Run for Hannah - Federation Uni Mt Helen Campus Course: Senior Boys 2.9 km

After the Schools Sprint Champs, the adults got to have a go. Not many people could match the times of the kids though!!! Everything seemed prett straightforward with the course as long as you read the map and descriptions ahead. I didn't have any major hassles other than 9 where i misread the number of steps in the building i had to go around just coming into the circle. Then i didn't keep my map oriented leaving 9 and took a moment to re-orientate the map to keep going. I think i chose all the optimal route choices with the exception of 2-3 perhaps where i opted to avoid the assembly area and went around the east side of the big building instead. Jolly good fun.

Australian Middle Distance Championships - Petticoat Gully Course: M21A 4.4 km 145 m

After a bit of a warmup and a round-a-bout way to the start, i was pretty eager to get in the terrain again. Started off nice and slow again to get the navigation right early on. High-Fived some campers in the campsite before 2 as they were packing up, i must have looked impressive storming through then heading straight into the terrain again. I'd like to think so anyway. Slatts caught me by 5 and i led him through to 7 where he made a break for the lead. Probably stuffed the long leg to 12 as i came into the green creek at a crap spot and took ages to get through and out the other side. Stuffed up the short leg to 15 as i lost a bit of direction control and got suckered into a plainly visible control which wasn't mine. Then took the slow way to 16 following th read, then the awesome MTB track. I managed to catch a bit of time through 16 to 19 on Slatts, but not enough to beat him - he was very scrappy through the last technical section, where i seemed to blitz. Again, a very fun race and ended up third behind Slatts and Laurie!

Victorian Middle Distance Champs - Creswick Diggings Course: M21A 4.5 km 185 m

First proper race in terrain for quite some time, and in goldmining of all places! Went out pretty steadily to ensure i didn't stuff the first couple of legs. Settled into the race and took some wider options to avoid the denser green. I really struggled up the hills but loved the open running in the downhills. Felt pretty accurate in the navigation too until i hesitated and fluffed around number 9 until i realised i was far too far to the north of the circle. Other than that it was a good race. Ended up 3rd place behind Stuart and Slatts.

Ran with the C2B defectors from the country club. Up by lower falls i spotted a Bandicoot! My first sighting of one of these little critters in the wild. Simon and Wil spotted a snake not much further on. Then at Upper Falls, Simon explained to us how sattelites orbit without needing any thrust to do so. I sent Simon and Will on an extra loop, which timed in perfectly with us all meeting up at the bottom of Station Road. (they had to run down the Adventure Loop to the Redwoods and back up to the railway line. I spent most of the run bantering with Bridget as she's a good match in pace at the moment. Got back in time to meet the wife and toddler just getting back at the same time!

Felt like i ran ok. I found it quite hard to make quick decisions with the complex map in my hand. I think i found mst of the optimum route choices. It was a lot of fun too!

Managed to miss all the storms and even had the sun shining on my back on the way home. Unfortunately though after about 10 minutes my vision went all blurry and i got a big blind spot in my left eye. This hasn't happend for about 10 years i think and means that a migraine was starting.... I managed to keep going to Myrtle Bank to meet Fern and Patrick. Fern had to drive home because it was pretty bad. I couldn't even see the colour of traffic lights while i was running, luckily the pedestrian crossings all have audible alerts so i knew when to cross. Managed to struggle thorugh the evening routine with Patrick, but collapsed into bed before Patrick had even fallen asleep.
Felt fine the next day.

Navigated well, but orienteered pretty poorly on the whole. I read the map really well, but chose some pretty lousy, and lazy route choices. Starting late seems to make me a worse orienteer. Again today i really enjoyed the scenery and haven't seen the map so green for some time. It was nice. The wind caused havoc at the assembly area and made some of the legs hard to run. We managed to get out of there soon after the last finisher and missed the cold front going over the map. It was impressive to drive through though - not much rain, but one of the most obvious fronts i've ever encountered.

Beaut day in the Mid-North. Legs weren't realy up for the running challenge, but the brain was there at least. IT was pretty fun to be out on the map and i thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Had a couple of controls that were on non-existent ground features, though they were pretty prominent on paper, they just must have eroded off the landscape. Control 15 was fairly well misplaced, but the controller didn't seem to think so compared to the 4 M21A's that did think so.... That didn't really detract from the fun. I lost control of my direction from 23 to 24, even though i was trying really hard to aim left of the control, i veered about 150m right of the control, picking up on the fact that i was way too close to the yellow near 25.
