Orienteering race (Long) 1:08:11 intensity: (2:08 @1) + (3:10 @2) + (50:13 @3) + (12:40 @4) **** 7.37 km (9:15 / km) +246m 7:56 / km
ahr:154 max:171 spiked:12/14c (injured)

11:39 AM. Creswick, VIC. Temperature: 25.2 °C
Burned 541 calories.
Australian Long Orienteering Championships - Chapel Flat Course: M21AS 6.7 km 200 m

Not a bad race other than the injury, but we'll get to that later. I was a bit hesitant leaving the start triangle to 1 thorugh the bush as the first 10m or so were quite thick, but thankfully it cleared up and running near the creek was quite fast. I didn't have any difficulties until 4 when i left 3 in the wrong direction (about 45degrees out). I chose the relatively straight line option for the long leg. I thought that by the time i hit the track before the green, i'd be able to either bolt around the track or dive through the green. The green was a good option with my pace not really slowing for the vegetation, and only the contours. The shock of hitting the goldmining for the last few control on the course took some extra concentration and a still messed up 7 a bit drifting too far to the right on the leg and stuffing up the approach to the control by not seeing the erosion below the bracken. After that it was pretty good going, opting for the cautious navigation over the speed to ensure i pick off the controls cleanly. I wobbled on 12 as my attacke point was further off the red-line than anticipated and having to take a sharp left hand turn on the edge of the circle to get the flag. Climbing out of 12 was a struggle and just as i managed to start running downhill again on the saddle my left ankle went pop as a went down a hole, leaving me to hobble (as fast as i could) into the finish. Managed to win the class today! So Australian Champion, that's pretty good i guess. The ankle will be fine, but still swollen tonight (5th October). Hopefully it will be fine again soon, but i skipped competing in the relays to let it rest.

Great carnival! 5 races, 4 of them championships and got a place in all of the champs. Pretty happy with it all.

Australian Sprint Orienteering Championships Part 1 - St Patrick's College Course: M21A 1.7 km

Headed out confident and cautious. I think i chose all the optimal choices through to the map exchange, well at least looking back on it i wouldn't have changed my mind on any routes. Got cheered on to jump the fence onto the oval, i almost attempted it. Instead i did a one handed leap.

Orienteering race (Sprint Urban) 6:18 [4] **** 1.06 km (5:57 / km) +51m 4:47 / km

Australian Sprint Orienteering Championships Part 2 - St Patrick's College Course: M21A 1.1 km

The second part of the course was pretty good too. I kept a pretty good pace for me and lost no time due to walking. The route choices were all pretty good i think. If anything maybe it was quicker to go left from 12 -13, but not by much.

Took the oppurtunity to stretch my legs from the caravan park. Was quite pleased with my effort, though a bit upset i didn't get the 5min/km...

Run for Hannah - Federation Uni Mt Helen Campus Course: Senior Boys 2.9 km

After the Schools Sprint Champs, the adults got to have a go. Not many people could match the times of the kids though!!! Everything seemed prett straightforward with the course as long as you read the map and descriptions ahead. I didn't have any major hassles other than 9 where i misread the number of steps in the building i had to go around just coming into the circle. Then i didn't keep my map oriented leaving 9 and took a moment to re-orientate the map to keep going. I think i chose all the optimal route choices with the exception of 2-3 perhaps where i opted to avoid the assembly area and went around the east side of the big building instead. Jolly good fun.

Warm up to the start

It was a bit of a way to the start cross country. A good chance to stretch the legs.

Australian Middle Distance Championships - Petticoat Gully Course: M21A 4.4 km 145 m

After a bit of a warmup and a round-a-bout way to the start, i was pretty eager to get in the terrain again. Started off nice and slow again to get the navigation right early on. High-Fived some campers in the campsite before 2 as they were packing up, i must have looked impressive storming through then heading straight into the terrain again. I'd like to think so anyway. Slatts caught me by 5 and i led him through to 7 where he made a break for the lead. Probably stuffed the long leg to 12 as i came into the green creek at a crap spot and took ages to get through and out the other side. Stuffed up the short leg to 15 as i lost a bit of direction control and got suckered into a plainly visible control which wasn't mine. Then took the slow way to 16 following th read, then the awesome MTB track. I managed to catch a bit of time through 16 to 19 on Slatts, but not enough to beat him - he was very scrappy through the last technical section, where i seemed to blitz. Again, a very fun race and ended up third behind Slatts and Laurie!

Victorian Middle Distance Champs - Creswick Diggings Course: M21A 4.5 km 185 m

First proper race in terrain for quite some time, and in goldmining of all places! Went out pretty steadily to ensure i didn't stuff the first couple of legs. Settled into the race and took some wider options to avoid the denser green. I really struggled up the hills but loved the open running in the downhills. Felt pretty accurate in the navigation too until i hesitated and fluffed around number 9 until i realised i was far too far to the north of the circle. Other than that it was a good race. Ended up 3rd place behind Stuart and Slatts.
