gym class (Cross Fit Training) 1:00:00 [4]

Outstanding class - right on the mark for intensity, variety and duration. Interestingly today was to focus on biceps and triceps with cardio in between. But then Cory threw in some floor work - this was as a result of a conversation I'd had with her 2 weeks ago about DOMS and muscles not often tested. She sure made up for that today. Absolutely astounded that I could make it through with side leg raises - 1 min then 1 min figure 8, plank in the middle then inner side leg raises and figure 3s - she said we could chose our own number!!!. I am anticipating some soreness tomorrow. That'll be a good thing and I'm prepared. running got stronger each time - pleased with that and HR got from 90 to 140 by end of class. Wish I could transfer some of those numbers over to other times of the day.
L knee a bit sore from yesterday - just general usage.

exploring 1:30:00 [1]

Field checking Brickworks Park and control site selection/vetting. Beautiful day and pleasing to see the park being used by locals.

Event (Fairley Dams) 2:18:09 [3]

Hadn't realised this was Fairley Dams - I'm renaming it Fairley Downs. What a shocker - never ever done anything like this before!
Rob B set a great course and I was really looking forward to it. He's new to the club and I was relishing a different style of course setting to challenge me. And it sure did. I chose the short Hard today as I wanted to get home by 1:30 and it was a Minor/training event so no need to do extra. But extra I did!!! I intend to document the whole sorry saga for posterity and reflection later on! including time elapsed.
S-1 (5:02) along taped track going through some beautiful rainforesty stuff in convoluted w/c system. Thanks for that! Felt about right for distance but didn't see flag so went past and picked up the sharp w/c bend and backtracked about 20m and da da #1. all good.
1-2 (2:12)easily see mound and onto top - needlessly as control at base S side but that's OK - my mistake.
2-3( 9:12) follow taped route to open and track, use junction to take bearing; try to pick vegetation but seem to be drifting... and i was. Found a flag, thought it strange and it was - but at least it was #13, so relocated and found #3. All good thus far.
3-4 (39:11)bearing to major track and come out just before the tangle of tracks. Here's where it all started to unravel. Could see clearing but really thought I was not taking the track beside it - thought it was through - it wasn't. Kept looking for the fence but as I was on the WRONG track then it's hardly going to be on my right!!! continued on, still looking for fence and enjoyed quite a nice little wandered along track making things fit until I come to a fence/w/c and the contours didn't match what I could see. I retraced my steps and noted a little clearing with a control - obviously an Easy control and so back to the junction where I'd started. Confirmed with all the spaghetti tracks there that I was going the 'right' way and so again down but not as far this time. Caught sight of someone I guessed was doing the same course and (here I'll use a female elite from WOC's statement - "I used her as a reference") followed for a little while - 100m or so and decided she was on her way to #6 and by now the penny had dropped as to being on the wrong track. Back to different intersection and I saw a train of people exiting the forest and taking different routes to #6 - so in I went looking for this damn fence. Still not finding it but drew near a track and found some stray barbed wire which comprised the fence i was searching for. Followed it the right way and finally found #4.
4-5 (1:01)short leg, still easily missed control.
5-6 (11:48) took nice route with little use of cross tracks, up spur, cut across when picked up rock and around hill but not finding flag. Saw someone else exiting across deep gully so decided to go on, knowing I'd probably get #11 and work my way back. Not the brightest choice but little else with steep sided slope and lots of rock to obscure flags. A bit disappointed about some bits of this.
6-7 (8:27) starting to get a bit tired at this stage and foot hurting, but that's just my shoes. Up slope and found control. Clare came into it - she was relieved too.
7-8 (2:58) Up and over top - saw Moose here - nice smile - control easy.
8-9 (3:09) contoured around - did this well but slowly - very steep and not many goats had left a trail for me.
9-10 (6:45) had a few problems with this - felt I'd picked the right level but must have missed the flag and the base of the rockface and went past. So good to be right - just wished I hadn't spent a lot of energy clambering.
10-11 (didn't get there) over the top and as I'd been to #11 before thought I was going OK but found myself running out of rock and by this stage I was considering my options about getting back in time. So when i missed #11 I decided I'd blow it and pick some others up on the way back.
10-12 (actually 10:30) down the hill via the major track and as #12 was just beside track I popped in and got it.
12-13 Well I decided I wasn't going to have enough time to do the second grouping in the w/c maze so my target was to work out what on earth I'd done trying to get to #4 - in reverse. So out to E-W track to the barbed wire fence/w/c I'd seen and it confirmed what I had thought - something a little dodgy with map there as far as distance went - but I had been in entirely the wrong spot. Sorted that out and by now I had 20 mins to get back before course closure and as it is Fathers Day i really didn't want to delay people unnecessarily. Decided to skip #13 and reward myself by retracing the marked path that started the course ie track - #2-#1. Walked along track and noted 1 minor track, second track was mine (had a minor track on other side to confirm) but couldn't pick up streamers. Kept thinking they would appear so got more and more entrenched in rainforesty bits. Got to creek at a point where I couldn't cross. Tried a little further along, still no go but found 2 tree trunks straddling the creek. Tried to go back out to track and come in again hoping to catch sight of streamers - but no luck. Back in again and look for narrow part to cross and I came out at exactly the same trees!!!!! How can this be? I could hear the expressway roaring and was concerned I was too close - but by now it was 1:00 and I had to finish NOW. So I crawled across the trunks - pretty slippery but hugged them pretty tight. Knew to just go N but came across a barbed wire fence - gah OOB OK I know where I am now - abandoned car so road must be close - struggled through the very thick green until finally found a little clearing but wanted road!! Thank you very much. Finally came out at feeder road and saw people and cars - so didn't even bother trotting in.
So 12-F (37:45). Had my suspicions that the streamers had been brought in and was a bit disappointed at that - but I was told they hadn't been. What had happened was I'd overshot and got 2nd track which ran slap bang into the jungle Bugger!

So out of all this - all the problems started with not being absolutely sure about which track i was taking at the spaghetti junction and refusing to contemplate that I could have been on the next track network over.
Disappointed to not do all of Rob's course. Surprised I didn't get flustered, though I think that is because I knew it was a training day... and training it was!!!
Very physical and a bit scary at times, and that was when I was on good nav.
Courses were very challenging = SL standard. Well done for that.

Note

And I am vindicated!!! rockman has shown me aerials overlain with map for last Sunday's event and my suspicions about proximity of tracks and powerlines and alignment were correct. However we couldn't resolve my extra track en route to #2. Win some, lose some... or don't find the evidence.

gym class (Body Sculpt) 58:00 [4]

Says Body Sculpt but in reality it is Cross Trainer. No matter, it is an exceptional class. Good to see the actual instructor (who is on bub leave for another couple of months) in the class and struggling with some sections. Gives us all hope!

Morning visit to Cardiff HS to case the joint. Fantastic prospects (for our club - future Sprint site??) plus putting program through.

walking 48:00 [1]

Princess Day - got fitted for my crown.
No point in having a strategy of shopping local if you then drive to the local. So walkies to dentist, then butcher then pharmacy then home. Beaut day and lovely temperature. Thinking about where to plant what in new garden area.
