Oh what a beautiful day! Delightful fall weather. Glad I got out yesterday as I have been watching it from this desk. Like being at work again. Spent the day filling in applications, signing leases, and all sorts of paperwork. Ugh!!! And more to do. Got so bad that I needed some sounds. Don't normally have any and silence works just fine. But this was really annoying stuff. So got back into Pandora and set up a Beatles channel. Been great - sounds of another day, sound as fresh as they did then. Nice mix of all sorts of crazy stuff - Hendrix, Doors, Stones and on and on.

May have to get away. Think I've signed everything I can for now. Maybe can squeeze in a run or at least some outdoors.

Just too nice to be shut in. So out into the yard. First thing noticeable is the birds - suddenly last week they arrived! They checked out the feeders, empty for the summer. Lyn rushed off to buy more seed and as soon as a small bit (bears remember! Only small portions at a time.) was put in the feeders, the birds came from all over. Great fun to see them back: titmouses, nuthatches, chickadees, cardinals, blue jays, Carolina wren. From none to inundated, fun as it was really quiet lately. We wondered if they had totally left us.

Then raked and sucked the next round of leaves, only small sections of the poplars. Lots more to come. The wonderful fall colors of New England. Something everyone should experience up close and personal - and we have another rake if you really want up close.
Stretching 20:00 [0]
Late evening - logging first, now I'll have to get my butt off the couch.

Event: WCOC DuO #3, Huntington

Huntington Du-O - Control Pickup - 65, clear sunny bright day. Perfect day to be in the woods and these are about the most perfect woods going. Picked up in the N half of the map, a really nice section.

Had really good O going, nailing the controls. Amazing what can be done if you spend time planning a route and then go at a pace that you can follow it, pick off good attackpoints and all. Maybe should try this more often. Didn't even manage to get lost in any swamps.

Did run through a swamp at the end to try to muddy/wetten up the shoes. They continue to bother. Were going really well, nice grip and all, but the R heel started to develop the old hot spot when climbing. Got them good and muddy and will have to try to soften that corner. Have replace the original inner sole with a thinner one from some Salomons which helped but guess not enough.

Cycling (Road) 1:00:00 [1] 13.0 mi (4:36 / mi)
weight:145lbs
Simsbury Ride - 62, clear, bright sunny day. Leaves just starting to turn so all is really beautiful and a delight to be out riding.
Rode to do a couple chores. First to the library via W Simsb to drop off a slightly overdue book, Black and White and Dead all over, which was due yesterday. Tried to renew but there was a hold, so finished last night. Rather fun story about the screwed up newspaper business, esp since we are seeing our local paper being torn to shreds and really screwed up.
Then to the bank ATM for a ride-through, fun fumbling for my card straddling my bike. (Full disclosure, tried it yesterday but couldn't remember the PIN. It's a new account that I haven't used before except to transfer money for O-ringen.)
Then home via River Rd. Delightfully tranquil. The Farmington R seems totally rural, with views of the changing leaves reflected in the waters. A HS 8 was out practicing, day off for long w.e. Really pretty ride. Quite gentle as not much in the legs and Lyn is still suffering.

Thursday Oct 9

Trail run long 1:00:00 [1]
weight:144lbs shoes: Mizuno Inspire
Horse - Purple - Spring Pond - 70, clear day but humid.

Not a very spunky effort. The hills yesterday seemed harmless and didn't even feel tired last night, but as soon as we started, ugh - the legs weren't so sure. Didn't plan to do much of an effort anyway, just and easy loop, as the cold is lingering a bit with a slight cough and funny chest. And Lyn felt awful. She'd had a good run yesterday but had real trouble today - worst run ever. Was walking after several run bits. The head cold and cough have definitely got her. And it seems to shrink the lungs, making it hard to get a breath.

Can't remember if we have had a cold in modern history. It's been a long time, so this isn't fun.

Wednesday Oct 8

Note
On a nice bright October day, it appears that the light approaching isn't that proverbial freight train but another fair and pleasant day on the other side of this obstruction we have been dealing with. The facility we have been focused on has immediate an opening of a nice unit. Now it's the formality of the paperwork and arranging finances, moving etc, none of which will be without its own stress but definitely manageable. Then just the minor issue of getting her to stay there.

Trail run warm up/down 28:00 [1]
weight:145lbs shoes: Mudclaw O
WH Reservoir - 60, clear, bright shiny day.
20' before jogging around trail to SW of parking, stretching, strides.
8' after on a loop along trails above parking area.

Still using old parking area. New area is prepared but needs paving. Looks good. But they have put up a big nasty fence all around the water works - part of the 'Shrubs' terrorist network?

Reservoirs - After that good news, decided to enjoy the nice day, if hill repeats can possibly be considered for enjoyment. But compared to the other issue, it's a piece of cake.

Plan was for 10 x 30" / 60" rcy. Started at the beginning of the cross country race course, a reasonable gradual incline, but it ran out just before the 30". So tried the first bit after the sharp corner turn. Again a little too gradual and short. The section just after the next bend worked: more than long enough (might get another 15" on it.) with uneven gravel on much of it for working the footing. Was able to do the full 10, doing the same distance up for all the last 8. So felt pretty good about that. Could probably do a few more, but no sense in over doing it.

And it really was a very nice day.

Tuesday Oct 7

Stretching 20:00 [0]
Late stretch - during the "debate" or actually the "chat around the other guy" session. Then watched talking heads for a while as they spewed out nonsense and finally settled on Leno, for the real story. Altho Keith Olberman (?) did seem to make some sense, though also seemed just a little biased.

Monday Oct 6

Water 10:00 [1]
weight:145lbs
Y - Laps: 12 I think. 8 crawl; 4 breast. That was enough. Why do I have the feeling the water doesn't like me and tries to win?
Stretching 20:00 [0]
Afternoon - during quiet time.
