DVOA A-meet, Day 1, FH- Little Egypt area.

Official distance - 12.64km, GPS - 14.63km.

Was at the start area just several minutes before my start time, which is not usual for me. But there were just enough time after I set sprint course flags and got ready for main course. Missed #2 by minute or so. Was in the area and in the right place, but approach direction didn't give good visibility angle and spent some time reading map and matching it to terrain. Then some time lost at #12. Again I was in right place, saw my cliff, but control was located so low I could not see it. Thougt it wasn't the right cliff, ran a bit forward, found another control, and immediately turned around toward first cliff. And from that direction I saw control. Everything else was clean with few hesitations in controls circles and probably couple not optimal route choices. Got tired by the end, used my GU too late.

This time it's white for real after Friday night snow storm :) Sunny, but windy. A lot of briars as usually.

Helped Tom at the start and then took off for my corse w/out any warmup. Not a good thing for my knee. Anyway, nice course by Tom, ran mostly close to the straight line with few exceptions. Missed only one control, but didn't lost too match time. Was stuck several times in briars bushes ...

DVOA Valley Goat III - Long edition.

Couple last weeks I didn't have a chance to train properly due to sickness and some work related circumstances. Left knee still hurts ...

Was pleased to see a lot of folks opted for the long version of VG like John F., Greg B., and others. After start glanced at my map, found first control, and headed into the woods leading pack for first hundred meters or so. There were John, Clem, Wyatt, and Greg A. Several first controls we were almost together. First real challenge was climb on the rocky and muddy hillside to the #5. Here I used all my fours and managed take a lead (probably my climbing was on more straight line than others). On the way to #7 John passed me on downhill, he was just flying while I was caution. Unfortunately control wasn't there and main pack got us and there was Sergei (it's really nice to see him running with us). Now Clem was leading us to #8. At maps exchange John got confused, Wyatt stopped for longer water break, and I took off toward #12. There were no reason to push harder, just kept cruising speed on the grassy field. Now we were three of us: Wyatt, John, and me. Clem was about 100m behind. For the next several controls we exchanged lead. Now I was together with John and Wyatt a little bit behind after he overshot one of controls. Water stop was quick and John took lead from there. I tried to stay with him, but he was faster than me. So, kept him in sight as long as possible and navigated by myself for a bit. That part of the course was on the rocky and hilly part of Mt.Misery map. My knee started hurting going up the hills on the way to #22 and after #24 I slowed down - at that point it was clear for me I can't catch John, my knee is hurting, and it makes no sense to push hard. So, tried to navigate with out major mistakes and keep moving toward finish.

Pleased with second place, 1:30 behind leader (John). Wyatt crossed finish line ~45sec. later taking third place.

Nice hard race overall. Pleasant weather.
Trail-Grass Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

Warming up is necessary part of any races for me since last december, at least 10-15 minutes until my knee feels better and don't hurt.

Tuesday Mar 6

Note
slept:7.0 weight:68.3kg
It's no longer fun. I spent another day with non-stop e-mails and phone calls (which I didn't answer on purpose, only few special people received help via phone). Probably I managed to handle more than 500 e-mails (it's a madness) in two business days, most of them related to permission/access settings and several with real problems or bugs. And then again couple hours work from home.

Always there is a hope tomorrow will be better day :)

Monday Mar 5

Note
slept:8.0 (sick)
That was day after upgrading software ... I didn't answer any phone calls and spent over 9hr in front of my desktop almost w/out breaks. Then I had few things to finish from home, another couple of hours. There were no time for training, plus cold from last week wasn't gone.

Sunday Mar 4

Trail-Grass Running 1:05:00 [2] **** 12.47 km (5:13 / km)
ahr:136 max:148 slept:10.0 weight:68kg (injured) (sick) shoes: Salomon XA Comp2 XCR

Saturday Mar 3

Hiking - Jogging (Course setting) 2:15:00 [1] ****
slept:8.0 weight:68.4kg (injured) (sick)
Batsto - field check. Felt a bit sick since yesterday morning, no running today, instead drove to the Batsto to field-check and streamer controls. There are few changes - they did another controlled burn and one more part of the map is more runnable than before; bikers are building new trail (it's premarked with pink streamers), which I suspect is going through all map (I plan to run on that trail tomorrow after I finish field-check and streamering).

Friday Mar 2

Event: BOK/US Team Umstead 007

Note
slept:6.5 (sick)
------------------------------
SW upgrade - Day 2.
------------------------------
Another 14hr non-stop work ... very tired by the end.

Thursday Mar 1

Trail-Grass Running 40:30 [3] 8.72 km (4:39 / km)
ahr:131 max:143 slept:6.0 weight:67.5kg (injured) shoes: Salomon XA Comp2 XCR
AM: Nice morning weather, ran faster than wanted, but it's the only way to get some training right now.
Note
------------------------------
SW upgrade - Day 1.
------------------------------
Planned scope of SW conversion at work went almost w/out problems except one minor issue with data which cost me about 2hr delay :( Came back home too late, plus another portion from last week has to be done before tomorrow morning and that part is causing a lot of problems.11hr of work ... Don't ask me why I hate "smart" users who thinks they know what they are doing ...
Note
The Ugly Mudder has frozen...
