Sunday Jun 1

Event: WCOC Hemlock Hills

Orienteering race 1:34:15 [3] *** 6.4 km (14:44 / km) +210m 12:39 / km
spiked:14/19c weight:147lbs shoes: VJ Twister
Wooster Mt/Hemlock Hills - Red - 75, sunny, humid in the woods.

Nice extension to the Bennett's Pond map into more open woods with some sections quite rocky under foot, good training for South Mt. Had a really good run going up to 16 when brain farts started to encroach, maybe from lack of water(?). (Guess I may have to start carrying my own for longer runs in hot weather with none on the route. Summer rules!) Attacked up reentrant off wrong marsh to W and fumbled for a bit till I looked more carefully. Finally got it, esp the fact that the E side of the reentrant was supposed to be gentle, not steep and rocky. Then 17 cut around spur too high and overshot. 19 I got ok but was in more of a fog and didn't take the best or aware route.
FR= 9.39k/260m climb (ST); 7.9k/1484m TC

Still, very fine map and fun course. Great job, Rick.

Jogging/stretching before going out.

red - Splits

Saturday May 31

Note
Finished planting the garden yesterday and today with the peppers, basil and beans going in yesterday and Lyn planted her eggplants today after putting flowers in other areas. Then she attacked the daffodils. Boy they have a way of multiplying. She pulled up a couple clumps that must have had 50 bulbs in each, and we have clumps everywhere. They're taking over!!!!!

Friday May 30

Trail run warm up/down 54:00 [2] 6.8 km (7:56 / km)
weight:146lbs shoes: Attack II
To Y & back - 73, sunny, clear. Another really nice day.

30' To Y, incl stretching. Got into a really nice stride, which worried me a bit in the back of my mind as we had to run back somehow - no money for a cab with us. Went well any way.

24' back - Sluggish to start, but got going again once we crossed into Mcleans.

AOWN - Saw several Jack-in-the-pulpits in Munnisunk Woods in a bit of marshy area.
Water (laps) 15:00 [2]
Laps in between the two sessions above. Tried out a bit of my understanding of the Total Immersion concept, more rolling of the body during the stroke, which went fairly well until I tired.

4xcrawl
4xbreast
8xcrawl

Gradually building up the laps, though I was beat after these and dreading the run home.
Note
Heading out this morning for our adventure to the Y, we came across an interesting new flower. Can't figure out if it's good or and invader. Pretty though.

Thursday May 29

Trail run 1:00:00 [1]
weight:148lbs shoes: Mizuno Inspire
Esker-Purple-Spring Pd - 65, severe clear, dry. Beautiful day.
Very easy run: recovery for me, quite tired from yesterday, and a trail run for Lyn. Her first run in 3 weeks, not counting the limited effort last weekend. Didn't seem to change things; still a niggly ache so will continue to go very easy.

Nice day for a run. Stopped at Spring Pond to watch a turtle sunning itself on a tree fallen out into the water, very peaceful.
Note
This must be the year for plumbing. Today was outside matters. Went up to do the simple task of clear out the gutters. No problem - normally. 3 hours later ---ugh. They were clogged from the spring seed season/winter stuff which was expected. But one was clogged in the elbows of the downspout that no end of prodding with a snake, flushing with the hose would dislodge. In the end had to disassemble and unjam the down elbow which was quite solid with pine needles and other detritus. Then flushed all the gutters with the hose.

Is it condo time yet?
Note
Then again, we have days like this when we can enjoy the garden, invaders and all.

Wednesday May 28

Trail run warm up/down 33:00 [1] ** 3.9 km (8:28 / km)
weight:148lbs shoes: DS Trainer XII
Tobacco Roads to Westminster - 60, sunny, some breeze
Easy run with stretching part way over. Missed the big reentrant going S of Bissel Bk and almost wound up in a backyard. Then found a bit of trail that goes right over to the athletic fields.

Tobacco must be out these days. The fields are being worked, plowed, fertilized and planted but looked like a squash type plant. All the poles for the shade netting have been taken out as well. But the workers were out there and urged me on as I ran by.
Road run intervals 30:00 [4] 2.4 km (12:30 / km)
shoes: DS Trainer XII
Westminster Track - Plan: 1x400;1x800 with 2' and 3' rcy respectively. Repeat. Again, more interesting discrepancies between TC and ST.

Split / Dist TC / ST / rcy
1.38 / 397m / .39k / 2'
1.39+1.44=3.23/ 405+412=817/.40+.41=.81 / 3'
1.38 / 408 / .39 / 2'
1.41+1.44=3.25/407+414=821/.39+.41=.8 / 3.30'

If the gentle reader can figure that all out, let me know. (Note the singular;-} Seems like they don't really agree much except that I ran more than a lap several times or the laps got longer. They sure flet like they did.

Anyway - the main point is the pace held pretty steady though the effort seemed greater. The various parts didn't (and aren't) complaining too much. This makes for a nice workout: good warm up, intervals and a nice run home, though the thought of the run home is in the back of the mind during the track runs. Still not much different than realizing that there are several more controls to deal with.

Note: Had the FR on 1 second recording. Last week it was Smart Recording. Not sure if it made much difference.
Trail run tempo 26:29 [3] ** 4.17 km (6:21 / km)
shoes: DS Trainer XII
Home - Checked out the trail to the brook and a ride up to western fields. Guess it's for the sewer line. Then a good hard run home. This was good as I kept telling myself that I would stop half way or so at the shady bit just past the power lines. Felt good so kept going. Then figured I would stop by the little pond; kept going until the final small hill home to walk for cool down. Good fun.

Meanwhile Lyn was off trying Total Immersion, at least the starting lesson. Be swimming like a fish before long.

Tuesday May 27

Hiking (Mowing) 30:00 [1]
weight:148lbs
85, full sunny and humid. A first taste of summer. Snuck in before the T'storms and torrents came later in the afternoon.
Chopping down the extensive growth accumulated. Surprised the neighbors allow us to stay as we definitely keep the grass longer than what seems to be the accepted standard. But it grows nice and green, takes no extra watering or other special care. just feed and lime twice a year and go off and play in the woods.
Was going to plant the last seedlings of this batch, the peppers and basil, but it was brutally hot and humid to put anything out, plus the threat of T'storms would pulverise newly planted stuff. Tomorrow?
Note
Spent a long time with excell this afternoon trying to simply work a spreadsheet that calculates gas mileage. It's been about a year since I last used it (last year's Team Trials) but what could change? Don't know but I kept getting #VALUE! in the calculated mpg box. Eventually noticed that all decimal points have changed from periods to commas. WTF - Have the Euros invaded us? Don't get it. even when I used a comma, entering 7,188 for gallons kept being converted to 7188,00. So I had to do extra multiplying by 1000 to get any sort of answer. Maybe I'll go back to my slide rule.

Orienteering warm up/down 20:00 [1]
shoes: VJ Twister
DVOA Star Village/Lehigh U Team Trials Long - 80, sunny, very warm.
Warmup on model map, discovered how rocky the ground and trails were. Considering changing to trail shoes. Then over to check out Finish and Pavi and Bob L both confirmed the rocky terrain - thanks to both. Changed shoes and continued jogging a bit and stretching.
Orienteering race 1:07:56 [4] *** 6.6 km (10:18 / km) +265m 8:34 / km

Star Village - Team Trials Long Green X -
Rocky terrain with lots of small sharp rocks under foot, in woods and on trails. Much like mt bike trails in Penwood with the trap rock. Lots of small mt bike trails, some good/ some vague and indistinct. Woods quite blah with limited distinctive features to catch on.
Good run though, mainly trail and roads but limited foot speed to take advantage of that. Like Sat, bungled 1 a bit going to a red control nearby. Saw mine as soon as realized wrong number. Long slow trail run to 2 picking off small trails but lost contact in final bit catching on bend just below bag. A few more hesitations along the way and then on 9 couldn't tell which trail was on and went just below control and approached some houses. Saw bag when turned around, just missed it.
Fun course.9th on Green X, 2nd M60
FR: TC=7.77k; ST=7.86k

Congratulations to all that made the Team and the good efforts by their challengers. Thanks to DVOA for a fine weekend with good courses and excellent organization all around.
