| Camp Mattatuck, Plymouth - 70, clear, dry, lovely day
Checking out BS camp for potential mapping project with Rick and Susie. Looks good - nice woods with some green areas, good trail system, good facilities, large state forest surrounding the camp area. Worth more looks around trails and in woods.

| Horse Tr - St Zotique Loop - 65, overcast, humid
Nice run on one of our favorite trails. Warmed up, stretched and then Lyn led from the Canton Rd trail crossing to the Main Gate at a zesty pace - nice long steady. Sauntered up towards the Pond and started up again. Felt good so went off at the same pace, on to the bridge. That's longer than normal as we usually break at the trail junctions. This pushed it just a bit beyond the comfortable - very nice.

| Have added the last two race days from the French adventure. It was truly a fine week. They did a great job of organization, had great detailed maps in extraordinarily detailed terrain. They provided unusual formats throughout that presented continual challenges - 1:7500 and 1:5000 maps instead of the normal 1:10 or 15! Was that done for the extra detail or to throw us out of our normalcy. The Elites were faced with different challenges throughout. A WRE on the first day at 1:10 and other scales the remainder. A Chase start on Day 3, a mass start on Day 4 to generate seedings for the Orient-Show in the afternoon (1:1500 scale). A final day of Chase starts as well. Pity the conflicts prevented more from NA from attending. As it were, we seem to have held up our part. There was also a Canadian contingent that did well, was fun watching their results. | ||

| Another note - I wrote this on Aug 7:
Subject: Notes on our Camping Experience We are camping at the 6 tag de Aveyron. Of course it's the south of France in early August and the weather is beautiful, dry, hot afternoons and cool nights. Perfect! The real joy though is the ambiance. We are surrounded by campers from all over. Across the lane is a crowd of Irish, next door on one side is an English chap glowing from the news of his first grandson and on the other side are Italians - they offered us grappa last night but discretion prevailed. Down the lane is a bus load of Portugese juniors with a mass of tents including dining and eat tents. There are Suisse, Czechs, Poles, a few Australians and us including Kseniya who arrived late Sat afternoon. Poor thing arrived walking down the lane pulling her huge suitcase after a saga experience. So I sit here hearing a cacophony of sounds and languages in the evening light with everyone mellow from their evening meal. Great fun. Our campsite and our Kitchen

| Swimming at the Y - Haven't done this for a while either and struggled. Lost too much body mass and tend to sink. Managed 10 laps: 2 breast, 6 crawl, 2 breast. Then crawled into hot tub. | ||

| Added lots of notes from the French section of our trip. A few more to do, but dinner calls - and it smells delightful. Must pore the wine;-} | ||

| Stretching 20:00 [0] | ||
| weight:143lbs | ||
| Stretch out the stiff and aches first thing in the morning - still on the Ratlum schedule though not sure how long it will last. Then off for MwM on W and later, the final Rehab session. The aches, original ones seem mostly gone but must continue to stretch and do the theraband work. Then she worked on my neck - sore since falling asleep on the train to Salen, several jet-lags ago. Must stretch neck and improve posture. | ||

| Horse Tr-Purple loop - 67, humid and wet in the woods with the streams in full spate after heavy rains recently, 5" over the weekend and 1" last night. Conditions are quite a change from the hot, dry of the Aveyron which I'll discuss in due course as the let-down chores get taken care of, perhaps even tonight if I wake up at 3:30 again.
Nice run through home territory again after two long travel days. Took it easy but felt really good and realized it would be better to hold back as the goodness feeling was either from the jet-lag or two days rest. This week is to be an easy recoup and chores week. Get going again next week. Spent the afternoon tending to garden needs, quite overgrown with all the rain. Should be dry and discouraging growth but the grass was high and would be harvestable for hay. The garden was also needing tending. Mixed crops so far: no main crop tomatoes yet but small cherries are starting to ripen, nice crops of jalapenas and cayennes (good for interesting chile last night upon return), squash, cukes, beets, chard, kale all doing well. Yum. AOWN - Discovered a reason the lawn wasn't totally overgrown this morning as I looked out the kitchen window as the gloom turned to light - a deer grazing on the grass seeming to enjoy itself. Must have sensed me as he disappeared just as I was about to take a picture. Now that the grass has been mowed will it resort to the veggies? An interesting routing for our return trip: The Atlantic leg was AMS to BDL, a very nice and convenient flight which is on the verge of being cancelled due to the higher fuel costs (so they say, even though it was full both ways). As we were descending for landing, we took a route along the CT river, right over a small community of Sunderland where a very mossy patch was happily enjoying the wet summer. The route also took us directly over W. Simsbury and our overgrown estate.
