Note
Continued the travel - by air to Bordeaux and car on to Carcans.
Orienteering (Model Map) 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: Salomon XA 2
We all went out on the model map just outside of Maubisson, near our quarters actually. Was really worthwhile as we were able to carefully examine the mapping style and the features, veg for the coming week. All totally different from Italy or home for that matter. Not sure that I've ever been on a map without a single rock or cliff feature!

Unique features included the fire breaks - 20m wide loose sand stretches that we would see frequently in the coming week.
Directional vegetation - stands of pines with aisles cut through at intervals. You run the aisles, not across. Unless of course the setter had other thoughts.
Trails were well defined and unmapped ones were apparent and useful at times.
Rides - not used to straight dashed lines on maps that mean something other than town boundaries. A problem that surfaced during the week.
2.5m contours - If enough are put on top of one another, they add up!
Fast - another fast venue.
Really good stuff.

Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [1]
shoes: VJ Integrator
5 Day - Day 5 - 80, sunny. 1.5k + 15m walk to start, which doesn't do justice to the long down hill to get to the start which was at the base of the local ski area.

Day 5 - Folgaria - Good run with only slight bobbles at:
5. too high and not good attackpoint. better route was lower and stay in field to corner. - 1.30'
10. Missed route and hit trail, but misread it. -1.30'

17/ 23 overall of 51

Overall this was a very well run event. Great location with excellent maps and challenging, physical terrain. Accommodations were great in a nice family run inn with good, adequate meals. Village was quaint small alpine location for fun "we're not in kansas anymore" experience.

Great job to all - and thanks - if you happen to read this commentary.
Note
After the event, the next round of travel began. Barb and Dave dropped us off at the Trento train station - thank you very much. We caught the train to Munich, which actually made it all the way with only a pause at Brenner Pass, to change off the Italian engines, for a 10' extra.

5 Days - Day 4 - 65-70, sunny. Jogging around to start and in warm up map area.

5 Days - Lavarone East - Day 4 - Open woods, many trails with many woods areas looking like trails and not mapped. Difficult to pick out.
Generally tired and became deflated after 4, just wanted to finish.
HR was low, indicating tired condition?
1,2,3 went fine.
4. Started fine to a trail run that was going good but - thought I was picking off features but got on totally wrong trail going S as cruised along, instead on E. Missed junction. Then thought I was on a parallel trail. When got to thicket area, it was much larger and vaguer thicket area than small patch mapped. Also a guy was collecting firewood with his van parked right next to the bag. Circled around figuring bag couldn't be there only to see it 5' later. arghhh! -12'
5. Misread trails, missed trails but this time it worked out - sometime luck happens to cross my path. -1'
6. Took a nice woods run approach to this control, avoiding the trails to enjoy the openness of the area. No longer worried about time. Slightly R on final approach hitting another knoll first. -5'
7. Was stopped by a kid looking for directions. Showed him where he was on the map and in the terrain and oriented the map for him. He just wanted to be led to the control. I left. -1.30'
9. Sort of slogged along to the control.

44th/ 27 overall.
Gee - reading these notes makes it sound like a horrible time! Chalk it up to experience and jet lag really catching up.

Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [1] ***

Day 3 - 65-70, sunny. Nice running. Jogged to the start - 1.2k + 110m climb. Grabbed the 1:15000 Warm up map and used it to the start without realizing until saw Lyn with a 1:10000. We both had 10000 maps all week and hadn't realized there were 2 model maps available. Jogged around a bit with it to resynch thinking.

5 Days - Day 3 Lago di Lavarone W - Started well but got sloppy. Tired? probably from the combination of the hike and remnants of jet lag. Legs (quads) were sore from the run off the mt.

The good part: 1 and 2. Right on.
3. Dropped to the field, too low instead of continuing to contour. -30"
4. Tried to run trails and missed badly. Then put off by an unmapped fence - not sure if meant to be crossed or not as temporary. Wound up going way around once figured out location. -5'
5. Again problems with the trails, misread and then went to parallel depression. Then wandered ? before happening upon the feature- definitely not good. -7'
6. Left 5 with compass on 4 pointing to 3!!! Got a bout 50m before figured it. Then a bad route that added a bunch of extra lines and no good AP. -5'
8. Didn't O in final part of leg, just running after stream of people, so bad route to water and then missed bag being too L. -1'
10. Bit of indecision about which part of major hill to climb to get to the control. -30"

32nd/20 overall.

Hiking 1:40:00 [1] **
shoes: Salomon XA 2
Folgaria - Rest day, so we hiked up to the top of the ski lift, a long mostly gradual climb up set of switchbacks overlooking the valley down to Rovereto, except it was mostly socked in and we only occasionally got the view. Had lunch at the Alpine Hut waiting out the T'storm that developed just as we got to the hut. When it eased a bit after a few hours of nourishment, we headed down, taking the direct under the chair lift route. It was still raining a bit, with thunder and lightning in the region, so headed off at a fair jog down.

5 Days - Day 2 - 65, grey with some sun. Long walk/jog to the start: 2.7k + 55m. Figured out the map first thing, before I started to move, even planned a route. Nice map, good detail.
Orienteering race 45:27 [4] *** 3.9 km (11:39 / km) +150m 9:46 / km
spiked:6/10c shoes: VJ Integrator
Day 2 - Much better run. Good contact all around (or at least better).
1. Started in strange direction, not as planned - pulled L by vague spur?, but settled in and worked way through system of major cliffs and in. Cliffs much like the system at the NAm in Cleveland.
5. Slightly R to a similar feature mapped as an "omega" letter to symbolize charcoal pits we think. Then found bag on huge pit, just L. -2'
6. Dropped R to a similar depression/knoll feature. Quickly relocated. -2'
9. Got sucked over too far by couple of others who caught me. Tried to go too fast rather than focus. - 2'

19th (18 overall). Lyn had a major bobble on one control.

Note: Went back to terry cloth sweat band. Found that the Gutr worked ok when running with head looking forward or up, but for O one must read the map! and look down. The Gutr then dribbles, or pores over the rim onto glasses, map etc. So couldn't be bothered to fight that.

Monday Jul 2

Event: Trento 5-Day

Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [1] ***
shoes: VJ Integrator
5 Days of the Fortresses - Day 1 - 60, grey, nice running. Jog to the start, stretching, more jogging around.

There were long distances to the starts each day. Today was 1.5k with 45m climb. A small warm up map was provided each day of the route for the last 500m or so with a narrow band of typical terrain. In the anxiety to get started, I took the map without knowing my current location and tried to figure it out all the way up along the streamers. Never really did until after the run. Typical trying to go too fast without thinking. A real symptom of jet lag. Turns out the map was handed out just off the edge of the map, though they said we were on it. Even though I had plenty of time, I pressed ahead, in a fog.
Orienteering race 55:06 [4] *** 4.1 km (13:26 / km) +155m 11:18 / km

5 Days - Day 1 - Tried to go carefully, esp after the trip up to the start. Slow, cautious. Generally a good run exc:
1. Slight error to R down wrong slot in trees. Saw bag and to it. -30"
5. Followed guy off road too soon in wrong depression. Corrected through a 20m patch of stinging nettles. Forgot how nasty they are! Took the rest of the day to recover. -1'
6. Too R and overshot in a vague mixed woods area. Hit trail and back to it. -2'
9. Got distracted by others at this common control to several courses and followed out without a good plan, went too low before realizing and didn't have a good relocation point in an open mixed prairie area. Pit was as PG warned - I finally found it when a guy came up out of the ground. Couldn't see the bag until I was looking down from the rim. - 5'
28th on the day. Lyn was 3rd.
