No hurry the first few miles, but then I seem to have started working harder. Now that I think back, the reason was that my bike was making noises, which I figured was from the gears being a little off (cables stretch). Seventh and eighth, my usual spots on flattish terrain, were noisy, so I tried ninth and that was quieter, so that's where I stayed. And worked harder pushing it.

First part was heading north on Rt. 5 through Deerfield, bit of a headwind. Stopped three times to fiddle with the gears, but nothing helped. And the bike was making more and more noise. So left it in ninth, working pretty hard as a result, seemed to take my mind off the noise.

Eventually got home. Quickest ride of the year. Nothing had broken (me or the bike). No hills to speak of but the quads had had a good workout. :-)

And then took the bike off to the shop, where I seem to be on the VIP list for service. Took care of me immediately, a little adjustment here and there, a little lube (which I had been neglecting recently, boo), and I was good to go.

Or at least good to go for a test ride tomorrow to see if that really solved the problem. If not, well, the bottom bracket might need some attention.
