running 2:17:00 [3] 17.7 km (7:44 / km) +900m 6:10 / km

home, KS, AG, BC, Tar, WW
this was slower than in May. tired legs, heavier rucksack than usual when running this route, hungry from the start and fairly strong westerly are my excuses. Had to wear hat and gloves!
I think I lost all the time on the way to Ben Cleuch - coming back seemed to be normal time.

running 8:00 [3]

school to home to collect rucksack and change shoes

Note

August training has gone OK. Knew it would be difficult to get consistent training around Wellies commitments, school commitments and the girls being on holiday, but managed to get a decent volume done.

September plan: 1 more long 3hr+ run (recceing Silver Day 3)
2 more biggish-volume weeks including speed stuff, perhaps slightly less volume than last 5 days though
run with rucksack as much as possible, rough terrain as much as possible
2 weeks taper (which unfortunately includes 3-day Silver exped but that can't be helped).

do physio exercises and stretches regularly
do core/circuits regularly

feeling tired

Monday Aug 29, 2016 #

running 40:00 [4]

tempo run with rucksack: gate above top carpark over Maiden's Well to foot of Fairy Hill, turn round and run back (to slightly below the gate - coming back is quicker), turn round and back to foot of Fairy Hill. Good mix of up, flat, down, with some slightly rougher stuff but still soft ground to nurse my feet.

Sunday Aug 21, 2016 #

running 29:30 [5] 5.7 km (5:11 / km) +90m 4:48 / km

afternoon run: came out of the house and legs decided to want to run fast. I've felt as though I've been itching to run fast for a while!

from the house, top road, golf course road, stopped when I got to the main road at Rumbling Bridge

running 36:00 [3] 5.7 mi (6:19 / mi) +70m 6:05 / mi

jog back
base of ball of foot started to hurt again, where it was hurting a lot after Wellies and first day of marathon recce - I think it's bruising from lack of cushioning in walking boots and pounding on the rocky trails.
left heel sore to start with as always, then eased off
everything else OK!
hamstring a bit upset afterwards, fine running which was nice.

cycling 1:45:00 [3]

recce of Silver D of E up to Fealar Lodge
bike in for 17k and then back again
trying hard on all the uphills, well, trying hard all the way except where it was too stony or downhill.
possibly managed to break the speed limit, woops. edit: stayed within the speed limit by 0.3 k/h!

moving time = 2 hours exactly. taken off 15 mins for some of the downhill bits.

running 1:20:00 [3] 10.8 km (7:24 / km) +245m 6:39 / km

from where I left the bike to Fealar lodge and back.
need to practise running fast carrying a rucksack - I think I don't switch my core on properly with a rucksack on. need to do some rucksack intervals!

running 47:30 [3] 7.3 km (6:30 / km) +300m 5:24 / km

Hillfoot Hill.
legs feeling very heavy. It occurred to me that all my running in the last 2 weeks has been in sopping wet heavy shoes.
R calf fine on the way up, then started hurting after about 5 mins of downhill.

running 16:00 [3]

wearing in new Inov8s. legs feel much lighter wearing these than my normal trainers.

running 3:30:00 [3] 20.0 km (10:30 / km) +800m 8:45 / km

Day 3
cycled in from end of Glen Feshie road to ruin just beyond the Lodge
then ran / walked up track to Lochan an t-Sluic, cut across country vaguely along the Allt na Cuilce to the start of the Minigaig.
Said hello to the Medics, sploshed up the Minigaig and ran up the 912 m Corbett. ran N off it to meet Barry and Louise and give them an update on the groups, then contoured W back to the Minigaig.
Slid back down the Minigaig to the bottom, and said hello to the Journeying group.
Cut back up across country to the Lochan an t-Sluic track, jogged back to the ruin.
On my feet for 4 hours 15, did a fair amount of it walking - tired and boggy terrain.
R calf quite sore. Everything else just generally tired.

cycling 40:00 [3]

up and down Glen Feshie. not counting the downhill bits.

running 2:25:00 [3] 20.0 km (7:15 / km) +190m 6:55 / km

Day 2
Parked at Auchlean this time, and ran up Glenfeshie until I caught the Turbosnails walking. legs feeling surprisingly not too bad after yesterday evening's efforts, but keeping pace nice and slow. quite narrow path / steep drop for some of it after their campsite, and a scrambly bit that I wasn't expecting - there was a path round some of it but I had seen the path and didn't know where it was heading to so didn't take it.
Enjoyed this run! Really pretty sections in Glen Feshie and the sun almost came out.

running 36:00 [3] 6.0 km (6:00 / km) +50m 5:46 / km

to the journeying group's campsite and back

running 17:00 [3] 3.0 km (5:40 / km)

and to the Medics campsite and back
not feeling too bad!
Although going slowly, everything seemed to be moving nicely today.

Thursday Aug 11, 2016 #

running 2:10:00 [3] 22.0 km (5:55 / km) +250m 5:35 / km

DofE Gold Day 1
parked at end of Uath Lochans road and ran in to check on the Turbosnails at their campsite 1k south of Ruigh Aiteachan bothy. Should have been 8k each way, but when I got to the bridge over the Feshie at the Lodge, it was destroyed (several years ago...), and there was no way it was fordable after 24 hours heavy rain, despite looking in several places.
So 3k back to the Achleum bridge and an extra 3k on the other side. Slow over the main stream crossing as well after the banks of the stream have been majorly washed away this winter.
Legs feeling v heavy by end - road trainers were very heavy because water-logged.

running 20:00 [3] 3.4 km (5:53 / km)

to the Medics campsite and back

running 40:00 [3] 6.0 km (6:40 / km) +50m 6:24 / km

to the Journeying group campsite and back
8 pm by now and somewhat exhausted!
really sore quads from halfway back from the Turbosnails onwards didn't help.

running 1:28:00 [3] 12.7 km (6:56 / km) +390m 6:00 / km

Part 1 of marathon recce Red Squirrel campsite to where the route joins the West Highland Way.
there is 3 k which is incredibly boggy!
Now need to work out what shoes to wear to cover: tarmac, good forest track, rough stony track, hill path, stream crossings, peat bog. for 4 and a half or more hours. with guaranteed wet feet from 2.5k in.

Saturday Aug 6, 2016 #

running 3:18:00 [3] 31.0 km (6:23 / km) +870m 5:36 / km

Part 2 of marathon recce, top of Glencoe to finish.
There happened to be a Tyndrum - Fort William event happening today, so had lots of people to overtake and keep me running, so ended up running harder than I would otherwise have done.
left heel feeling fine, but seized up afterwards
hamstring basically fine, not sure if I'm pulling as hard with that leg as normal, but moving OK
as usual on long runs, ran out of water after 2 hours (started with 1 litre), so stopped about three times to drink from streams, which added a bit of time.

Friday Aug 5, 2016 #

Note

Wellies
feeling tired in a different way!

running 11:00 [3]

a wee jog after tea to loosen things up a bit. Left heel still sore which is very annoying!

Tuesday Aug 2, 2016 #

Note

Wellies at Lendrick Muir.
feeling knackered!

Monday Aug 1, 2016 #

running 40:00 [3]

slow jog. left heel and right hamstring still troublesome, but not as awful as they could have been.
