Short run with Fern, Jenny and Troy the toy boy. Was a nice night for running, warm, and the wind had died right off. Lots of rubbish all over the place from the weather today.

2013 Australian Long Championships - Slap Up Creek Course: M21A 8.3 km 220 m

I entered M21A for the first time in my life, knowing full well i couldn't handle Elite long distance, and I would have felt like doing more after M21AS. So M21A it was to be. It was a perfect day for orienteering too, cool and sunny with some fantastic scenery and rocks. The forested bits were pretty scrappy with tonnes of fallen timber, making it quite hard to proceed much faster than a jog (I really don't know how the elites do it). Navigation was pretty good up until 5, where i helped Jane Fuller out and ran off missing my gully after the track by a bit. It wasn't too bad an error except for it not being quite as efficient as i would've liked. Number 6 was a disaster with the vague poor visibility i had no plan or attackpoints, and it showed. Let that be a lesson kiddies. I smartened my act up after that and was doing great until 10, where i stopped for water then the Tachycardia kicked in and I had to rest to get it to stop. I lost about 90sec to 2 minutes waiting for my ticker to do the thing it is meant to do, then i was able to run again. I was pretty good through the rest of the course and even beat a couple of elites from 15 to 16 as they took a less efficient choice. I was 2nd place by only 16 seconds, and i know all that time could've been saved and more. So my heart just wasn't in for the race, and I didn't take the win as a result. Will be scheduling that surgery in 2014 now. Still pretty happy with 2nd place, no complaints from me!

2013 Australian Sprint Championships - Canberra Grammar Course: M21E 2.8 km 45 m

Was feeling pretty good about this, and then I started. My legs felt like lead weight and my chest was heavy too. Probably too much endurance sports and not enough sprinty sport. I felt pretty clean on the navigation barring 15 where I mis-read the map and though i could enter the courtyard from the passage i was already running through. I maybe had a couple of poor route-choices, though I do feel I nailed the majority of it. The map and terrain was pretty fun, and the narrow passageways meant I had a few collisions with other orienteers. I think everyone did. I ended up 42nd in the field of 49, which was 1 up from the Easter Prologue of the same field size. The main thing is that I beat Conrad.

2013 SA Middle Distance Championships - Moon Rocks Course: M21A 5.7 km 190 m

A fun race. I was first starter which meant i was going to be down the places since this map is a sort of "follow-me" map as you can see pretty much anything. I had to turn on and fix the first control which cost me a few seconds. I was very surprised to see how quick Slatts caught up on me, but i kept him at bay until he actually caught me on the long leg. Simon, Greg, Slatts and I all converged halfway between 9 and 10. I was unable to shake Slatts for the rest of the course, while Greg and Simon just ran through us like we didn't exist. I led Andrew thorugh 10-16 pretty much unscathed so i suggested to him that he might want to lead and find some controls. He promptly said yes and started walking. So without a plan for 15-16 we both overshot it by a long way and dropped far too low (looks like we only missed it by 50m or so). We found John who was searching for 13/14 and realised we had gone far too far. I picked up on the creek pattern in the un-rocky area and trotted back to the control circle - Andrew in tow. I had a few issues in the circles probably since i am out of practice reading the full control description. I will need to be good at that next week. Fun day and tasty brownies afterwards. I went back for a second one.

2013 SA MTBO Teams Challenge

Fern and I attempted this. Lauren was going to join us, but when we got there her helmet had not. So Lauren took a map and opted to run instead. Then while we were on our way to the first control of the event, Fern hit some fencing wire which promptly tore off the rear derailleur on her bike. So we coasted back to the start, stole Lauren's bike and cruised around a couple of controls in the south instead. So what was 4 hour event, turned into only about 1 hour of actual riding. Never mind, it was a lovely day out! We still managed to win the Open Mixed Category!

Fern and I made good use of the evening light and nice weather to do one of my favourite runs. I promised Fern we would see Koalas, Kangaroos, Cows, Sheep and Horses. We ticked all those boxes. We saw Spider and Donkey Orchids and a whole lot more Roo's along Olave Hill Road, and the sunlight was perfect and golden through the trees. We were able to stop and watch the sunset on the way down the hill to Turners Ave which topped off a lovely run. The hills back along Turners were a challenge...

Spring 12 Hour Rogaine: "God's Country: Beyond Hell's Gates"

Fern and I teamed up for the 12 hour rogaine. Hopefully Fern didn't want to take it too seriously. After a few pushes at the start I managed to get Fern to slow down to a more comfortable pace. For the first 7 controls we were right with 2 or three other teams, so a good 1.5 - 2hours into the rogaine. That is unusual for a rogaine. We got to our halfway mark on our routechoice about 4 hours into the rogaine, so it was apparent that we underestimated our speed and what we could acheive. We didn't amend our course though, as we were both quite happy to keep it pretty casual. We did make some amendments though to get to water at the southern end of the map, so we dropped a 60 pointer and gained a 20 and a 30 and agreed to throw in an extra 40 towards the end to more than make up for the lost 60 pts.
The terrain was really nice and the weather was perfect. We saw stacks of wildlife in the way of goats, sheep, roos, emus and cows, and plenty of bird life. The night navigation was a challenge which required a lot of focus, but we're pretty pleased that we nailed it. Fern and I finished in 7th place which isn't bad considering we only did 2/3 of the rogaine....

This felt awful. I haven't run before breakfast for ages and I now know why. Could hardly lift my legs up the hills and felt generally tired and grumpy. We were out while the CFS did their 8am siren test. It was loud, even over a kilometre away from the siren.

Strength and Conditioning 20:00 [3]

7:00 PM. Marion. Burned 202 calories.

Joined the Westminster Old Scholars Outdoor Group (WOSOG) for their weekly climb in the "cave" at Westminster School. I forgot how hard climbing was, battling with foot cramps and weak arms. I did manage a reasonable traverse over the roof and from the comments i received, they thought i was i complete calm control. The truth was that i had just stopped breathing and the lack of oxygen was making move a lot slower..... Fun night catching up with some new and old friends! Evan was there, who was just back from his XPD attempt, he was gutted to have to pull the pin, but I think he and his team did an amazing job! It sounded like the leg across the Lake Frome was quite demoralizing, only seeing white and blue (salt and sky) in 30+ degrees and the only navigation is by bearing.

10:34 AM. Tanunda. Burned 760 calories.
Barossa Range OY Course: 1 9.3 km 410 m

What a perfect day to go orienteering.
There were amazing views over the Barossa Valley, even to the point where I overshot #8 because i was enjoying the view and ignoring the fact i was meant to be looking for a control. It was interesting to have a 1:15 000 scale map in my hand for a change and made for a challenge reading the finer details. There were a couple of issues with the course, #14 was no where to be found by many (until Greg managed to find it ~170m from the control circle) and a couple of other controls on incorrect features inside the circle (#4 and #9) but I didn't let any of that get in my way of having a great time. The Tanunda Creek was flowing nicely and was fun to cross a couple of times during the course (and i didn't get my feet wet so probably lost time as a result). I struggled in the circle on a couple of controls hunting for the right rock, but got there in the end. I even managed to be the first to a couple of controls late in the course as Simon stopped at the missing #14 and didn't catch me up until 20-21 where we just jogged and chatted for the rest of the course. What a great day of O. Some places we go orienteering just make you feel like a better person for the experience running amogst beautiful green paddocks, big shady gums and plenty of kangaroos.

Note

Port Pirie.

Can't really log any activity for Monday to Thursday, but i was totally active doing a detail survey over parts of Abbotoirs Road in Warnertown. I had 4 10+ hour days in the field and in the heat that was unexpected. At least it was a fairly quiet road apart from the odd freight train (not on the road but on the adjacent crossing) and a few friendly locals. My arms got tired and bruised from holding the GPS and Pogo all day long, but that is a occupational hazard i guess.

Pymton OY Course: M21A 9.5 km 340 m

It was a fantastic day to be out orienteering. Warmest day in a while, but with a steady S-Westerly blowing it was cool enough to run. I pre-entered course 1 for some reason, but still felt happy to do that at the registration, so off i trotted. The first few controls were fine, but i nearly missed #5 as i was happily running along the road not really giving much attention to the map. Luckily i spotted 5 where i glanced at the map from the road, looked over my shoulder and the control was just there. The navigation today was a pretty easy only made harder by the Tintookies strategy of putting controls on the incorrect features. It was good to see Simon scratching his head at 11 as he ran straigh past the flag to the correct feature, while Andre (TT President) and I literally flowed through the control before Simon knew what was going on. For some reason the course setter decided to convert the course from a long distance race to a sprint/middle with many controls at the last half of the course. I felt like i had the energy to complete it, but not the speed, though i managed to pip Greg by about 3 minutes! It was generally a pretty fun race.
