A very intimidating scenario for today. Firstly the 500m, 110 m climb to the start in very cold conditions. Long first leg across vague terrain but managed it fairly well. #2 pulled up early (in loads of rock pagodas) but got onto a train who thought they knew where they were going. They didn't but I did find the control before some. I was rather disappointed that I had passed by it (between 2 rock faces 4m high - but weren't they all?) but the control was very neatly placed behind a tree. Then a scary section with a sheer rock face of I guess 100m if I continued to take the lower route to #3, so climbed back up and went over the top of the bare rock to find the shallow gully. #4 I visited via another termite mound and was perfectly on line just way too high. #5 fine #6 going along with RP and it felt way too far but the terrain looked right. Found it in "stuff". Around, up and over then contour to #7 - good work there. Stumbled along trying to contour to #8 and ended up being a bit slow, but I was accurate. Over to #9, a bit wayward but again control was in "stuff". Longish vague leg to #10 but collected dam on way so spot on. By this time my right shoe was feeling a bit funny. About half way to #11 the sole was really flapping so I removed it. But I lost concentration and wandered around for a few minutes. Then motors revved up along the track to peel off to the gully for #12. #13, #14 and Finish all pretty ordinary and compared with the other controls pretty bland.
Strangely I felt more pleased with this course than yesterday's. My only disappointment was that 2 controls were behind trees and 3 were eg 0.7m termite mound in grass that was mostly over 1m in height.
Then the 500m walk back from the remote finish was a chance to cool down in the wind. I didn't mind this but with the nuh control sites in the end of the course they could well have ended up closer. So by the end my feet were really suffering, especially with a lot less cushioning on my right foot.
Grahame D did a good job with our course, I thought. A goodly amount of challenge with a little bit of respite.
