NavDash 5: Australian Sprint Orienteering Championships - Mandjar Bay
10:55 AM. Mandurah. Burned 412 calories.
Course: 1 3.9 km 14 m
I ran elites, so that's my first excuse for coming 3rd to last.
I was really pleased to get one over Juffy as i saw him make a mistake by missing 14 altogether. I was noble enough to advise him of this after i found him leaving 15, but he had no hope of catching up the lost time since 14 to 15 was the longest leg of the course. It was heaps of fun to run around this area, it is a wonderful map, ableit a little over mapped i think and this seemed to lead to some stretching of the rules for sprint orienteering. Saying that though, it was a hell of a lot of fun.

Fern and I decided to tackle this together, we were a good team really. I was great on the navigation and rounded Fern up when she missed the turn-offs, and Fern kicked my butt when i was being slack with the running. I must say it was a little rude of Fern to work as a team together and then Fern sprints off at the very end to beat me by 7 seconds. How rude! It was good fun though, pity about the rain.

7:30 AM. Cunndinup. Burned 783.9848 calories.

We ran from the Tomas family farm (Dalmatia) into the forest and back again. It was meant to be a 5km bit of jog, but Frank's memory of the trals was a little bit blurred as a result of them turning the tracks into gravel highways rather than forest tracks. So really, his memory was fine. We got to see a great deal of the surrounding scrub which was fantastic and it was a lovely morning for a jog. I'm amazed how fit Frank is for a man of his age, i couldn't keep up with him in parts.
Staying on the farm was great, i got to drive the tractor.

I think i enjoyed the last day the most, though i was really kicking myself after a risk i had chosen for the long leg ended up on causing me to lose the race for the day (and possible the carnival). I was really clean through most of the controls except for a wobble on couple. When it came to the long leg it took me a long time to decide whether to go straight through the steep bit of crap and then have a whole heap of flat open running, or to take to gentle up hill and stay in the open for the whole leg with the climb throughout. I took the risky first option thinking that Juffy would probably take the safer option. Unfortunately the risk didn't pay off and i was 5th on that leg and that cost me the race. I may have actually not had the legs either way and possibly the race couldn't have been won by me, but we'll never really know. Still i was pretty chuffed to come second and was so impressed by the skills of Juffy, Sten and the other Sledgers they made for a really memorable Easter 3 Day.

Easter 2011: Day 2 - Frazzled Again
11:03 AM. York. Burned 502 calories.
Course: 99 5.6 km 235 m
I was pretty happy with my efforts on this race. I picked up the map to be terified by one of those legs that takes you parallel to contours with no gullies or anything to count as you go past. Thankfully the vegetation was really helpful and i didn't really wobble from the leg and spiked the control. I was thoroughly in the lead to #8 but being hot and tired after the hill climb i really needed a drink. I found one at a random control i passed and contiuned on. Unfortunately my mind was going and a fell down the wrong spur and ended up 90* from the direction i wasnted right near the end of the leg. It was here i hear a horrible noise in the scrub which sounded remotely like Juffy. It was him and i had todart off pretty quickly as he had caught 4' on me was now leading over me. Thankfull Juffy made a few errors and i managed to hold the lead in the end of the course. So i was sitill sitting 3rd after the second day.

Easter 2011: Day 1 - Frazzled Begins
10:59 AM. York. Burned 475 calories.
Course: 99 5.1 km 205 m
The Mass Start! As it turns out the race wasn't black tie after all - silly me for wearing my suit and bowtie. We all lined up just a stone's throw from the toilets and raced up the hill to the first control. I was a little stunned, no one else appeared to push to the first control and i got there to win the split and the hearts and minds of the adoring public. Pretty soon i was passed by Juffy, and most of the faster people. The second leg was the long one and Juffy led them astray on a less than ideal route choice, while i was left alone to plunder the control. Despite me not having the pack to assist me i mananged to punch this control only a couple of secconds AHEAD of the pack, so my route choice stacked up. I lead for the next couple of legs until my legs decided the hill was too tough. I wobbled up the hill and fell way behind the front pack. The down hill leg wasn't so flash and i think i caught up Juffy and Sten (Juffys parasite for the day) as i saw them leaving the control. Then i chose the wrong route choice and took 2 others with me - Andre and Michael. The rest of the course was spent trying to catch up to Juffy and Sten but they were too far ahead. I finished in 3rd behind those two and was really quite tired after racing in my Tuxed-O.

What a blinder to start the carnival. I have not really ever been so happy about a race than i felt about this one. Finished in 7th place. Felt pretty strong despite the heat. Navigated almost perfectly between the controls and enjoyed the pace. At this point i would've said i was going to ace this carnival despite Juffy beating me by 56" i figured he must be tired for the rest of the carnival after that.

Just call me Steven Bradbury. I was looking at getting a 4th place (last in the course) after John, Simon and Ruhi had also entered it. However there was a "tragic" mix-up with maps at the start and John and Ruhi took a course 2 map. Sweet i thought second place behind Simon. Quite happy with that prospect. It wasn't until i had finished my run (about 35min behind Simon) that Simon let slip that he actually DNF'd since he lost his SI card and wasn't able to prove he'd finsihed his course. Robin Reinstated his result thinking that it wouldn't affect anything, so in protest i made sure Simon was DNF'd again. Hence meaning i won the course and scored 1000 OY points for the season. YAY for me. I don't feel at all guilty or remorseful by winning by default. And before you say that i cam last also, let me ask you this: "Did Steven Bradbury get a gold medal for coming first or last?" It doesn't matter, he got a gold medal. So did i (metaphorically speaking since orienteering is too stingy to reward wins with medals).
As for the orienteering, i was a little messy, stuffing up the 2nd control in a big way (in the circle) and choosing a few sub-optimal route choices. I had no problem in the areas i considered problems before (the rocks south of the road). In general i had a great time. I was feeling pretty weary by the end.

Quick run with Fern after a tough week at work. I wasn't really that motivated and i was slow. We could here whistles and shouts around the Blackwood Oval and found out a footy game was on, we avoided it. It was deceiving running in the dark on trails i thought i was familiar with, i was more often confused than not. Nice to get home and walk bare-foot on carpet. mmmm carpet.

Course: Long 4.8 km 210 m
I was meant to run the M21A course, but since there wasn't anyone else to do SI i was stuck on the computers for some time and changed myself to M21AS. THis wasn't a bad idea as it turns out since I would never have been able to be within 50% of Simon's time to make M21A worthwhile for anyone. The M21AS however was a lot of fun and i won. I didn't make too many errors, just some wobbles and blundered the finish leg. Hey I won the course too! all the results stuff for this event was enough to make me get quite frustrated, probably mostly because of SocialFX - the OSA Web CMS.

Fern and I ran aorund Kuitpo checking controls for my event in May. Turns out that every point feature i put a control on was not there. Stoopid forests. What do they think - they can just harvest their forests and destroy our features?
I don't think that there will be too many modifications to the courses though. It wasn't nearly as bad in part than i thought it would be.

The redwoods are heaps good. Especially by torch light. I saw a ring-tail possum. and lots of kangaroos. We took the river path on the way back and wer surprised to see that they had actually repaired it. Pity they still haven't opened it since promising it would be finished in January. What are these people? Volunteers? I'd get sacked if i took that long to finsih a job....

I ran in Ardrossan since i was working at Black Point. COuldn't really be stuffed running any speed stuff, so i plodded. I took a path which led to the back of the BHP Depot, i decided i shouldn't have been there so i turned around and went back. I stopped in to check out the Ardrossan Footy Club training. I don't know how scary they'll be to the Kadina (strictly the team i should go for since I work there every month). I kept moving once i was spotted by the coach. Dinner at the pub that night was awesome, though i over-ate.....

10:23 AM. Eden Hills. Burned 1473 calories.

Fern and I lazed in bed for a long time this morning an then decided to get up and go for a run. We ran a long way. The key things about this run were: 1. I fell over in Brown Hill Ck trying to cross the creek. Both my shins ended up landing on a log and are still hurting. 2. We saw Simon running up Brown Hill Ck and he was surprised to see us! 3. The climb in Randell's is bloody tough, more so after 11km of running. 4. You should always carry a few dollars for either a train ride home, a phonecall to get someone to pick you up, candy from the candy shop or if you run past an oppurtunistic Sausage Sizzle on the side of Main Rd in Blackwood.
