Noahs Ark Ridge NSW Middle Distance Champs. Interesting terrain, but fairly unforgiving if you didn't keep map contact, which I did until late in the piece. Didn't read lines of rock and misinterpreted one minor for a major.
S-1 Picked up map and didn't think to orientate it to N so failed to find the track I was expected to find at Start triangle. Sorted that out then took off below rock and green and on edge of yellow. Went in a little early but soon decided control wasn't mine and went on a little further.
1-2 Good leg - bearing across spur to earth bank - saw lots of others milling around E-W when we wanted a N-S - was surprised to see this.
2-3 bearing around dam - control flag in wrong place - but on sufficiently close feature to be OK - but not right (hey look at me!!!, being critical).
3-4 Such a stupid mistake. Knew I needed a fence crossing so went for it - trouble was it was on a different fence - along the nearby fence and through gate, but actually had to cross this fence to get to next fence to use that crossing. It didn't take much to right the ship but sill mistake. Rest of leg was skirting rock and picking correct boulder - good work here
4-5 Down to edge of rock and used log pile to go up into rock again
5-6 I got the wobbles here, allowing myself to be distracted. Intended to go to nose of spur, find rock face and then boulder behind it, but wasn't into the rock far enough and found nothing, but saw other more switched on people going further over - bit rattled here.
6-7 Down to log pile
7-8 Then it all went haywire!!! Along rock, looking for a "saddle" situation rather than do extra climb. Others kept going further S. I went over the top and into a reasonable cleared section with a lovely looking line of rock. Had a pokey around and found nothing interesting except for the puzzled looks on others. Looked further to E and the seductive looking rocks that needed to be climbed over and YAY a lovely cleared section, much better than previous. And yes it was looking good... except not good enough to have a flag and an appropriate number. Same and more people looking puzzled. Sensible people seemed to be going even further E so .... Ended up rescuing the leg by relocating from fence junction and drinks station one ridge of rock too far E. Pleased I didn't panic but around 10 min mistake wasn't ideal. But there were a LOT of people bumbling around in that area. I really liked the clearing with the line of rock - I liked it sooo much I kept wanting to see it from different angles.
8-9 was a doddle then
9-F Down hill, stumbling on straw bale stile.
It seems I had enough of a (strong) lead to allow around a 10 minute mistake, but still came away with the win by around 45 seconds. Lucky, but I had banked some time previously.
