Orienteering race (Classic) 1:24:09 [4] ***** 11.9 km (7:04 / km) +150m 6:39 / km
ahr:163 max:172 spiked:16/20c shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315
NA Champs, Classic distance, RedY (M35+).
Official distance 8.9km.

One bigger mistake of about 6min. at #17.

I knew it would be hard to run because of lack of training and some light discomfort in left knee. Started Okay, but missed #2, simple control, but I didn't check compass on time and drifted left. Lost about 30-45 sec. At that point I saw Andras already going to #3 (he started one minute in front and missed #1). I got him at #3 and since then we run close to each other till #10 where I managed to pull away and never saw him again. Leg 3-4 we run almost straight line, but I believe road/trail choice was a winning for runners. Leg 4-5-6-7 almost straight, reading terrain and going around some marshy areas. 15sec. lost at #7 - could not see flag. Leg 7-8 up to the trail throught water stop, then on the road and right over the hill, drifted right and hit wrong control (GreenY) but it took only 5 sec. to make correction. Leg 8-9-10 almost straight. Leg 10-11 a little bit left off of straight line to cross marsh, then over the hill through the saddle and up again into reentrant. Leg 11-12 up to the trail and then staright, stopped several times to read map plus it tool 10-15 sec. to see the flag (had to read clue). Leg 12-13 to the road, stayed on the road a bit longer, then left into woods crossing marsh and right along the hill side. Leg 13-14 strayed righter then left into reentrant. Leg 14-15 - longer one, at that point I caught Nadim and Mark C. and we run close to each other for awhile. Tried to stay next to the marshy area but in the woods. Then crossed another marsh and almost messed up, but looked at map in time for left turn and up the hill to the control. Leg 15-16 decided to go left off of straight line and get some water (could not see that there were multiple water points). Lost 15 sec. near control. Nadim was here as well but he ran slower. Leg 16-17 - plan was to go through #3 and then bearing into control - unfortunately I missed #3 and then run going left and right looking for bigger reentrant. I was so close, but could not recognize actual location when I founf wrong control (GrennY again). Turned around, went left (instead of right), then right, then straight, then ... who knows ... and found #3. After that it went the way I originally planned w/out problem. Last 3 controls a bit slower, just to make sure no more mistakes.

Decent run except one control.

Out of shape, left knee started bother me somewhere around #12, also my back hurted a bit due to lack of training.

Orienteering race (Middle) 41:34 [4] ***** 5.98 km (6:57 / km) +123m 6:18 / km
ahr:170 max:179 spiked:16/16c shoes: Inov8 RocLite 315
NA Champs, Middle distance, RedY (M35+).
Official distance 5.3km.

Well, it was a big surprise for me winning RedY course. Perhaps it was a combination of slower running speed and less amount of mistakes I made. Basically, it was close to clean run, only few small bubbles here and there.

Start-1-2 was as simple as it looked. Stayed high on the way to #3 and then straight line over the saddle. Leg 3-4 went straight line over the hill, crossed road next to the swamp and staright to the control. Leg 4-5 over the hill and along marshy area to the trail. Leg 5-6 back to the road, then trail, turned left too early but catch my mistake on time to adjust route. Leg 6-7 almost straight again staying next to open field. Leg 7-8 dropped down, run at the bottom of depression staying left and then up into control. Leg 8-9 staright through the green, slow but no issues. Leg 9-10 was close to make a mistake, looked at compass and adjusted direction. Lost about 30 sec. cause I managed to get off of my route and took some time to match terrain and map. Leg 10-11 straight staying higher on the hill side. Leg 11-12 staright to the bigger reentrant, then left to control. Leg 12-13 tried staright but stopped short. Lost another 15-20 sec. Leg 13-14 simple, but not optimal. Leg 14-15 over and down into reentrant, then right and staright left. Hesitation near control for about 10-15 sec., but then saw what I was looking for. Leg 15-16-Finish simple.

I would say not a bad run for a broken "old" man doing rogaines as training :)

Note
Ankles - swelling is almost gone, but both ankles (inner side above periosteum?) still hurt.
Knees - don't know yet, but at least they don't hurt too much.

Note
WRC8 results. 104 out of 336 teams.

Terrain was very flat and it was perfect for runners, but required a lot of good planning and precise navigation for others.

I'm looking forward for the next WRC, which will be in Europe again: Russia, Ukraine or Czech Republic. It was planned to be in Washington State, US, but park authorities decided it's to dangerous for us because of flying butterflies, kind of which is silly ...

Orienteering race (Rogaining) 8:00:14 [3] **** 33.5 km (14:20 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra
WRC8. Part II. (62 / 123).

Now I had my big lights which made navigation in the dark a little bit more comfortable. We made some major changes to our planned route cutting a lot of distance and controls. Unfortunately we made some mistakes and skipped several valuable controls which were kind of addition to the new sequence. Anyway, we could take 3 more controls with 19 point. But it's too late now.

Night felt really short. But there was one very difficult night control #73. We spent almost 90min. on that leg - first, we turned on the wrong trail (my fault) and lost about 10-15min.; second, the trail we walked on disappeared in the middle and we were surrounded by darkness and trashy woods (thanks to beavers activity, they made this area almost impossible to get through), but we made it through loosing a lot of valuable time and energy. The rest of second loop was Okay, probably few more small mistakes but nothing terrible.

We came back with 40min. to spare, very tired, ... but happy. We did it, it wasn't perfect, we learned some lessons, etc.

=================

Some other thoughts.
- I made it w/out blisters which is very good for wet conditions.
- It was chilly, but not too cold.
- We didn't have rain, perfect!
- It nice to have dedicated driver :)

Event: 8th World Rogaining Championships

Event: DVOA Training Weekend - Hickory Run

Orienteering race (Rogaining) 13:40:27 [3] **** 66.7 km (12:18 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006)
WRC8. Part I. (126 / 145).

WRC8. Part I. (126 / 145).

It was my 5th rogaine since first one in 2004 in Arizona at WRC6. I don't train for more than year now and my shape wasn't perfect for the flat terrain which suggested a lot of running. The weather was somehow almost perfect for such long activity, but it was a little bit too cold for me, not enough body fat ...

We arrived day before and stayed in the tent at event center. It was windy and cold and it was clear we'll need to make sure it's not going to be cold during event. I brought with me 3 sets of running clothing, which made possible to create 2 wormer sets - 3 layers on top plus light wind proof jacket and 2 layers at bottom. Underarmor T-shirts and other stuff worked perfectly, especially gloves.

In the morning we couldn't decide how many layers to wear or what T-shirts/pants, etc. It was cold if you just walk around the camp.

And now it was time to get our maps and start planning routes. As soon as I saw the map I knew it'll be wet, there was no choice to keep feet dry, just impossible. Also, because I wasn't planning to run it made difficult for me to design perfect routes with skipping a lot of controls here and there. Then even after having some routes, I started looking at possible way to get to each control, which created even more challenges - even if distance was the closest between controls, it was impossible to take them in that sequence. We designed, redesigned several times and finaly somehow made reasonable route with option to get back to the hash house for warm food and dry cloth.

Unfortunately we planned total distance of about 120+ km and w/out running on the roads/trails it was hard to get them all. We run here and there on some legs, but it was not enough. We skipped 2 controls during first loop and made some adjustments to the route because of getting low with our water resources. Also we made several bad choives and lost some time including couple of very frustrating ones like 15-20min. at night leaving control #81 in the dark forest and stucking in the marshy area.

It wasn't cold when we moved, but it was getting chilly as soon as we stoped or crossed open fields. Out feet were wet since going to the second control and we crossed few more marshies before we came back to the hash house almost 14 hours later. Yes, that was way too late, I planned to be in the camp at latest 11PM, but not 2AM.

But we had warm and real food. And we changed to the dry cloth as well. My brother already had issues with feet - blisters, nails, etc. So, we spent more than 90 min. at the hash house, perhaps it was necessary.

At that point it was clear we cannot stay with our original plan fopr the second loop - not enough time plus we were getting tired (no more running for me, my knee(s) could not handle that).
