| Lots aches keeping surfacing as try to move around this very slow Sunday morning. All this to get a phone call that M locked herself out of the house. Not totally her fault as the door has a wonky lock that can stick. But she has every other possible entrance bolted and locked, so no possible alternative way in. A neighbor broke a window to gain access. Guess the broken wrist didn't help..... | ||

| Orienteering race 29:20 [4] *** 2.9 km (10:07 / km) | ||
| spiked:7/9c weight:144lbs shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| Kent 4-Map-O Club Getaway - 65, sunny. Good run though hesitated in couple areas trying to read map. | ||
| Orienteering 42:36 [4] *** 3.3 km (12:55 / km) | ||
| spiked:3/5c shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| 4-Map-O #2 Pond Mt - 55, with rain squall going thru from #3-5. Thought map would wash away as didn't take map bag.
Again had trouble reading map due vague colors of printing - contour line an off greenish color. Hesitated a bit approaching 2. Then veered quite far R leaving it. Corrected and ran thru blueberry to trail. Took spectacular fall dropping down hill from 3: toe jammed a 2' branch straight on. It pivoted me up and over about its opposite end and dumped me to the ground. Fortunately was softish landing in an area with lots of rock. One of the many aches from the day is the L hip on which must have landed. Rest went ok, though a bit cautiously as seemed to be catching toes frequently.
| Orienteering 38:27 [4] *** 3.3 km (11:39 / km) | ||
| spiked:5/6c shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| 4-Map-O #3 Macedonia - Good run all around though slightly to R at 4 and lost 20" or so. | ||
| Orienteering race 1:20:51 [2] *** 3.3 km (24:30 / km) | ||
| spiked:3/8c shoes: VJ Integrator | ||
| #4 Skiff Mt Night-O - This went quite a lot slower than earlier run. #3 was basically the same course, same distance and half the time, with none of the problems. Shows the significance of darkness.
Bit L on 1 seeing Glen's light leaving and thinking it was the reflector. Corrected and found it. 2 - again bit R but came in ok. 3- ok 4 - Quite a ways R. Hit some walls and relocated along them to control. 5 - Bounced of marsh to control. 6- ok 7 - Big trouble. Mapping gave me trouble. Went in to area where thought control would be - nothing. Checked wall to S and back. Over to end on N wall and pace counted the 50m plus another 50 (and I never pace count!). Back N across wall to trail, further along trail to a L jog and one final attack. Across an unmapped reentrant and up to a shelf and saw a reflection - Arghhh! Finished. Fun effort. Had a Walmart multi-beam light on long beam, held in hand for better ground shadow visiblity. As approached controls, held near head to get reflection. Worked great and almost able to run full, well full isn't all that fast after 3 maps these days, speed. Fun event. Thanks Peter. Guess it may be one of the last in NW CT.

| Trail run 57:00 [1] | ||
| weight:143lbs shoes: Attack II | ||
| Beaver Tr - 68, very humid going out turning to thick mist on way back. Checked out a couple slopes off the trail on the way back for potential hill 'peats. First had some slash from the logging of few years back to contend with, very manageable but Lyn didn't like it. Found two other stretches with good possibilities. Did 4 x 30-45" 'peats which actually felt good but hard work. Need lot more. | ||

| Recent reads: The Last Chinese Chef - Very nice overview of current practices in China with extensive historical, philosophical reference plus some current social context all wrapped around a so-so plot line. The food part makes it worth it. I made several trips to various parts of China back just as the "door" was opening in a very uncertain process. The BJ described here is completely different from what I experienced. The changes seem phenomenal. We did get hints of the food potential, but, being naive Yanks, did not appreciate the food or its context. | ||

| W Simsbury loop/flat, no hills - 52, clear w light clouds. Wore new wind jacket which turns out to be on the big side and flaps around the arms. Very annoying. May try to exchange. First use, but got it last spring and it turned hot before I could try it.
In afternoon, spread lime around the lawn and garden to keep the moss at bay. Hopefully the incursion from N MA will be deflected.

| Trail run intervals 1:15:00 | ||
| weight:144lbs shoes: NB1060 | ||
| Horse Tr - 52, clear. Warmup, stretches, then started on the HT and Lyn gets spunky - want to do some pick ups? And off she goes: 1' on/ 1' easy down to the main gate. On the way back along the main road, we just went at a hard clip to the 2nd junction ( about 9') and again from there to the 2nd bridge. Struggled to keep up until the last stretch. Guess the butt finally eased, or stretched or warmed up or stopped resisting, as was able to get a good stride with follow through. So the last bit and the road home actually felt ok.
Stopped at the stretch spot to check out the hill going down to the beaver pond as a potential hill work site. From the trail it looked clean and a reasonable grade. It was for the bit visible from the trail. It then went into a steep drop to the stream with some dead fall making it rather unappealling all in all. In the afternoon we made another pass at the leaves, turned over more garden and spread rye while Lyn mowed the grass (we were looking for some moss for a B'day present but none available), and replaced the rusted out tub chimney - ahhh!
