| Mcleans West from Firetown up to West Ridge - 70, sunny. Hiked up through the woods. As I mentioned previously, our woods, event these nice open woods, are a lot messier that our Scottish experience. We were constantly dodging deadfall, broken sticks, branches, rocky ground. You could get really bruised and scratched up trying to run through here - great ain't it! There the woods have been so managed for so long everything has been cleaned out and the moss covers what is left. Stand still too long and it will get you too.
Anyway, nice hike up to the top of the ridge with nice view out over town. Lyn practiced a long contour across the slope going out and again back with compass work included. Harder coming back because of a large patch of green we dodge around. Enjoyable but hard work as the cold/allergies (or bottle of wine? Nah) made for slow going.

| Scottish - Added the rest of the week's events last night, 8/7-14, including some of the travel saga. Still waiting for bag #2. May drive to Newark tomorrow and do our own search. We miss those smelly O-clothes so much. | ||

| Normal routine plus additional stretching of hip/lower back. L butt/ham remains achy/tight. Also fighting off either a cold/allergies/Lyme and tired in middle of day. | ||
| Note | ||
| Bag #2 - Was told to process a claim form as probably not likely to find it the longer it goes. They want the original proof of purchase for anything over $100! How do we get that for tent/sleeping bag/O clothes a few years old? Sounds like a write off and start over. This is getting more depressing. | ||

| Horse Tr-Esker Rd - Purple Tr - Spring Pond - 70, humid.
Good run. Got into a nice light stride going out the road. First in a long time that could work around the foot drop. Stretched and then hit the Esker. Able to stride. Worked on extending and pushing off, nice smooth effort. Kept it going but we decided to cut it short at Spring Pond and not over do it. Good decision as able to keep it at nice pace rest of way.

| Still waiting for bag #2, lost somewhere in Newark. The agent in Aberdeen short ticketed us, and though she said otherwise, did not include the BDL leg. Normally I try to carefully check, having been burned in the past, but was spaced out this time after standing in line for 5 hours to get rebooked after the flight back to Amsterdam got canceled.
The other part was the agent. I had realized that this was the third country we had orienteered in this summer, and we could not understand the natives in any of them, this agent included. But still, my bad for not checking.

| Stretching 25:00 [0] | ||
| weight:143lbs | ||
| Focus on hips, lower back, hams, quads. | ||
| Cycling (Road) 1:00:00 [2] 12.0 mi (4:59 / mi) | ||
| W Simsbury loop w Firetown hills - 65, grayish, humid starting to build. Good effort trying to spin rate up. Lyn was pushing too, so had to keep up.
AOWN - Passed the peacock again. Must be a pet as was in a front yard along with 5-6 red hens. Further on saw a doe in the woods15' from the road, trying to be invisible. Later we were having coffee on the front porch watching the birds come in to the feeders, just above our heads. Noticed a movement in the mulch of the little garden that gets the seed refuse swept into it. A little gray vole (?) was scurrying around just under the surface but coming up enough to be seen. It's probably the beast that devours tulip bulbs, plant roots and other things we try to plant in the front. Now on the target list!

| (injured) | ||
| Stepped in a hole under ferns during the bushwack section of run yesterday. Seemed to be able to run it out. Today R ankle, outside, just behind ankle bump, is sore when stepped upon. Not badly, but noticeable. Will have to monitor. | ||
| Note | ||
| Scottish 6 Day Adventure - I have started to fill in the gap, starting with travel 8/2 and am up to Day 1, 8/5. Will get to more as time goes by.
Another musing - One thing we like is good coffee, as our taste developed in recent years with the availability of Starbucks' beans and good coffee makers. I had forgotten English coffee but was disappointed. Had thought that it was quite good way back when. Turns out all we got served in Scotland seemed to be instant, Nescafe mostly, and don't bother to ask for decaf! No coffee bars anywhere.

| Road run warm up/down 22:00 [1] | ||
| shoes: DS Trainer XII | ||
| Roads out to Beaver Tr & back - plus stretching. 66, sunny, bit humid. Body not ready for this and had trouble get foot steps right. Spent extra time stretching, esp ham string, quad. | ||

| Beaver Tr, out - Wasn't up to much so an easy jog out. (What's with the weight? That's down 3# from july and about 10 from last year. And NO, I'm not trying to catch the G!)
Lyn was feeling spunkier (a Charlie term?) and did the Purple loop. She had more of AOWN experience. Crossing the bridge, she heard cracking branches but could see nothing - who's coming to get me? As she climbed the hill though, she looked down at more cracking branches to spot a bear that spotted her, about 40' away. She took off up the hill not wondering too much about bear. Then on the final hill on the Horse Tr, another cracking noise and 4 deer burst across the trail 10' in front of her. More wild life than we saw in 10 days in Scotland!
| woods run 10:00 [2] | ||

| Beaver Woods - Decided to head back bushwacking in the woods rather than the trails, to check them out and get a different motion going. Felt better as went along, mostly because of the needed focus to pick way through. Stayed mainly on the rides created a few years ago when logging was done to diversify the forest. The rides are generally passable but the woods have gotten thick in between.
One thing we both noticed was how clean the woods were in Scotland. After 8 days running in various areas, we had only a couple scratches. After this short run I have scratches on both legs! Their woods all seem to be managed with most deadfall removed or straightened up. In many stands lower branches are removed after a few years of growth to enhance maturation. Trees are all in nice rows with grassy footing. That's the good ones. The ground in others is quite bumpy with the bumps covered with 6" or more of moss/grass/or other spongy footing. Makes for tricky running, have to be quite careful with foot placement.

| Back to sunny and warm conditions after adventurous travels.Summary of Scottish 6-Day:
Weather - generally wet and in the 50-60 range, with some spells of sun mid-week. Able to get ready and start each day in the dry but frequently the rain returned during the run which didn't really affect the run. The O - excellent. Great terrain with each day different and different from home, although Days 4 and 6 on glacial/dune terrain was similar to France and Michigan. Courses were good, very challenging and demanding. Maps were all very good. Printed on water proof paper which was a very good decision. My performance - Started mid-pack and gradually deteriorated during the week. I was having one serious boom each day, of 5 to 10', all week until #6 when got burned twice. The competition was very intense. With 150 in my class, 5' error cost 20 or so places. That being said, we didn't expect much as I have been nursing the back/hip/leg issue since April and had reduced training that should have gone into preparation for this summer's adventures. So the fall off in performance, while disappointing, was not unexpected. We mainly went for the experience and enjoyed the whole affair. It was great fun. I'll post more overall thoughts as the fog between the ears clears a bit more (probably won't totally), and will post details of the various days - in due course. (Great to be home to sunshine. Now if our bags would surface...)

| Travel day - Plan to return KL to AMS, NW to BDL. Got on the plan in Aberdeen expecting push back when Capt came on babbling in Dutch. No reaction until he switches to English to inform us that the fuselage had been pranged by a baggage cart and was no longer flight worthy. Go inside for rebooking. Off we go to stand in a very English line for 5 hrs waiting for one Customer Service Rep to process us. Like the Glaciers! Barely perceptible motion but no complaints by the line except if someone tries to jump in!
Got rerouted onto Virgin Atl via Heathrow to Newark to BDL and bags supposedly had the same. Turns out the bags were checked only to Newark! We made it smoothly through Heathrow (the thought of LHR had me very worried but that was fine) onto Virgin for a very nice and enjoyable flight. The the attempts to transfer at Newark, claim bags, drop off for forwarding, switch terminals, and half hour trying to get thru security to arrive after flight departure. Got rebooked for next morning with a stay at HoJos with breakfast. Asked about bags and was assured they would either be on the flight or tomorrow. Same when checked Baggage Cust Serv. It wasn't until arriving at BDL and checking with Cust Serv that she realized the bags were short checked. Argh!
