also L forearm quite sore from the lifting yesterday. Difficult to grip. Maybe should try pull ups - naw, what an awful thought.

Skiing (xc) 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: Fischer Hobacks
Around the fields - 18, severe clear, strong NW winds. Not sure how much snow as was so dense it was difficult to penetrate. That made for interesting skiing as tended to slip sideways, but was able to find some loosish snow along the edges. The wind had scoured the fields of loose snow but the snow was consolidated enough that the fields were well covered. Didn't go up onto the trails as the downs looked nasty with the hard snow.
AOWN: only heard a couple of birds, nothing to be seen. All well hunkered down out of the wind.
Note
FWIW - An interesting article. Lyn thinks he got carried away a bit.

Wednesday Feb 14

Strength (Shovelling) 3:00:00 [1]
weight:145lbs
Funny snow. Very unusual. Fine, icy like particles almost like sugar but it consolidated into a very heavy dense layer. It was only 3-4" but kind of solid. So had to be broken into chunks to clear. Even better, the poor little snowblower seized up after about 15'. The automatic snowblower was busy inside making cookies and tomfusses, much more important than shovelling. Overall the back is very sore. Can tell this is the first snow of the winter and very not ready.

Orienteering long 3:25:00 [2] *** 10.1 mi (20:18 / mi) +550m 10:47 / km
spiked:16/21c weight:147lbs shoes: VJ Pro 1
Mt Tom Billygoat 2004 (in reverse, all controls) - 18, grey sun, mostly bare ground with some thin patches of snow (tomorrow is supposed to be quite different), water features frozen quite thoroughly making for good route choices. Map is the Nov version as haven't scanned this map yet nor opened the topo - later.

Nice run. Able to keep going, running most of the hills right up to the finish. Able to read and keep track of position, checking off the mapped cliffs (If the G represents weight, does the P represent cliff height on this map?). Bobbled a few controls: 17 - wrong marsh, no water or Bermans at 11 so stopped and had a Shot in their honor, ran golf-O taking low route to 10 while dodging the logging in the area, then boomed 3 going L to wrong knoll, stopped a reentrant short to 2 and went R to Start.

Managed to clip R shin on short little stump leaving 18 as Lyn was approaching. She's always distracting me! Also managed to clip the other shin and knee during the run while getting into mt laurel and other stuff.
Another fun day in the woods. Guess tomorrow will be shovel time and then maybe some skiing;-}

Cold. Took quite a while to warm up hands and feet as had only just nudged the thermometer up a bit and had sat around reading too much AP getting cold.
