hike with Gail 1:13:27 [1] 4.22 mi (17:24 / mi) +2ft 17:24 / mi

On Wye Island. A little bit of very light rain. Note that the climb calculated by AP is pretty accurate. :-)

Two highlights. First was a visit to the 275+ years old holly tree. Really quite something.

Second was a short chat with a park worker who had just finished pumping the water out of one of the four "pits" on the island. The pits are holes in the ground, boards for flooring, a roof of some sort, and various types of vegetation for camouflage, the purpose to provide a spot where grown men (and sometimes women) can spend a few hours trying to shoot geese. Because the pits are at sea level, they tend to fill up with water. Hence the regular pumping.

I did find one thing hard to believe, namely, that there were no adult beverages allowed, but he assured us that plenty of adult beverages were consumed afterwards.

A couple of times we had heard shots during our walk, though they seemed to be some distance away. I asked why it seemed we were hearing 5 to 10 shots each time. Wasn't the point to nail the goose on the first shot. Well, he said with a big smile on his face, that pretty much sums it up.

Should I feel safer or less safe that there are a bunch of lousy shots out there?
