Event: WCOC Crandalls Park

Trail run warm up/down 10:00 [1]
weight:146lbs shoes: VJ Twister
Crandall Park - Tolland - 75, humid.
Jogged around ball fields just a bit and some stretching.
Orienteering race 57:16 [4] *** 5.5 km (10:25 / km)
spiked:13/14c shoes: VJ Twister
Crandall Red - Still humid, now threats of T'storms.
Good run. Was careful, checking location and planning route as went along. Worked well except on 7 where I went way off to the R, stopping when looking down at a stream and seeing no cliffs or hint of cliffs along the way. Was about 75m N of the bag on a 125m leg. Can't blame that on the map being off, as in lined up with True N vs Mag N. Oops. Tried more pace counting along the way with random results. Could not get a consistent count - need more work. Also midway along from 7 to 8, stopped to help a tie-dyed woman on Orange. Was totally out of position going the wrong way on a trail without a clue as to location. Tried to get her going in the correct direction and using her compass. Not sure she got it.
FR = 7.52k

Fun course. Thanks Jim and Rich, and Clint for the map.
Orienteering race (Sprint) 20:25 [4] *** 2.2 km (9:17 / km)
spiked:7/8c shoes: VJ Twister
Crandall Sprint A - Grey, but the T'storms came through with some light rain and a distance flash and thunder at 4, and a closer flash and crack at 5. As these were the two farthest controls, kept going. That was it for the storm and had stopped by the time I finished.
Pretty good run. Only miss was on 2 - went in too soon when I saw another control from the road. Corrected as soon as I got into the woods and realized it was on the wrong side of the hill. Had taken the long way to there on the road as it appeared that some kind of party was going on along the straighter route. Probably gave up a minute or so.
FR=2.61k
Orienteering race (Sprint) 20:02 [4] *** 2.2 km (9:06 / km)
spiked:6/7c shoes: VJ Twister
Crandall Sprint B - Storm passed and all fine.
After another break of about 15', went out. Missed the trails going to 1 and went way around to the NE, worth a minute maybe. Was a good trail and not too bad. Rest ok.
FR= 2.67k

Then hung around for an extra hour or so for a couple from DVOA to get out of the woods. He was up wandering around looking at "extra" trails. She was trying to capture her cat. When he got out of the woods, we left. Not responsible for stray cats. Wonder if they ever got to Maine.

Red - Splits

Sprint A - Splits

Sprint B - Splits

Cycling (Road) 1:06:00 [1] 13.8 mi (4:46 / mi)
weight:147lbs
W Simsbury loop w Firetown - 65, sunny, clear. Seemed like a lot of traffic but not really too bad. Lyn wasn't happy about it though. Still, nice ride, easy spin. Not much push in the legs. Need more saddle time

Note
(rest day)
Turned into a rest day and the week turning into support the med industry. Today was eyes day, including dilating which takes most of the rest of the day to recover. Would have tried but had a false start with the bank and money transfers. Our wonderful security world requires all sorts of extraneous info to move money around. They can waste billions; I can't move a few thou!

Did get a chance to put in a few more veggies to fill a couple holes that developed and just squeeze in more for fun: 2 diff kinds of tomatoes, found some swiss chard, will try some beets and more parsley - for Vit K! Can't find it at CVS so trying sprigs of parsley.

AOWN: One of the holes developed twice - first a tomato plant dies, then Lyn put in an eggplant. It totally disappeared. There was an animal run under it so we presume it was a vegetarian animal. Have actually left that spot blank until a solution is found- vit K?

Trail run warm up/down 1:05:00 [1] *** 7 km (9:17 / km)
weight:148lbs shoes: Attack II
Beaver Tr o/b - 62, clear, dry, sunny -
This was a tech training day. We headed over to the Bear Woods along the Beaver Tr to practice pace counting. So on the way, we tried to calibrate our paces on the trail and figure out location. Pace was about 47/100m going out; closer to 50 coming back.
Orienteering (Pace trng) 35:00 [1] *** 3.2 km (10:56 / km)
shoes: Attack II
Bear Woods - More pace count work, plus running on compass and map reading. Nice open woods with pines to reduce viz. Pace worked out closer to 55 for this part. May just use a generic 50 so I can keep the numbers and the math simple.
Note
Rehab - I hate the medical industry!!! Got there early to fill out the paper work per instructions. Nobody there but a sign directing to wait, someone will be along. 20" later, and now into my time, still nobody. So I stand at the window and can see the therapist and a patient in the next room. She ignores me until finally I bang on the glass window breaking her spell. Finally get going with description of the foot drop saga from last year up to present as best as memory can. Like the doctor, foot drop is an alarm bell and she was concerned.

She went thru an extensive sequence of body examinations and then strength evaluations looking for pain indicators and differences. No pains but the lower left leg is weaker than the R, probably left over from the foot drop. The FD seems to have resolved pretty well otherwise. She thinks it may have been caused by a distorted disc impinging on nerves. She also said my hamstring were close to normal, not tight at all. But the illiopsoas was tight and needed stretching. It's hard to stretch correctly. So next visit will be focussed on correct stretch technique followed by a trial traction session to see if that helps.

Trail run long 1:20:00 [2]
weight:148lbs shoes: DS Trainer XII
Waterfall Trail o/b - 65, clear, dry, sunny day. Very nice.
We both went out tentatively, not knowing how our respective hams would respond to going long. Got into good strides going out at an easy pace with Lyn leading. Just fine. I led coming back and got going at a brisker pace that held up well. Did several long pushes at a good pace and felt ok. Lyn held off, not having done much long running lately.
Note
A dog tick bite from the Hemlock Hills meet, 6/1, has flared up into a 5" pink circle with a 1" cherry red center and started to get sore. So broke down today and went to see the Dr. Also had the deer tick from Saturday night in mind. An interesting session, as the ticks became secondary - he said, looks infected. I'll give you anti-biotics for it. Do the full course, 20 days. And then we proceeded to explore the initial tale I gave him about the strange foot drop problem I had last year. He was quite concerned and kind of abused me, in a nice way, for not coming in then. He thinks it probably was a pinched nerve in the lumbars and I should get rehabbed, possibly mri even. There still is a bit of tingling in the front shin, so he's worried. Off to rehab tomorrow;-} Maybe they can fix me.

Monday Jun 16

Cycling (Recumbunt) 20:00 [2]
weight:148lbs
Was going to spin for 10' and then stretch for 20 and meet Lyn in the pool. But when I started, they were just starting the 18th with Tiger down (as in losing by) one. One hole took 20' to play! Watching my garden grow or me running through the woods is faster action than this. But it was fun. And then OT! So stuck around some more for:
Stretching (Nautilus) 10:00 [0]
Not sure how long this lasted and it wasn't intense. Did some of the leg machines, for the first time in months, then stretched some, and then they were in the rough or just close, and then some abs, and then on the green, and some more abs, and he blows the putt and shower and try to find Lyn. Fun event. My golf for several years though.
