Orienteering 30:00 [3]

Excuse central as to why it didn't go well tonight. I have apparently forgotten how to orienteer...

Orienteering 1:44:00 [3]

Middle at Mount Laurier. This race was kind of a disaster. All of the good tips I've built up all went to pot. Started 2nd after Carol with everyone still arriving. They hadn't flagged the arena area properly, so I had to run through people to get to the forest. I didn't give myself any time to look at the map - I just wanted to get out of site so I could concentrate. Decided to try and go straight - overshot and ended up at the lakes. Couldn't make much sense of all those squiggly brown lines. 17 minutes later found control 1.

After that it went better. My leg hurt, so I walked 95% of the course. Used it more as a practise to check off features and try to understand the contours better. Also work on bearings, although my compass had a bubble which made it swing off at times... that was fun!

Decided to skip 8-10 and 17 in interest of time, and saving my leg.

Great time, awesome and challenging courses, and now I have more mountain bike trails to explore!

Orienteering 28:17 [3]

Downhill sprint at Canmore Nordic Centre. Decided to take this one slow to a. remember how to read all those brown squiggly lines, and b. not break ankle on downhill sprint. Map reading was fine, just too slow. Mistakes at 3 and 13.

Orienteering 1:40:36 [3]

Best race of the weekend. Slloooooooooow up hills; need to train more. Also eye strain from reading 1:15000 map.. how can people read those things and run at the same time?!

Brent gave me some tips to stay wide with long route choices, so did that to 5. Mistake at 9, nearly ran off map going to 11, but corrected very quickly (yay!). Running down from 10 left knee started hurting, similar to last year. Running flat was OK, but downhill was a no no. Had to walk most of the rest of the course.

cycling 45:00 [3]

To school and back. My legs were not enjoying this.. I think my tires are under inflated. That is my excuse. Beautiful sunset!

Running 25:00 [3]

Get the legs moving between online midterm and class. 3 x short (1-1.5 min) 2 block sprints just because I felt I should. Took Carcross map to relieve the boredom, and get me reading contours again before the weekend!

cycling 1:45:00 [3]

Biking at Lost Lake with Pascal. Lots of fun! Found some crazy trails where I ran with my bike, because it was just easier than trying to ride... drizzly, but still a great day. Love when you can do winter and summer sports in the same weekend!

Skiing 2:00:00 [3]

Last ski of the year at Whistler. Lovely spring skiing! Beautiful day. Need new boots...

Running 29:00 [3]

Down to Jericho and around the trails for a while. Nice day, boring run. I should take maps with me!

Running (barefoot) 6:00 [3]

Bored, so decided to see what this barefoot running is all about. Took off my shoes and ran from Alma to home in my socks. Few funny looks, but then a guy road past on his bike blasting Jake Johnson, so I fit right in!

Things I noticed:
- I naturally heel strike, or have really weak calves/feet muscles
- I have very flat feet.
- Running barefoot on grass is much nicer than on pavement

Not sure if I was running faster or not, but it felt like way less effort, and there was less jarring through my knees with each step. Conclusion - I'll probably do it again, but maybe mid run at Jericho instead of along the pavement.

Cleveland dam. Had a smooth race, good flow. Lost my glasses at one point - happy to have the flagging tape on them to locate!

Orienteering 15:25 [3]

Control pick up with Marissa

Note
(rest day)

Walked to school, took just over an hour (with bus assistance for last few blocks). 2nd midterm this week - not too bad. First one out; never sure if that's a good sign or not :) 2 down, 1 to go, then 2 more next week and 1 the week after. Who thought this school business was a good idea?!

5 PM

cycling 47:00 [3]

To and from school. On the way there my legs were not too happy, but much better on the way back. Bike lanes all the way... love it!

Note
(rest day)

Promoting orienteering at MEC today. Lots of interest, lots of people who knew what orienteering was, but hadn't heard of the club. Hopefully will translate in to some more starts at Rice Lake next weekend!

Running 27:00 [3]

Down to the water, along and up Vine to Broadway, then along to Maple, and back along 10th.

By Point Grey Rd, the stitch I had on Wednesday came back, so this was more of a walk/run (timing is only for running part). I usually only get stitches along my scar, but this one is to the left of my stomach. Weird... it had been nearly 3 hours since I ate.

Wednesday May 2, 2012 #

Orienteering 48:03 [3]

Memory O by Mike Rascher. I missed 1 control. It's hard to relocate when you have no map! Rest went OK.

Running felt fine, sluggish in the middle, then strong at the end until the stitch set in.

Gym 12:00 [3]

2 x 50 seconds of each - plank, push ups, squats, burpees, high knees, sit ups

Did this around 10:30am, after 2.5 hrs of studying and no food. Felt really nauseous and weak afterwards - had to sit by the toilet for a while. Had a juice box, which made me feel better. Probably low blood sugar.
