Seemed the day to do something that involved the number 76. :-)

76 miles on the bike seemed not unreasonable. I've been thinking about a loop around Quabbin Reservoir, something I've done maybe half a dozen times. It can be done in about 70 miles, so a little more has to be added. It seemed a reasonable challenge.

And it was, but boy was it hard. One of those days when there was no zip in the legs starting out. Sometimes after I've been going for a while things get loosened up or warmed up and I start feeling better. But not today. I got tired early, and then just kept getting more and more tired.

But what can you do? There have certainly been times when I've cut things short, way short even. But this? Once you're out there, there really is no choice, you just keep going.

The other factor besides my dead legs was the wind. Fierce. Out of the south, generally, 15-20 mph and gusty and swirling, and it sure made things harder. I'd planned a route where the last 10 miles was a straight shot, due north, flat, out in the open, sailing along with the wind. Sure needed that, But even so, I was turning the pedals, but if I had a power meter on my bike, I'm sure the output of watts would have been a real low number.

For the 65 miles before that, the only saving grace was I always seemed to have a lower gear (or two or three), and always seemed to need them. But I got up all the hills eventually, and never actually got blown off my bike. Didn't even get off my bike, as I wasn't sure if I could manage to get back on.

Two items of pleasure. The first, just satisfaction at hanging in there. The second, stopping the Garmin at the usual spot on the driveway, seeing it read 76.01. Far enough, with a margin of error just in case. If you're only getting paid (psychologically) for 76, there's not really any point in doing more.

Next year? I'd really be happy if things were just back to normal.
