Schools Team Training

I'm not sure why i decided it would be a good idea to go and help, but i did. Followed Riley for the first course, he did ok, but failed to see a couple of optimum route choices.
I followed James for the second one and he acually did worse on the route choice, and i had fun taking the optimum choice and waiting for James at the controls.
The third course was a group course and i failed to keep with the group after 50m so i turned back and opted to collect controls while following Fern. I lost my car key. Luckily Fern had driven seperately there so it wasn't to hard to get home and back again with the spare key...

Mountain Design Adventure Race Australia Course: Run Leg

Karl and I took part in this Adventure Race together for the second time. We went down to Wirrina the night before in hopes of getting a good nights rest. No. I don't think i got to sleep until about 3:30am or 4:00am. Not sure why, i was tired and cranky when we got to Wirrina then as soon as my head hit the pillow - Hello World let's go do stuff.....
So feeling very bleary eyed we took off on the first Orienteering run leg. It was going well until we botched the navigation on the third control and ended back at the first. But so did a few other teams. For some reason after that i STILL let Karl navigate.
The rest of this leg was pretty uneventful but with an already tired body it was apparent that Karl was much fitter than me and that there was no chance of us winning.

MTB (Orienteering) 1:48:09 intensity: (25 @1) + (24:43 @2) + (1:03:21 @3) + (19:40 @4) 21.03 km (11.7 kph) +414m

Mountain Design Adventure Race Australia Course: MTBO Leg 1

The second leg was the MTBO leg which was pretty basic nav with moments of hunting for hidden controls. It wasn't as hard to find the flags this time around. We were to-ing and fro-ing with a couple of teams but we settled into a 4th place spot as we left the forest and headed down the hill to Wirrina Cove. The bit down from the forest behind Wirrina into the lake was pretty fun.
I had issues with my front deraileur all day. Oh and my legs really hated me for trying to make them ride up the hills. So they walked as punishment.

Orienteering race 16:05 intensity: (5:35 @2) + (10:30 @3) * 1.72 km (9:21 / km) +14m 9:00 / km

11:24 AM. Second Valley. Burned 118 calories.
Mountain Design Adventure Race Australia Course: Run Leg 2

The third leg was a short run leg back from the transistion area to the lake for the "special stage" I was feeling pretty knackered by now.

Kayaking 22:05 intensity: (11:15 @1) + (4:40 @2) + (6:10 @3) 0.06 km (6:08:03 / km) +3m 4:46:48 / km
ahr:128 max:156

11:40 AM. Second Valley. Burned 98 calories.
Mountain Design Adventure Race Australia Course: Special Leg

The special stage was a leg on the lake doing stand up paddle boarding to controls and back to the shore. There were three legs and only one team member had to go to each control. So Karl did 2 and I did the third. These boards weren't nearly as scary as i thought they would be so i found it fun and regretted not doing more of these legs. We were at the stage when the team in front of us were doing it and i had a chat with David Talbot for a while (ex Tjuringan) and then the team behind us checked in as we were about to start the third control. At this point we were still solidly fourth.

Orienteering race 1:07:52 intensity: (30 @1) + (6:42 @2) + (51:55 @3) + (8:45 @4) ** 7.35 km (9:14 / km) +200m 8:08 / km
ahr:152 max:169

12:02 PM. Second Valley. Burned 514 calories.
Mountain Design Adventure Race Australia Course: Run Leg 3

The second orienteering leg had us climbing big hills into the fog. Once we were on the top of the hill, my glasses were fogging up making it harder to navigate (which i didn't have to because Karl and the terrain diagram were inseparable). We had a couple of issues trying to find the control on the beach since the descriptions didn't stipulate which rocky outcrop and the map (terrain diagram) didn't show the outcrops at all. By this point though the end was in sight and i was looking forward to a good sit down...... until:

MTB (Orienteering) 39:12 intensity: (6:10 @2) + (32:37 @3) + (25 @4) ** 5.83 km (8.9 kph) +121m
ahr:149 max:160

1:10 PM. Second Valley. Burned 235 calories.
Mountain Design Adventure Race Australia Course: MTBO Leg 2

Just as we thought we were about to finish there were additional instructions at the last control. A surprise Bike leg..... Whcih meant we had to go to the finish, collect our bikes and leave the bar and bbq behind us. I was completely knackered and really ready to pass out, my legs were even worse. I spent more time off the bike walking on this stage than on it. As we hit the hill Troy and Brett were coming back down it on their way home to a second place. At the top we found Scotty and David almost finishing. This bit was too challenging and i was glad to be on the homeward stretch. We finally got to the finish with bigger than expected applause and congratulations from the First and Third placed teams, while the Second placed team (Troy and Brett) were taking privelage of their hot shower.
Karl did well to put up with me and i did well putting up with Karl. This year i was alot less fit than him and there were a few times where i had to tell Karl to "Settle down, it isn't that important" Since i basically knew that we wouldn't lose our 4th place and weren't likely to gain the 3rd place.
I slept for 12 hours that night.
