| Lovely dry summer day and we decided that lolling around, reading the paper, putzing in the garden and then finally trying to reconcile trip finances was the order of the day. | ||
| Note | ||
| Picked first tomato today - yum! One of the earliest ever for a main crop type for us, non-cherry. | ||

| Ethel Walker Open Space - 70, sunny, clear, crisp, lovely day for a run.
More exploring of the EW area. This was the section to the N, starting at Town Pool and running trails (mostly) to the intersection of Bushy Hill and Stratton Brook. Then checked out some side trails. None connected to make a loop but we jumped the small brook and mushed thru a swamp for something other than out and back. Some nice woods, some thick. Lot of vague featureless terrain with only the shape of the contours for guidance. Imagine - no cliffs, no rock features! Just contours and reentrants. Some might even suggest it was Quantico land on vacation trying to avoid the heat and humidity.

| Spent a bunch of hours working in the garden, mostly pulling up Virginia creeper. If anyone wants some, we have lots. I'll send it back down there, gladly. Or even bring some down in Nov. I'm sure there will still be some around.
Was going to prune and deadhead the rose climbing the trellis by the patio. However Lyn thought she saw a nest in it. Sure enough - we are no longer empty-nesters. For the third time this summer!!! This time looks like a cardinal. Could only see one little mouth on first inspection. Will try to get another peek without disturbing anything. We had a nest in this rose several years ago, but I got over zealous with the pruning and it was too thin last year. This year the combination of rose and clematis must be providing enough cover. What fun.
| Note | ||
| AOWN - Determined that the sighting on the nest was most likely Momma Cardinal, still nurturing the eggs. | ||

| W Simsbury loop with Firetown hills - 70, clearing and much less humid tho roads were wet from early rain. Day has turned into a lovely crisp summer day. very nice.
Easy spin. Body stiff and tight, esp lower back and hams, from all the weeding yesterday. Gradually feeling as in a nearby time zone.
| Note | ||
| Added additional runs and info for 7/9 thru 7/16, our time in France. I have also put together a compilation of some pictures of the trip. | ||

| Trail run 59:00 [1] | ||
| weight:146lbs shoes: DS Trainer XII | ||
| Mcleans - Short loop rev, Purple loop to Spring Pond, home - 70, very humid, a few mossies when we stopped to stretch, buzzing in the hair by FDFs a couple times (got one) but no attacks. Easy run to test the legs. We were both still in the groggy state and not really into a flow. After good running for two weeks, and 5 days rest (some might call it slacking - and they would be right), L hip bit sore, foot drop back but not too bad. Still was good to be back in the woods and running.
Nice to be home! One of the most noticeable differences is the AOWN setting we live in - we've been seranaded by song birds all day. Known ones are cardinals, woodpeckers, wrens, hawks, robins, titmice, chickadees and many more I can't identify.

| Gardening - Spent the early part of the afternoon, until the rains came, trying to get the gardens a bit under control while Lyn mowed the grass (two passes to chop up the grass fine enough not to have to rake). Everything progressing nicely: peas and lettuce have passed and pulled up, broccoli gone to yellow flowers and those heads cut off and to compost, cabbages have headed up nicely, squashes just starting as are cukes, 2 tomatoes have turned orange/red and should be pickable soon and other plants growing madly and got strung into their cages, beans starting up. Peppers barely grown but have a few jalas, eggplants done nothing. Raspberry canes have been trashed by the squirrels who seem to have jumped all over them to get the fruit. Still a few left in this crop but will have to wait for the second crop for more. In the meantime the squirrel population will be greatly reduced (-1 today).
So looks like we be on veggie diet for the summer. That was one of the surprises of the trip for Lyn - the dirth of fresh veg either as salads or side dish in either place. But a surfeit of pomme frittes!

| We made it home late last night - well not late here, just after a long day of flying and sitting in airports or standing in lines to be poked and prodded by our wonderful Insecurity Dept.
The trip as a whole was absolutely great. We had a wonderful time, in great places, with fine food, great people, very nice O in challenging and varied terrain. It seemed like every run was different with new twists to be concerned about. It was much better than we expected, and rewarding. They are not that much better. The O is like O here - very humbling at times. But still great fun. It was great to be back in Europe again. The travel was fine, the people were always friendly and helpful - and interestingly had much the same opinions of our current gov't. We found the orienteering easier than what we tend to run here, probably because I run the Red courses at our local meets while my age group was running ~4k courses with winning times of about 35'. Lyn normally runs Green here but had winning times there of 30' or less. The woods were generally fast with lots of trails, open running but sometimes low visibility. More to come on the specific days which I will try to get to. Other thoughts - If possible would get over early and run model events before the start of the long weeks. The jet lag was definitely a factor though not always apparent. Bobbled legs and confusion were elements of the familiar jet lag syndrome. We tried to put a day in but weather delayed our trip over. I would also avoid a certain US Air and PHL, both have degenerated since past trips making for cattle car conditions. The flights were cheap but you get what you pay for, as always
| Note | ||
| Added notes from Italy courses - sure was worse than I remember. Maybe I shouldn't take notes as I go along. No! I learned that during many jet lag sessions over the years - the only way to even try to reconstruct the early time after the travel is copious notes, and some of them might even make sense. | ||

| For the final rest day in Europe, we headed to St Emilion through the vineyards of Entre der Mers. Felt like we were in "Chocolat". | ||
