Finaly I found time ...

The whole Jukola thing was very exciting and there can be only one first time experience. It's really something to see all these people around, competitors and just family/club members. Enormous organizational efforts.

Anyway, several of us spent few days in Finland and we did training on multiple maps and we could guess that orienteering in finish terrain is completely different - a lot of rock features and details.

Probably 1st leg is the most exciting one when over thousand runners are heading into the woods sprinting for the first 200-300m before disappearing in the forest. Long term injury forced me to lower amount of training in recent month, but I still was in reasonably good running shape dispute bad knee. Because of that I didn't expect fast running, plus navigation was much harder than we used to. So, running slower was sort of advantage to prevent costly mistakes and errors. Before the start Greg Balter asked me "Are You nervous?". And I told him "No". And that was absolute true, I was surprisingly calm and ready for something I could experience only once - 1st leg in my first Jukola relay!

Our team #412 positioned me in the first half of runners but unfortunately I was in the middle of that mass. Just after the start I noticed how fast both sides are moving and middle is much slower. First time glanced at map after 50-100m and decided run on the road even it wasn't close to the straight line. There were a lot of others running same direction but different first control. Ended up running alone; but I knew what direction to go and what to look for. About 30-50m before the control I could tell I'm close enough to the control cause there were bunch of people punching and standing nearby (so called lost souls). Checked code, it was mine and punched my first Jukola checkpoint. Second leg on my course was the longest one, almost 2km. There were probably 50 people around me running in several "trains" similar direction. Checked my compass every minute or maybe every 30 sec. Getting closer to #2 I hit another control, which I thought was mine but code didn't match. Stopped only to check code and read the map. And I wasn't alone, others had exactly the same dilema. Kept going along marshy area and finaly reached my control. Didn't have problem with #3. Followed crowd to #4, #5 (TV control), #6, #7, and #8. There were almost no alternative or any chances to run faster, just stayed in the train. Near #9 lost another minute or so. There was one more control which I hit first, checked code, looked at map and at that point I wasn't sure where I was, but knew I'm really close (actually I already was in the circle). Saw some people coming from another reentrant and I sensed my control is over there. Headed in that direction and wasn't surprised to see white-orange flag, checked code and punched it. Lost a little bit time near #10, probably around minute at #12. Still, there were a lot of runners around me and some of them were doing same forking. Major time lost was around #14 approaching ski slope. There were six controls in vicinity and I found two extra before finding mine. Lost 2-3 minute cause I had to stop, look around, read map, ... Still, I got lucky. Next several controls were very simple and easy to find. Joined another group (about 10-12 runners) on the way to #20 and #21. And now there was #22. Very tricky control. It looks like I got lucky one more time. On that leg our group separated and now I could see only 3-4 guys around me. And at one point everyone just stopped running! No one knew exactly where they were :) Checked my compass and kept going (telling myself to trust compass). And the next flag was mine. So, two more controls to go and only 2-3 guys around me. Slowed down checking direction with compass every 15 sec. Even that didn't prevent from small bubble. Fortunately there were more runners punching that control and visibility was good enough to see them leaving checkpoint. Turned left and ran 20m toward control, checked code and punched it. One more control, I'm almost there. Didn't look at map, just read what is the code for last control - 100. From the book we got I remembered my last control is tthe middle one, so, I ran general direction downhill toward field and finish area. Reached middle control (there were 3 different GO controls) and was surprised to see wrong code - 222. Looked at map, mine is 100. Then realized everyone was going to other control so did I. Passed couple guys in the finish shut. The most exciting was to run these last hundreds of meters and hear announcer saying "Vadim Masalkov, USA"! Dropped my map, ran toward exchange area, officials directed me to the right spot, grabbed the map, and gave it to Chris. Went to download station and was glad to hear I'm clean. It's over, I'm done. Tired but happy!!!

Met with Karl, Greg, and Sandy. It was first map running for them in Finland.

Did plan to do whole course, but everything worked out well. Was more careful and slow which helped to read map and terrain. Messed up couple controls but not too bad.

After watching World Cup Sprint qualification drove to one of the closest training map in Lapua.

Had a big problem with #2: relocated 3 times to get that control, almost gave up, but decided to find it at any cost. The main problem was by following trail and missing right turn when it was forking to distinct and less distinct trails (which in reality was opposite what map shows). Split was about 36 min. instead of some 7-10 min. Then rest of the course was better, but still had some problems near control circles. Also skipped one control due to lack of time.

Second training at Isoluoma map adjacent to actual Jukola 2007 map (same hill side but accross the road). Did some random running picking up some close controls. Noticed some compass problems in few places mostly next to rock features.

Easy run. There is no improvement with my left knee since I started PT and stretching. At least right one seems to be fine. It's time to start real tapering, one more run will scheduled for Thursday and then flight to Europe.

VF Mt. Joy - ran perimeter from visitor center to MT.Misery and back through the middle on the trail. Tested my new VJ Integrator shoes to make sure I'm not going to have blisters running Jukola. Knees felt similar to what was a month ago, didn't get better or worse.
