Orienteering (ski) 46:00 [3] *** 6.0 km (7:40 / km)

An orienteering misadventure - logging it as a form of therapy :-) Drove up to Beaver Brook Farm in Vt this am but felt mentally tired- warmed up OK. Set off in right direction for 1 and 2, then headed for 12 instead of 3! Problem seemed to be focal plane for my regular O bifocals with the position of the map holder - hard to focus. Course corrected to 3 via a dotted trail and headed to 4- realized I'd lost my thumb compass. Why I chose to wear one over a ski glove is beyond me- anyhow backtracked to see if i could find it- no such luck, then headed to 5 - only it was 6! At that point realized my head "wasn't in it", so bailed and went back to look for thumbie one more time. Again no luck, headed in to a DNF before insanity prevailed. Oh well - kinda laughed it off and decided to head for home as no accommodation had been secured (all in all a last minute thing which I will put down to work overload last week). There is a moral to this story which hopefully I will register for future reference.
Upside: drive back through Franconia was pleasant and sunny and I got home in one piece.

Had to find a way to make this interesting- so here is the Railroad series of workouts starting with the Pennsy Centipede 2-4-4-2 wheelset, A and B diesel units coupled back to back storming around Horseshoe Curve @90 mph. So 3 mins each at 2-4-4-2-6-2-4-4-2-6% (uphill finish) at 9min/mile or better. Kept me amused me while I watched Thomas the tank engine :-)

Note

Original POA (Gunstock Ski-O) got scuppered- we slept in- and on checking event details looked like a narrow start window which we weren't going to make. So Plan B was Ski followed by O: Mt Weston then Hammond Pond- the later courtesy of CSU and thanks to Jeff S. Nice day out especially as my Non Orienteering Spouse (remind me to commission the NOSOS chapter- aka Non-Orienteering Significant Other Society) got to enjoy Chestnut Hill Mall- and fortunately showed admirable restraint.
11 AM

XC ski (skate) 40:33 intensity: (15:00 @3) + (25:33 @4) 10.0 km (4:03 / km)
ahr:144 max:159

Mt Weston 4 loops - nice sunny day
12 PM

Orienteering (Hammond Pond) 52:29 intensity: (25:00 @3) + (27:29 @4) *** 7.0 km (7:30 / km)
spiked:18/22c

Nice 6.1k course set by Ross- my thanks to CSU. Hammond Pond is still relatively fresh for me and course took advantage of some nice legs. A few bobbles including a couple of times standing right next to the streamer before registering it! Couldn't reset my Garmin between ski and O but splits captured OK. Was feeling a bit tired and hungry by end.
4 PM

Walking 27:00 [2] 1.5 mi (18:00 / mi)

Quick doggie outing
