| Skiing long (xc) 2:00:00 [2] | ||
| weight:145lbs shoes: Fischer Hobacks | ||
| Mcleans Main Entrance - 30 rising to warm, sunny, bit windy in the open. Wet snow from Sat, set up solid. Couldn't penetrate it standing on skis and the glaze top layer meant little sidewise control, just slide. Fortunately the track from Sat was still intact. In fact the track was as fine as I remember it ever being - no foot prints, snowshoes, nothing. A parallel snowshoe track wandered along for quite a ways.
Headed out the main trail to 2nd junc, up past the summit hill and out to the steep part at the base of the summit. Then headed back. At junction we decided to give the Horse trail a try. So on over the bridge, up a couple hills. This became a kind of disappointing decision after the fine beginning to the morning as this trail is a narrow single track with less room for alternative winter transport means. The first half was ok with a single set of footprints down the track with snoshoe tracks along side. Then we ran into a couple, he on skis and she on snowshoes. Guess they had just turned around and were heading back in the direction we were going because as soon as we passed, the lovely ski trail disappear in a fluff of snowshoe mush. We passed several more snowshoers as we went, all traipsing up the trail. Suppose they will all compete the loop and mush the rest of the ski trail. Still it lasted longer than expected and was certainly a super fine day.
Saturday Mar 17 | ||
| Skiing long (xc) 2:00:00 [2] | ||
| weight:148lbs shoes: Fischer Hobacks | ||
| Mcleans - 35, grey w sun trying to show late. Got maybe 12" of nice snow during all day storm Friday, finishing with another 2" of sleet during the evening and maybe some rain. Blew drive of the snow last night (with our new "old" blower) so would be ready to get off this morning. Woke to the dense layer of new cover, so blew a path to drive out to ski and did the rest after.
Tried Picnic grd but only one set of ski tracks that quickly turned around, plus several snowshoe tracks. Tried around the first field but breaking trail was hard with the sleet layer - almost enough to support weight but not always for Lyn and not at all for me. So headed over to Main Entr. Nice track set on main trail up to Summit. We turned around at base of Summit Tr and went back down ski hill. Snow slow so was ok. Then out to Spring Pond and finally good run back. Nice track all the way with not many people yet though passed quite a few skiers on way back. Plus will undoubtedly get the walkers out before the next outing (if it lasts). Fun effort and a bonus after the 60s last week. Take it when we can.

| Weary so this felt good, stretching out the poor old muscles. Plus it's raining with threat of snow for tomorrow. | ||
Wednesday Mar 14 | ||
| Road run warm up/down 16:00 [1] | ||
| ahr:128 max:174 weight:146lbs shoes: DS Trainer X | ||
| Penwood from pkg to HQ area - 60s, sunny, no snow at all in woods, bit remains on one section of road. | ||
| Road run hills 54:00 [4] | ||
| ahr:162 max:184 shoes: DS Trainer X | ||
| Penwood East side road - Started at junction by picnic area. 5x 4:30' up/ rcy back down till HR<130 (betw 5 & 7'). 1,4,5 were S back towards pkg area. Gradual climb and got about 950m and looks like about 80' climb but topo is indistinct. Was up though. #2 and 3 went N up past Lake Louise and a bit towards the site of the old Veeder cabin. Steeper climb and est 730m and 190' climb.
Hard effort but didn't feel all that bad. Nice being out in mild weather with throngs of bird activity about, lots of squirrels (escaped from Laramie?) and even some chipmonks (esc from our place?).
Tuesday Mar 13 | ||
| Road run warm up/down 32:00 [1] | ||
| weight:146lbs shoes: Attack II | ||
| 20' jog out + stretching / 12' jog back
AOWN: We seem to have resident hawks, at least two but there seems to be constant kreeing most of the day. As I started out this morning one glided down the street, landed in a tree next door to check the area and then went right overhead with a little animal in its claws disappearing across the street in the pines.
| woods run intervals 35:00 [4] | ||
| shoes: Attack II | ||
| Mcleans esker, woods and Beaver Woods - 50, sunny, some open woods but mostly snow pack and still quite firm.
5 x 1' / 30" rcy 3 sets with 5' in between. Running through the woods picking way through/over/under slash /around little pines. Some nice woods, mostly thick. AOWN: In addition to the hawks, tonight just at sunset a flock of turkey vultures circled overhead and then settled into pine tree tops next door. Must have been at least 6 or 7. Pretty things hovering over and then dropping into the thin upper reaches.
Monday Mar 12 | ||
| Trail run warm up/down 10:00 [1] *** | ||
| weight:147lbs shoes: Jalas | ||
| Mashamoquet - 50, sunny. Jogging to start of 4/9/06 Green Day 2 up very icy trail after trying to cross the ice over the stream. Broke thru and went around on the brdge. | ||
| Orienteering (Rerun) 1:12:30 [4] *** 7.8 km (9:18 / km) +1m 9:17 / km | ||
| spiked:11/14c | ||
| Mashamoquet Green from 4/9/06 - Snow mostly melted but ground still very frozen so lots of standing water. Trails mix of mud or ice, some very icy. Steep slopes top layer gone but frozen under so gives way easily as I found out going down towards 11 (which I failed to recognize as needing punching because of my dibber and no punch traces on the pin punch card) and coming down to 14 - skidded out twice.
Reasonably good run though about 10' slower than event. Lost a bunch at 5 - found a good route thru the green but then struggled trying to identify the feature, lost about 5'. Also left 9 way too R and hit trail beyond 10. Ran on to check wall and discovered predicament. By this time the shoes had developed a blister on the R heel like they always do - the reason I seldom wear them. (Anyone want barely used Jalas size 10?) AOWN - As I approached 6, I could see a large dog-type creature slinking away into the mt laurel, very unobtrusively. Almost looked like a German Shepherd, but could more likely be a coyote. Pretty animal. Let me punch in peace and I kept going. Fun day. Nice to be out in mild conditions.
