Wow. How much fun in Rogaining and Geocaching combined. I teamed up with Christofuffel from Team Smeg for the first time since about 1998 for a rogaine. I have to say that Geogaining is a lot harder than Rogaining. In Rogaining you can plan your route before hand and then simply go and execute that plan. In Geogaining you can't come up with a plan, you have to think on the fly. I like that idea, and it can lead to a whole lot more combinations of results than a rogaine. Plus the geocaches don't tend to stand out like the rogaine controls.
Our strategy was simple - find geocaches, start with the hard ones and make our way to the easy ones. Since both of us were a bit rusty on the geocaching side of things i thought we might have had trouble in the finding of the caches. We did have a little help to start with but i think we were searching with the Kettles on the first hard cache. I was lucky enough to find it and was almost sly enough to not expose the location to the Kettles, but i found out that i am human and i couldn't leave without giving away the location and karma ends up coming back to you anyway..... So we then made our way to 90 - the hard way through the prickly acacia bushes. and scrambled up to punch the control. We passed 81 on our way to 90 and thought we'd give 90 a crack first. So on the way back down we found the Kettles just finishing up their seach (succesfully) at 81 and thankfully removing all of our search time at that cache (though we still had to climb all the way to pecariously punch the cache). W darted off to the medium controls and discovered that 3 hours goes fast especially when you are whinging about Telstra. 50 was a nice change from the hard to the medium caches. We opted to try for all the medium caches, going to 71 after the central cache. We had some difficulty finding 71 with another team, but found a GC cache there in conjunction. Running more and more short of time we took off straight for 61. Within 100m of the cache we were both focussed on our GPS and walked waist deep straight into a hole - me first and Chris directly follwoing me. An interesting surprise that was since the grass didn't really indicate a hole.... By this stage we had about 45min remaining as we shot of to 20 to see how many bonus points we could get before being too late. The darkness had truly come in by the time we got to 20 and we found our selves with about 15min remaining when we were leaving the control so 20 was our last visit. We finished with 6min to spare.
Ok so we ended up winning much to our surprise, since we walked to whole way i wouldn't have been surprised if any runners could've taken out the event. Luck for us there were none. We ended up on 440 points and were kind ouf chuffed with our result. I have a new strategy for the next geogaine and hope to try it out...
Thanks Z and Sushilord for a well orgainsed event, and to SARA for the great Rogaine and pizzas. Our car on the way home was full of certificates since my girlfriend and her partner won the womens Rogaine and were 4th overall, yay for them!
