Event: Five Ponds Local

Orienteering long 1:28:00 [2] *** 6.56 km (13:25 / km) +90m 12:33 / km
spiked:10/11c weight:146lbs shoes: VJ Integrator
5 Ponds - Control Pickup - 38, rain, sleet, bit of snow on grd, lots of water in those types of features. Early part of Nor'easter, seems to have been enough to scare everyone off! exc Rick who came along late to pickup controls. As it was, the lack of the normal hoards by 10:30 led us to pickup early. Lyn got the Greens, I got the Reds, and Peter Grollmann got the rest.

Nice courses by Peter. G/R did the same first 10 controls and the Red went off into the nice section to the SE using a 1:15 map. Did the course backwards sort of in a score-o sort of way. Haven't been on a 1:15 course for a while and adjusted quickly. Map works quite well, though some of the green has grown out and some hunter trails have been added. Ran in UA which worked fine exc tended to cool off and hands got wet and cold untying the controls and throwing them in a bag.

Fun day in the cold rain/sleet/snow. Ooo! forgot the garbage bag and space blanket and the SAR and the camelback and the safety plan....

Saturday Apr 14

Strength (nycb 2) 55:00 [1]
weight:146lbs
Felt good though knees complain.

We now have one lone daff, by the house, trying to open up. Think it got the message as it made little progress today.

Friday Apr 13

Trail run 1:06:00 [4]
weight:146lbs shoes: DS Trainer XII
Horse Tr/St Zotique - 50, sunny, dry woods w only a few signs of any snow left.
Good run. Got into a good stride going out working on kick follow-thru which just seemed easy and speed picked up. Nice run.

Wednesday Apr 11

Trail run long 1:22:00 [1]
weight:146lbs shoes: Attack II
Waterfall loop - 40, sunny, clear, dry trail. Was going to be a long easy day, but felt good going out and tried more leg kick form drill. Lasted most of the way out. Then faded and started to slog on the way back, about the time Lyn got frisky. Eventually able to pick it up and keep up. That lasted for about half way back and we both faded. Enjoyed nice liesurely run rest of way back.

Checked out the flower situation - lots of crocus up and lots of daff leaves showing. Tried to warn them to take cover to avoid the forecast snow. Guess they enjoy the sunny day too.

Tuesday Apr 10

Trail run 41:00 [1] 3.0 mi (13:40 / mi)
weight:145lbs shoes: DS Trainer X
Short loop - 40, sunny, blustery. Started slow and lethargic but Lyn was fairly spritely heading out to the stretch zone. Then got into some good strides in spurts as tiredness kept catching up. In the meantime worked on form. Reviewing the great photos posted from the Fox Chase, we noticed the various leg forms. it's hard to know how you really run by looking at your shadow. This was good - I had a bit less heel kick than I thought. Compared it to some of the cadets and to Coach who seem to have good heel follow through and form. So we tried to incorporate that into the run. Surprisingly for little effort the speed picked up nicely. Will have to continue to focus on it and then try to incorporate it into map reading and running thru woods. More to do.

Monday Apr 9

Trail run warm up/down 30:00 [1]
weight:146lbs shoes: VJ Integrator
Gay City - 50, sunny. 15' jog before, stretching. 15' after cooling down.
Orienteering 44:55 [4] *** 5.67 km (7:55 / km)
spiked:9/12c shoes: VJ Integrator
Gay City - Rerun of 10/1/00 Green course, or mod of red (dropped 7,8, 12-14; added 2 Gr controls betw 11 and 15). Nice running, open woods, no leaf out yet.
Plan was to run the Gr course hard like an A meet rather than the Red at a slightly backed off pace. Good clean run and much faster splits than earlier exc major boom on 4, straying L to different rocks (no bag which would have made a diff), slight drift R going to rocks on 11 and also 13a. Probably lost bit over 3', mainly at 4 where stopped and headed back to some other rocks after deciding had been to wrong location.
Fun, nice woods. Great stuff.
