definitely feeling better than last Saturday, but still getting tired towards the end. Quite pleased with the speed once it is adjusted for climb though, since I thought it would be slower.

FRA relays Leg 3 navigation leg with Suzanne.

This was really tough! Great fun, but a real challenge. Cloud down to about 200m, and fairly thick. We set off way at the back of the field, so not many other teams around.

Leg 1 was straight forward, along a track and then the path made by other runners.
Leg 2 was route choice, round or down/up; we went for round, and found a nice trod. I think round was an OK option - it certainly made the control easier to find.
Leg 3 was easy, following a fence and then off at a corner.
Leg 4 was tricky. We took a really safe route aiming off to a wall but the terrain was horrible - peat hags and tussocks. Got to the wall as planned, along to a corner, and then needed to pace along it to then cut off into horrible bog. Turned off on the early side, and got a bit worried wallowing about in peat and bog. Managed to find it OK, but was definitely worried!
Leg 5 We started off going straight, but we then came to the gorge. I was expecting to go upstream to find a crossing point, but marshals told us to "follow the tape to the end of the tape, then go down and up." So, we followed the tape to the end of the tape, and looked down into the ravine. Surely they didn't mean us to go down there? So went back to double check the instructions - go to the end of the tape, then down and up. So we looked down into the ravine, thought we could get down safely, and maybe getting up would be easier than it looked. So we went down carefully, stood in the stream at the bottom, looked up the cliff at the other side and decided we wouldn't even try. So, climbed back up again to the end of the tape. We then decided to go downstream a bit to the path, which wasn't where we had planned to go, but seemed safer than the ravine. However before we got to the path, we found a safe place to cross, which is probably what the marshal was meaning! Managed to relocate OK, used the top of the hill as an attack point, and found it fine.
Leg 6 then back to the finish was straightforward, and nice to be out of the cloud.

Didn't run much of it particularly hard - we only really ran hard at the start and finish and on the steep uphills. Suzanne was probably quicker than me on the flat tracks, and I was faster on the hills. The rest of the time was a question of making sure the nav was right, and not breaking a leg in the rough terrain.

Glad we didn't make any massive mistakes, and thanks to all the marshals who did a great job of trying to make the controls as easy to find as possible and handed out lots of lovely jelly babies!

Glencoe marathon
really pleased with time! 2nd V40, 5th girl. 1st Sarah Rollins 4'09. 45th overall.
(Time was good enough to have been first vet and second girl for last 3 years, grr.)

Feet behaved themselves thanks to (far too much) Ibuprofen and cocodamol. Left calf sore and threatening to cramp in last 10k.

First 10k was fairly steady. Lots of people are apparently unable to run across tiny streams without coming to a complete standstill and holding up a big queue behind, so did a few overtaking runs through the heather. Loved the descent from top of Devil's Staircase to Kinlochleven. Took it steady on climb out of KLL, and then it was just a case of gritting my teeth and keeping running as best I could. Last 10k before the last 3k descent were tough. Last 3k down the forest track was OK, running fairly fast (4'43 m/k) but worried that calf might cramp.

Weather was perfect! very cold to start with, but no wind and sunny, and not too hot when it did get a bit warmer.
Underfoot conditions sopping on the boggy bits in Glencoe!

10k - 65 mins
Kinlochleven - 2'11 to 21k
total - 4'23'23
