Note
We survived O-ringen and can only say it was quite overwhelming. It was definitely fun and worth the trip, but it was almost record numbers so made a mass of everything. Having a good group from the us to hang with made it more enjoyable. Housing was really spread out, making for afeeling of detachment.

The O varied with some good days and some major clangers, like Fri. Started to make some sense of the marshes, but certainly respect them. Would take a lot to master them, technically and physically. Tough running.

More as wifi access allows. Now enjoying the civilized life in the midst of Stockholm - life is good.
C • Sounds really tough 3
Hiking 1:00:00 [1] *
Wandering around Stockholm old town looking for a place for dinner, and then poking about for several hours.

Friday Jul 25

Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [1]
shoes: VJ Twister
Day 5- 80, hot, sunny
Marshes hard to run, soft and wet. Tired, long week settling in.
Orienteering race 1:13:54 [4] *** 4.4 km (16:48 / km)
spiked:4/7c shoes: VJ Twister
Lindvallen - The worst day - saved my clangers for the last day on the start of a long leg. Worth - about 15'. After that just slow.

Had a slight bobble on 1, but caught it quickly. Headed off on 2, a 1.3k leg through the marshes and small hills. Instead of heading down the marshes as planned, I crossed and climbed into the small hills. Eventually hit what seemed to be a ski trail, nice running g in direction I wanted to a marsh feature like I wanted except this was all parallel by about 250 and I got dumped to a stream parallel to the one I wanted but in green. Finally found the wrong rock and relocated. Took my time and read the terrain and followed the correct marshes very carefully after that.

Big lesson learned about the more normal Swedish terrain, besides the physical nature of the footing.

Overall a good week of fun. Difficult O, unbelieveable extravagaza, like marathons have become, or skiing.

Thursday Jul 24

Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [1]
shoes: VJ Twister
Day 4- Hundfjallet - 70, bright sun and hot at base. Late start. Chair lift to top of skihill. Legs dead during an initial short jog. Spent long time doing the rehab stretches and was much btletter after.
Orienteering race 44:36 [4] *** 3.8 km (11:44 / km)
spiked:6/9c shoes: VJ Twister
Start high on mounain and except for going across a deep reentrant, was flat or downhill. Nice open terrain through heather, some was spongy but nice running.
Lost about 5' on 2, missing it just high. On 3, climbed long steep reentrant and went R. Was straight. Found it after relocating with bearing back across to lift house. Long leg to 6, drifted Rbut corrected atend. Nice steep mossy downhill through bumps like moguls on last leg - fun .

Wednesday Jul 23

Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [1] 1.1 km (27:16 / km)
shoes: VJ Twister
Day 3- Narfjallet - 65, sunny
Run to start, stretches
Orienteering race 48:27 [4] 4.1 km (11:49 / km)
shoes: VJ Twister
Day 3- problem in vague area to 1 and 2. Slowed and then ok. Slow going though on long leg across marsh and gradual uphill, spongy moss footing. 6' or so errors.
140/ 137 overall

Tuesday Jul 22

Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [1] 2.6 km (11:32 / km)
shoes: VJ Twister
Day 2- 45, clear, N wind at start but warming as sun came up. We were in the first start block. I had second start, which meant watching lots of people roar by when I happened to be on track.
Another long walk to the start from the Vassoloppet start area but different direction.
Orienteering race 51:38 [4] *** 2.8 km (18:26 / km)
spiked:7/12c shoes: VJ Twister
Berga by, sodra - Area just S of Day 1 #4, where I was troubled. Very detailed O, vis low, footing soft moss with lumpy rocks under. Kept drifting R. Going to fast, not reading map detail and blew 1,4,5,6. Slowed way down to read map, use a/ps, much better - Duh! Even worse, I had the earliest start- so no tracks but lots of people flying by as I wandered.

Fastest 26:35
Was 155/ now 142 overall

The best part of today was the warm shower after, with about 500 new Swedish friends. Yesterday was late and the water was cold.

Monday Jul 21

Event: Oringen 2008

Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [1] 2.7 km (11:07 / km)
shoes: VJ Twister
O-ringen Day 1 - 65, mix sun clouds
Walk to the start up the start of the Vassaloppet route, 250m of climb amongst endless hordes.
Then some stretching and off.
Orienteering race 45:20 [4] *** 3.9 km (11:37 / km)
spiked:4/5c shoes: VJ Twister
Berga by, norra - Late start so lots of herd paths, just be careful to pick right one - bearing! Paths went almost to control then dispersed for the final search. Good for the first three, two long legs - 1&1.3k - around a 400m leg. Then another short leg in the thick detail stuff, over 10' vs 12:46 for the third leg leaping over rough slash. Disappointing intro.
128 of 210 or so but well back
