Race morning Warm Up.

Hit some trails, some road. Just cruised around mostly with some good pickups. Starting to warm up a bit towards race time. Pretty good timing this time warm up to start gate although I got in the back, doesnt matter, the blowup fest is sure to ensue front line or in the back.

RACE!

Awesome day for racing. Pretty much had some low expectations going into the race, havent done an interval or speed training at all since nov 09. I told Sarah yesterday afternoon that I was really looking forward to racing though. Got up, some oatmeal, coffee, and hit the road solo.

Warmed up, and hit the line in the back of the 20-24/25-29/SS class. Moved up to the middle pack in the first mile before the hikeabike, brutal. HR was skyrocketing the whole first lap. Held my own and just pushed it, knowing there is some spots to "recover" on this course. But the bike did well, loved the FS for this course, although I did have some shifting issues (spent 2 frustrating hours in it last night and got it "doable" to race on...)

By the end of the second lap I was finding my pace, and feeling good. I meant to get all my splits but after the first lap I didnt remember to hit the thing to maybe 1-2 mins later....not a big deal. I definitely didnt negative split or anything but I felt I held it together alot better than an xc race ive done before. Third lap still feeling good and having room to nail the descents and nobody all up on my business everywhere, was a good thing. Knew getting over my 4th hike a bike section on the last lap would mark my end of extreme pain, but still kept pushing, over tech and flat sections, everything.

Felt like I have marked improvement for myself compared to last year, cat 2 race at bonelli. Racing in Cat 1 is really good for me, and I like knowing im racing the fastest guys, testing. More racing, more miles, its only going to get easier to be faster, just have to stick to it, hitting it hard like I am. Then I will get to that podium, its gonna happen, maybe not this year or next but it will. Still new to this "real" volume and training, still loving it more each day too...

ended up 7th/11 in my age category, couldnt be happier with that with where Im at right now.

My avg HR was 173, pretty gnarly for 2 hrs of racing for me, and max 188 is most ive had in a LONG time probably, if ever. Good to note those for me for future reference, glad I didnt forget my strap like I usually do half the time.

Was feeling a little sluggish today, Had a couple too many beers/drinks last night but what the hell it was my bday. Awesome dinner and def too many cupcakes...

Got out on the road planning on 2 hours but didnt get it. Wasn't feeling the best and knew I should just get back to rest, not to mention it was super windy, dusty, and dry w/ gnarly santa ana winds picking up. Dust clouds blowing down my street as I pulled in. Even if I was feeling good I would have cut this one short!

Looking forward to relaxing today and maybe cleaning/tuning the bikes up. Watching athlete tracker for cali70.3 this morning pulling for b.walsh, and the SLAMO train!

Note

Coffee, oatmeal, sprouted wheat bagel and some 53x11 coffee. What a Friday morning. Headed out to Fontana w/Jameson in a little while. For now just chillin.

Cycling (Mountain) 2:02:37 [3] 18.26 mi (8.9 mph) +1990ft

ac -74.1

Hit the fontana course with james this morning. Wasnt feeling the first loop at all. The course is definitely NOT suited for my strengths, loose and hikeabikes and diff tech stuff. I know I am good at the stuff, tech stuff, but took my the full three laps we did to get warmed into it and like it. After the third lap I was stoked, finally feeling good on the course. Shoot, Im learning, course recon isnt a good idea, its necessary. If I went out there race morn, not pre rode, and did a warm up lap on the course like I usually do I woulda been bummed.

Looking forward to racing, no pressure on myself as I have little expectations as far as result, but want to race THE COURSE, Not worry about racing against anyone, just put my best into it. Good course to test myself and push myself against what I normally wouldnt feel was my best. But thats how I'll get to be better, the only way.

Pretty rad to shoot around the course on a friday when Im usually at work too, and see some pros (gary fisher team) rolling out as we finished up was pretty cool.

So stoked on my bday dinner tonight, went all out. awesome Ribeyes (way more expensive when you buy grass fed no hormone stuff), salmon filets, and bunch of fresh scallops. And plenty of makers and beers to go around. An expensive night of food and beers but what the hell! Cheers APers!

Cycling (Road) 1:17:16 [3] 24.1 mi (18.7 mph) +160ft

ac - 87rpm

Legs coming around even though I ate like hell last night for dinner, if you can even call it that, for my moms birthday. Barely any calories, none really good, some drinks, and birthday cake. Stomach wasnt feeling the best this AM obviously, and I wasn't too motivated to get out of bed and ride in the dark.

Sucked it up and got out there. Legs recovering although quads still lacking any real power, beat. A day with some really good foods planned and some core work later should kick me back in rhythm.

Weary this AM, didnt wanna get outta bed this morning. Solo 530am mission. Powered by the plinys last night and some awesome food, and some ice cream from znows too....I needed to get out on the bike.

Legs still tired for sure, but slowly progressing and feeling better. Good am ride.

Cycling (Road) 1:15:53 [3] 24.03 mi (19.0 mph) +170ft

ac - 85rpm

up early in the dark, vq style, riding at 530am. Legs lacked anything today. Stuck on my dads wheel the whole ride, a minor sufferfest for a short ride. Felt like a solid group ride on my legs right now. Dont know if Ill be riding this afternoon, though I want to, because maybe I wont get a chance to ride tommorow. Focusing on recovery. These next two months I will be racing alot and will be racing into the season shape, as much as training into it. Keeping it simple and basic, race-recover-train a bit-race-recover...etc.

Gonna hit beachwoodbbq for dinner and beers tonight with Sarah, ive been excited for this for days!

Note

Got almost 11 hrs sleep sat night, nailed recovery, lots of beers and tacos last night, and probably 8.5hrs sleep last night. Lots of work to get done today in the office, then another short really easy spin, and washing my truck. Then hitting a double day tommorow hopefully. Legs feel better than yesterday, spinning and beers always helps.

Cycling (Road) 1:22:54 [3] 25.22 mi (18.3 mph) +326ft

AC - 88rpm

Got in an afternoon spin after work, pushed the pace a little bit more than yesterday, only cause I had to with a strong headwind to start the first 20 mins and last 15 mins or so. Was a solid ride, saw clancy, legs felt good just tried to keep a real high cadence. Followed that up by hurrying over to my parents house to wash my truck, windex all windows, wax roof and hood....spotless. Then had some scallop/baco/avo tacos there with some red wine, and then just took down some eggs and pots at home. Now chillin with an Alesmith IPA and relaxing. Bedtime soon.
