Hockey (Match) 1:35:00 [4]

Glynn's Memorial Weekend in Aberystwyth... Time to educate the Students in the art of Old Boy Hockey...

Went down Friday day, drank, then went home at about 0230, then up at 1000 to watch the uni second team play poorly to get a 1-1 draw against Cardiff Medics.

Chilled out afternoon including a drive around Aber looking at the changes(Welsh assembly buildings built on a floodplain, anybody?) then fell asleep in the car on the seafront looking forward to Constitution Hill, and left to the setting sun over the sea...

Met up with the others (about 30 buy this point) on Saturday evening for another beer, and then the numbers swelled steadily until the Sherry Toast in Beechings, by which time there were about 60-70 people in the social...

Sunday morning went up to the Hockey pitch for the actual matches (I knew I'd get round to the exercise eventually!!). First one was 2x20 minute halves of us (The Old Old Boys) Vs the Old boys. Disappointingly the Old boys fielded a rather good (awesome) team and screwed us about 4-1. Fortunately they're all getting older and will eventually end up playing for us...

Second match was against the current Students who got it into their heads that their Aber was better than our Aber... I think not. 35 minute opening half and then a 20 minute second half allowed us to play well and win 1-0. The new boys were not impressed as it was mostly their first team that play together week in week out beaten by a bunch of old giffas who mostly don't play any more and have rocked up with hangovers and beer bellys. They also got beaten by the Old boys... As it should be...

Overall played pretty well, in the second game I managed about 10 of the hardest hits I've ever hit in a row with pinpoint accuracy on the ground...rare eh?. I wasn't too badly hungover which was nice, but I was very stiff after the match after jumping straight into the car and blasting back to Yorkshire... playing with a few cars en-route. The 3 hour 30 minute journey time was reasonable (181 miles, about half on motorways and in towns, the rest on twisty A roads ;-) ), and managing to do it on just over 1/2 of a tank of petrol was exceptional!!

Little mention of sport in this training entry, but the important thing was I ran around a lot, enjoyed myself, and beat the new boys at hockey. Result!!
