| Headed into Bordeaux to check out the city. Neat old place built along the river Gironde or Garonne, the name changes somewhere along here. They have fixed up the riverfront with a nice park with fun skim pond/fountain. It was hot and everyone was enjoying the coolth. | ||

| Checked out of the Chalet and headed to Lacanau Ocean for a lazy day at the beach. We sat in a cafe way up on the dunes watching the surfers try to catch waves on the rollers that swept in along the lovely beach. The lifeguards were practicing Bay Watch with drills swimming out into the surf, helicopters sweeping around. All very entertaining.
Then headed to our hotel for the next few nights and watched the last 30k of the Tour seeing a breakaway survive, good for him.

| 5 J d F - same map as yesterday with same start, straight up a sand hill trail, same finish, 290m slog down a fire trail of sand, and a control from Day 4 with the same approach!
Good run except for slight bobble to 9, distracted by Susie who was heading in a similar (but not same) direction. (-45") Also lost a minute to 6 in a combination of trying to run around directional veg (wound up going through anyways) and stopped to tie shoe! 19th / 21 overall for the week. The 1'45 would have put me up to 13 today, something to strive for. HR has been high this week and more in my normal range for O. Today might be a bit high ave as I lost the signal for a few controls in the middle of the run. Still was able to run much better than I expected coming over what with the extended injury/low training level leading up to the trip. All in all, a great trip showing that O is the same in Europe as at home. As a Swedish lady said to me - "There are 2000 ways to be humbled in orienteering." Still we ready to go back and tried to be less humbled next time, like always. [Added 7/20]

| 5 Jours de Fr - Map Les Bruyeres II at Bombannes - 70, sunny, getting warmer.
Much hillier terrain with well defined features and veg, some thick. Fire breaks 10m wide and very loose fine sand, like trying to run on beach. Had several sections that I run though one was better to have avoid. The run-in from the Go bag was all loose, 220m! [Correction - 290m!] Good O, tho only a couple of route choice chances. Last couple controls were in a campground and I was thanking the sprint training we have had with the series, followed along perfectly. One bobble on a short leg when distracted by another runner and followed a bit too L (-1'). May have gained several minutes on a couple legs with other routes I didn't see until after. Lots of English here to compare routes with; Have to come back! 2008 Planning starts; first thing is a qwerty keyboard;) 20th today. (That 1 minute would move me up 5 places.) Updated 7/20

| 5 Jours - Day 3 Map: L'Arbousier, N of Lacanau - Better day today. 65, lt rain at start. Glasses fogging. Where's summer?
Fast course. Lost time to 1 going off on dead-end trail too early.(-1.30) Also on 4, missing a depression lost in the green on the top of a hill.(-3') Map had lots of green, but some nice running as well. Subtle, shallow terrain. 51st/28 overall. Very tight competition - doesn't take much to lose a lot of places. Next two days we're in section with much bigger dunes, much more climb. More fun. Updated 7/20 Some one must have complained as my class got 1:10000 maps today and the rest of the week. Instead of the plastic sheets the others got, we had lazer printed copies on paper in plastic bags. Great improvement and can even write on it.

| 5 Jours - Day 2 Map Le Lion II (1:15000) - Unfortunately, not quite as good today (jinxed by too many nice comments from home? Thanks for your thoughts anyway.)
Both of us had bad first controls. Very complicated start with lots of trails and rides. I stopped at a ride 60m from the bag and couldn't find it on the map. Circled around, losing 6'. Ugh. Lyn lost about 15' in similar circumstances. Still fun, different terrain; great experience. Well organized events. Update 7/20 - Headed off at start on a run with vague plan. Hadn't really adjusted to the 1/15 scale and had trouble making sense of the contours just beyond the start. Of course I kept running anyway! until I came to a trail in the woods that I couldn't make out on the map???? Where am I??? Didn't make any sense as I thought I knew exactly where I was. Tried to justify other locations and circled back only to realize I was where I thought I was, just standing on a ride - very well mapped as a straight dashed line. Guess I'm not used to straight dashed lines on maps that are something other than town lines!!! Rest went well - tho wrong attackpoint to 8 and into hill too high; and approach to 13 - turned R instead of L, distracted by another runner.

| 5 Day in France - Map: Les Grands Charrins 3, 1st Day, 80, clear during the run, but showers in the afternoon.
Good day of O. Able to read the contours and veg well. Slight bobbles on two late controls for about 2.5'. Running in the dunes is awesome, complete change from last week in the mts. Never could quite get that together, esp the indistinct trails which kept confusing me. (Will log more on all that when access is available again. This will be infreq until home.) Was a great week overall with Barb, Dave and the DeWitts. We're looking forward to another great one here. It is off to a good start with good runs by all - esp Lyn who had another. Last week she had a 3rd to start and 2nd to end the week. When we left she was holding with first with a sound run. Don't say anything to jinx her. I'm at 21 of 109. [Became 24] Saw Graham Ackland, down from Edinburg. Also have been seeing the Bresemens a lot. Met James Tasker who was in Boston a few years ago and may be back again in the fall, now in Brussells. Strange being amongst so many Oers and knowing so few. Best to all from over here.

| 5 Day - jogging to the start and around a bit after. Bit stiff but feeling good. The aches seem to be getting better without the running on roads. | ||
