CNYO Rogaine, Part 2. ================= After having meal, changing, taking care of blisters, resting for 15-20min., and getting our big light we went out for our redesigned night route. Greg made some fine adjustments and it looked really nice and logical. So, only one control wasn't included in our plan. Here is our night loop: S-45-58-20(W)-43-55-68-35-26-63-10(W, last water stop)-36-50-30-22-32-40-13-41-21-56-52-46-23-27-69(again)-48-42-48-F. We started just several minutes after 1:00AM and first few controls were roads walking. It was simple, but we managed to miss one of the turns at night on the way to #43. And we had huge climb toward #55, but it was on the road which made it pleasant. If I remember correctly, rain started somewhere on the leg to #55 and lasted for awhile and it was over after we visited #35. #26 was the last night control. We spent some time searching for #35, it was difficult one. Also, we almost went opposite direction leaving #55, but caught error on time. We rested for 10min. at #10, ate another clif bar. Rest of the course went pretty well, we lost time here and there, but no major issues. I didn't feel well, both legs were cramping, plus blisters started bother me and after #46 I had to take emergency stop for 5-10min. and take care ofmy both feet bottoms. And I really slowed down ... but still was moving. We lost another 20min. searching for the magic #69. No luck again. And we had about 90min. for last 3 controls. I could feel finish was close and I put in some last efforts to keep up with Greg, who was still doing fine navigation. We didn't have any problems and finished with about 30min. to spare. I'm glad I did it. It definitely was hard, perhaps the hardest rogaine for me. It was good experience. And I know what to expect in September ...

CNYO Rogaine, Part 1. ================= This was a crazy idea from the beginning when I decided to try 24hr Rogaine as a test-run before upcoming big event later in September. There is no simple answer why one does it. Probably because we need some adrenalin ... I knew it's going to be tought, really tought. All my training started couple of month ago (if I can call it training) and included orienteering on weekends only. Is it enough for rogaine?! All gear was ready, tested, and packed by late Thursday night and we drove up to Binghampton, NY night before, spent night in the motel, and had our breakfast at McDonalds. You know that you can eat a lot of junk before rogaine:), but we had pancakes, which is safe. We arrived on time as it was planned and had a little bit less than 2hr to get ready, which was just enough with few minutes to spare. Then there was a meeting at 11:00 and maps distribution 15min. later. So, we had about 45min. to design our day-night routes. As it was expected, map and controls placements were more technical than "normal" rogaine. Greg designed our route for the first part and quick measument showed over 40km distance to cover with more than half controls to visit. The plan was to clean up controls south from hash-house covering most spread out controls and wooded areas during day time. There were several adjustments and changes, but here is the final route: S-18-28-75-24-44-64-49-67-17(W)-33-34-54-37-29-74-16(W)-62-38-71-57-19-15-59-39-31(W)-72-65(Dark)-60-66-70-25-69-27-23-S. We didn't find #25, which was along the road, but was misplaced more than 200m; could not find #69 even we were in the right place (but who knows); and after 2 bad controls we skipped 27-23 and went straigh back to hash-house to have meal, change, take big lights, etc. As we were not ready by noon, we sarted several minutes later, which does not affect overall time. Better to have good plan. Again, Greg was doing all navigation and I was just straggling behind and making some noise ... along with route adjustments when it was necessary. We jogged several times, but it was so little. Unfortunately my current shape and knees issues don't allow me run without focusing that something is NOT rght. I could feel every step because of the knee. Anyway, we walked and walked a lot up and down. Some highlights include time lost on few trails, search for pine trees in the pine forest, looking for correct stream turn, fighting through green, etc. We didn't have major disasters. My first problem, cramp, started on the way to #62, up the steep hill. From that moment my both legs were cramping, altering from right to left and otherwise. We jogged all way from #19 to #15 as test. And it was clear for me I cannot jog, period. Only walking. Somehow we reached another map corner and had a break (water, Clif bar) for 20min. at #31. It was about 20:30 and we knew soon it's going to be dark and only couple day-light controls left. At #65 we got our light out and night navigation started. #60 was in complete darkness. #66 was a tricky one, but we didn't have problem with it. #70 went very well. And then we had our first BIG disaster at very easy control #25. How, how could we messed up? We went somewhere on the straight toward #25 after #70 climbing up in the darkness through some nasty woods. And we were so happy to see road, turned left w/out hesitation and walked north chatting. We suppose to see it from the road, at least few meter off, which is not a problem with light at night. Easy! And guess what, we walked too far north and I pointed out that control should be on the top hill and we already descending. Turned around, walked back probably to the same point we came in from the woods. Walked more south, no control. Walked north till roads junction and pace counted back south, no control. Lost 20min. or so on simple control. Then we went to #69, which was difficult control for the night, tried to make as easy as possible our route, spent another 20min. searching in the dark. Dropped another 2 controls and walked to the hash-house.

| Knee is hurting after yesterday's long run, but it should be back to "normal" level in another couple of days. This weekend is going to be tough. | ||
