A Run

The crew ran up to Nicolle where we lost Bridget (with a cold) and then we discovered were going to run downhill alot to the oval. That was fun. Of course this meant a whole lot of up afterwards. That was less fun.

Running 42:00 intensity: (10 @1) + (4:45 @2) + (32:55 @3) + (4:10 @4) 6.63 km (6:20 / km) +138m 5:44 / km

Arvo Jog Around the 'Dene

Fern went off for a walk, so I went off for a jog. It was nicely cool and the streets were quiet. Didn't walk all that much and ran up most of the hills. I can never find the right path through the forest from Tallarook to the creek crossing, so I did a bit of terrain running too!

Running 52:05 intensity: (10 @1) + (7:25 @2) + (42:25 @3) + (2:05 @4) 6.97 km (7:28 / km) +273m 6:15 / km
ahr:148 max:162

10:47 AM. Piccadilly. Burned 629 calories.
Mount Lofty Gardens to YHA

While Fern walked the direct way, I "ran" the long way. As soon as i started running, my toes went numb, i'm not sure why, perhaps because of poor circulation in the morning? It was pretty pleasant run along Wine Shanty Track and so i was enjoying it so much, i forgot to turn up Lodge Track to go meet Fern. The last climb up to the YHA really sucked, not only because it was steep, but also because the track was clogged with the usual mass of walkers.

Walk 46:55 intensity: (38:35 @1) + (6:40 @2) + (1:40 @3) 4.19 km (11:12 / km) +88m 10:08 / km
ahr:107 max:145

11:42 AM. Mount Lofty YHA. Burned 272 calories.
Mount Lofty YHA to Gardens

After i met back up with Fern, we walked together back to the gardens. We took a track that I hadn't been on before which ended up at the TV towers, which also meant we had to walk along the road for a while. Once we got into the gardens it was really nice, with the autumnal colours begining to glow. I couldn't believe how many people were in the gardens, and the parking at the bottom was chockers. I rewarded my running/walking efforts with the best Chocolate Malt Milkshake at the Upper Sturt General Store on the way home.

ahr:151 max:164

5:32 PM. North Adelaide. Burned 285 calories.
Warm Up

Waiting for people to arrive, i did a lap and a half warmup. Then I saw Simon and Fern. Simon advised me that there would be no other partakers tonight.

Running intervals 11:10 intensity: (15 @1) + (15 @2) + (45 @3) + (9:55 @4) 2.27 km (4:55 / km)
ahr:164 max:178

6:06 PM. North Adelaide. Burned 212 calories.
200s

Same as last week, except i started at the 400m mark rather than the 0m mark. Simon paced me and talked to me while i did them. I think he understood when it took up to 200m to respond to his conversation. I was surprised that he paced me at under 4min/km's. I didn't think i could run at that pace.

Running warm up/down 12:30 intensity: (11:55 @3) + (35 @4) 2.08 km (6:01 / km) +4m 5:57 / km
ahr:154 max:178

6:17 PM. North Adelaide. Burned 194 calories.
Cool Down Lap

We continued to chat about easter on the cool down lap, i managed to respond a lot sooner to Simon during this lap.

Cycling 1:11:15 intensity: (28:55 @1) + (20:20 @2) + (21:00 @3) + (1:00 @4) 17.64 km (14.9 kph) +328m
ahr:121 max:166

9:20 AM. Hawthorndene. Burned 464 calories.
QJub and Apex Ride

A very cruisy ride with those of us remaining in Adelaide for easter. Zed, Worra, Fernwerm and myself. It was a nice easy pace and i was certianly not cycling fit. My rear brakes have given out completely which made coming down Saddle Hill Road a little more scarier.

WOSOG Westventure Race - #1 Knot Tying

First activity for the WOSOG Westventure Race was a knot ball tying exercise, where the team had to tie a length of rope into as many knots as we could within 10min. There was a bit of strategy in this that as the rope was going to be untied later - by the opposing team... So you could either do a thorough job and take a long time, or do a rough job and take a lead. Our team did a pretty thorough job.

Other 15:00 [3]

10:20 AM. Point Sturt.
WOSOG Westventure Race - #2 Blind fold tent erecting

I sat out of this round as it was only a 2 person permitted activity. The other team got well ahead of us as they weren't as thorough with the knot tying, and they managed to get an easy tent to erect. The fault of one of our team members since they thought the tents to choose from were all the same. They weren't. The other team got a single pole, modern easy tent then our guys pulled out of the bag what appeared to be a "Eureka Caddis" which i was quite familiar with from my yr10 days, but the early 20's lads in our team erecting the tent probably hadn't even seen before. So we were at a disadvantage and i was allowed to sabotage the other team. I stole two pegs, just before they were finishing and hid them in a bag for them to find still blindfolded. The other team still had the advantage and finished this task first.

Other 5:00 [3]

10:35 AM. Point Sturt.
WOSOG Westventure Race - #3 Blind fold obstacle race

It was my moment to shine now, having to direct another team mate through an obstacle course blindfolded (they were blindfolded - not me). Did this pretty well as I channelled my setting-out skills from work. It was pretty much a success.

Other 10:00 [3] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

10:40 AM. Point Sturt.
WOSOG Westventure Race - #4 Run-Swim

This next activity was the most memorable from yr10 - two thirds of the run-swim-run we used to do at dawn many mornings during the 2 week camp. Except this part was just the run then swim. When they say swim the rule is just to get fully submerged. For some reason i was actually quite keen to get in the water. I was the second in our team of four to get in there. Once out it was a quick dry down to get to the next checkpoint only seconds behind the other team.

Other 30:00 [3] 4.0 km (7:30 / km)

10:50 AM. Point Sturt.
WOSOG Westventure Race - #5 "Orienteering"

I know that orienteering taught in schools isn't what i know orienteering to be. I know that orienteering in the manner it was down at Westventure teaches kids about grid references and things they do need to know, but still, i wish it wasn't called orienteering when done this way it makes our sport look way dorkier than it actually is (yes i know it is dorky still). We had to mark our checkpoints on as we find them from the grid references given, and the control description was a cryptic clue for the obscure features where the checkpoint was. But still it was fun to run around with a map and i know i'm really critical of orienteering not put together the "proper" way. Even cooler that the map we used was the one i made in 2012. This leg led us from one side of the peninsula to the other.
11 AM

Other 20:00 [3] 2.5 km (8:00 / km)

11:20 AM. Point Sturt.
WOSOG Westventure Race - #6 Kayak Relay

This was pretty fun, but after so much running i was glad to be in the second pair from our team to go out, just so i could rest after running around with all this young fit people. The course was around 2 buoys out in "Duck's Hospital" where i learnt to sail 17 years ago (yes in yr10....) I was paired up with Vander, a fit 20 something farm-boy footballer, who could out do me in any physical activity. Thankfully he slowed down for me, and created such a huge bow wave that i could surf the kayak back to shore behind him.

Other 15:00 [3] 2.5 km (6:00 / km)

11:40 AM. Point Sturt.
WOSOG Westventure Race - #7 Half 5km track

This event was just the second half of the 5km track from the "Red Shed" back to camp. By now we were about 5 min ahead of the other team, just because of our running speed was a little faster than the other team. By the time we got to the next changeover i was a little stuffed.

Other 15:00 [3]

11:55 AM. Point Sturt.
WOSOG Westventure Race - #8 Far-king Frisbee

By far the most infuriating event. One team member at a time threw a frisbee and tried to hit the target (a fire hydrant) in one throw from about 30m away. Our team was weaker than the other at frisbee and we lost the lead here. In the end we managed to nick the hydrant and were able to pass thanks to the adjudicator. We were about 5min behind the other team when we left this activity.
12 PM

Other 5:00 [3]

12:10 PM. Point Sturt.
WOSOG Westventure Race - #9 Poisonous Jelly

This activity was one from memory lane too. The whole team had to get across the "poisonous jelly" without touching it. The mil crates were the only thing immune to the jelly, and we were also give two planks of wood. Our bridge across survived no worries and we wasted little time here.

Other 5:00 [3] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)

12:15 PM. Point Sturt.
WOSOG Westventure Race - #10 High Bar

I still have little recollection of completing this task as i was in oxygen debt when we arrived at the high bar. This was a bar about 2.5m off the ground. The whole team had to get over, and once a team member was over, they weren't able to help the rest. Thankfully by the time i got up the hill, Vander had shot-put our other two team mates over the bar and was ready to launch me too. I hung on the bar to drag him up once he jumped on and the only thing to grab was his arse but i think this only helped through the sheer shock. We literally overtook the other team as they were going over the high bar too, and we left that area for our last task before they could get their third person on the ground.

Other 5:00 [3]

12:20 PM. Point Sturt.
WOSOG Westventure Race - #11 Knot Untying

The final task was untying the knots from the other teams rope. We pretty much ate this task up - we are the knot untying kings! before the other team were back at the hall we had finished the race and won!

Our trophy was a rather impressive Stainless Steel D Shackle. It was pretty impressive.

The other team were gracious in their defeat, and i don't think we lorded over them too much with our victory. To my team - Beth, Cam and Vander - well done, you pushed me pretty hard and we got a result. To the other team - Rob, Em, Gabbi and Hamish, better luck next time, the gloves are off for next year. And to our Adjudicators - Penny and Fern, thanks for keeping us in line!

Fern and I had a great weekend away with some old and new friends, we hope we do get to do it again next year!

Afternoon Jog

Went for a short, but apparently quickish run from camp at Point Sturt to the 3km "out" mark. Which made it 3km back again.
Fern and I are down at Point Sturt for the Westminster Old Scholars Outdoor Group's "Westventure Revisited" weekend. Where I pretty much got to revisit school camp from year 10. But all those memories are good, so why we are here. There was only a few eager participants, but proved the potential for the future. It was really good fun.

Lap of the 'dene

Fern went out for an earlier walk while i rushed some of the new Arrows' tops to Jenny to get to NSW. Dissapointed that we're still missing a lot of tops, and some of the crucial sizes (ie Simon and Susanne's.....) but nothing i can do about it now. We tried our best.

So after i got home again, i convinced myself (with Fern's help) to go out for a run. It was a pleasant night out and enjoyed the lap i did.

Narrinyeri Hills OY Event #2 Course: M21AS 5.8 km 145 m

This year I am only doing M21AS at OY events - i need another tumbler if i can earn it. Today was a lot of fun running in the regrowth of parts of the map that burnt maybe 2 summers ago? So it was entertaining to be able to see a long way in the scrub, but not see any of the rocks my control were on. I had a fair bit of luck with controls just appearing in front of me when i wanted them, and didn't lose too much time searching. Even if it was a little bingo-ish, it still was fun to pick off the smaller features on the legs to try and maintain direction. I had to stop twice - first time between 5 and 6 to pee on the world and the second time between 9 and 10 while my heart had it's usual hissy fit. Fern and i had to rush off after the event to a birthday party so didn't get to stop and chat with too many peeps at orienteering.

Pewsey Vale OY Event #1 Course: M21AS 6.2 km 140 m

Pretty fun day out in the forest. Didn't notice that #1 was in the wrong spot, nor #9, but taling to others in retrospect, it would seem to be the case. I was able to get myself to the circles pretty cleanly, but messed around a bit while there to find the correct feature. #6 frsutrated me since i never saw the boulder it was meant to be on, and the control was sort-of shoved between the bare rock and a yacka. Luckily spiked #9 despite having difficulty understanding the map without accurate vegetation mapped, and what was there didn't make too much sense. Made my first proper navigational error on the way to #10 where i mistook a cluster of rocks as the top of the hill, and missed the saddle i was aiming for. I stopped to help an injured Mel at #16 and got her back on her feet before completing my course. Took a couple of deep breaths after leaving Mel to make sure i didn't do anything silly which paid off. Went back towards where Mel was going to help her up the hill. She was fine, better to keep on your feet with a sprain than not.
Pewsey Vale remains to be a good map despite the obvious vegetation flaws due to logging, would love to see it back to it's glory days.
It was nice to have a BBQ at the event then follow that up with Lovell's Bakery in Birdwood - they have moved to a nice new building.

Belair and Olave Hill

It was certainly too nice an evening not to be outside, so i left work early (like i always do) got home, stuck my feet in some running shoes and went for a run. I got a stitch before even entering the park and then i really struggled to suck air in while going up the park boundary. There was a fair bit of smoke in the air which i think was affecting my lungs a small amount. It was nice and pleasant to run along Olave Hill Road. Looks like they are doing more road works on Olave Hill Road, must be a noisy resident with influence living along there, I can't even get council to cut down a feral tree. Now i get to put all the furniture back into our two bedrooms, yay!
