trail running 1:17:15 [3]
ahr:139 max:160

On Mt. Toby with Phil. Beautiful late afternoon, would have been even nicer if I hadn't eaten just before we went out....

Tuesday Apr 27, 2004 #

trail running 1:09:25 [3] 8.2 mi (8:28 / mi)
ahr:147 max:168

Robert Frost loop on Mt. Toby. Still tired from Sunday, but felt better after a while and ran the last 20 minutes hard.

biking 54:15 [3] 15.3 mi (3:33 / mi)
ahr:133 max:151

Leverett loop, moderate effort, very windy.

orienteering 2:02:40 [4] 13.1 km (9:22 / km) +1526ft 7:57 / km
ahr:150 max:173

26th Billygoat, 25 years almost to the day from the first one, also at Mt. Tom. An ok run, but was tired right from the start (legs felt heavier loosening up). See comments with the splits.
My race didn't end at the finish line, however. I've been working for about five years on a project to build a new library in Sunderland, and today was the grand opening. Ribbon cutting at 1:30, then speeches and socializing. Had to be there. It's a 20-25 minute drive, add a few minutes to change clothes, and I figured I had to be in by 1 at the latest (or 2 hours running time). I must have checked my watch a dozen times, getting increasingly pessimistic that I was going to make it. Even with getting charged up to stay ahead of Clint at the end, it was 1:02 before I finished. Kept runnig to the car, stripped everything off, grabbed the clean stuff, and I was heading out the gate at 2:08. Fast as I could up 91, and I hustled up to the front of the new building right at 1:29, just as someone was saying, Where's Peter?
Hated to miss the postmortom at the Billygoat, but sometimes you have to make choices. The ceremony at the library was just right, and being there was the right choice.
Back to the BG -- a tough and very interesting course, and a place of honor in the future BG Hall of Fame for Head Goat Will Hawkins.

orienteering 31:25 [5] 3.67 km (8:34 / km) +230ft 7:49 / km
ahr:156 max:170

Billgoat Short O', Red course. Good solid run, one small mistake at 6 (maybe 30 seconds), the only time I wasn't in solid contact with the map. Legs felt good.

track 25:00 [2]

Warm up, cool down

track 4:02 [5] 1.2 km (3:22 / km)

Didn't plan to do too much, did even less, couple of 400s (84,82) and a couple of 200s (38, 37), all as quick as I could with a decent rest between. Just trying to get the legs turning over a little quicker.

Wednesday Apr 21, 2004 #

trail running 11:20 [3]

To the start of the O' course.

orienteering 1:12:45 [3] 7.32 km (9:56 / km) +853ft 8:26 / km

Training course in Conway SF using the USGS, blown up to about 1:17,000. Decent effort, but had a hard time moving in the rougher/thicker parts, plus a bunch of falls....

Tuesday Apr 20, 2004 #

biking 52:57 [3] 15.3 mi (3:28 / mi) +755ft 3:18 / mi
ahr:130 max:151

Leverett loop.

woods running 1:22:00 [3]

With Ken Walker in the hills behind his house. Easy pace, except for all the uphills. Woods varied from nice to trashy. Fun outing!

Monday Apr 19, 2004 #

biking 1:12:00 [2]

Easy ride with Walter in the Conway hillls.

Sunday Apr 18, 2004 #

orienteering 52:10 [4] 5.9 km (8:51 / km)
ahr:148 max:164

WCOC local meet at Brookvale. Warm day, felt tired, but not too bad. Routes and comments.

orienteering 33:15 [3] 3.6 mi (9:14 / mi)
ahr:144 max:161

After a short break did the Orange course. No energy or will power every time it went uphill.

Saturday Apr 17, 2004 #

rogaining 2:48:00 [1]

An outing with Fred in Savoy SF, mostly walking. Trashy forest, steep in places, good practice.

Friday Apr 16, 2004 #

track 44:16 [2] 5.25 mi (8:26 / mi)

Before (a couple miles on the track), in between, and after (a couple miles on easy trails) the intervals.

track 8:48 [5] 1.5 mi (5:52 / mi)
max:169

6 x 400 (87.3, 88.9, 85.8, 88.2, 87.1, 84.5) with a slow 400 in between. Last one was harder effort - I thought we were doing eight, but Phil announced that #6 was his last, so there was no choice. Felt lousy to start, a little better as time went on. Windy and a bit cold.

Note

Tax season is over! Hooray.
Managed to do really good training despite working plenty of hours. Mainly just made it a priority - scheduled time to run early each afternoon and worked earlier and later to make up. Also had lots of runs in the terrain (off trails). There was one day when I started trying that and it was such good fun despite the snow and slop that I just kept doing it. Much better training for O'. Also dropped about 7 pounds to get back to where I used to be.

Thursday Apr 15, 2004 #

trail running 54:52 [3]
ahr:144 max:162

Perimeter trail at Northfield Mountain, pretty good effort.

Wednesday Apr 14, 2004 #

part trail, part woods 1:03:43 [3]
ahr:147 max:166

Willis Hill in Montague. All but the first few and last few minutes were in the woods, so I was soon soaking wet even though it hadn't rained since last night. Good effort, working on running technique (picking the feet up, maintaining momentum over deadfall, running a straighter line....).

Monday Apr 12, 2004 #

trail running 48:02 [3]

On Poet's Seat ridge above Greenfield, all I had time for.

Sunday Apr 11, 2004 #

trail running 1:15:50 [3]

Didn't have much enthusiasm so I picked a relatively flat route, and one I hadn't done for a while. From Mill River Rec. Area to Depot Road and back. Tired and a bit sore to start, a little better on the way back. 40:50 out (included missing a turn), 35 back.

Saturday Apr 10, 2004 #

trail running 2:35:46 [4] 16.0 mi (9:44 / mi) +3445ft 8:05 / mi
ahr:155 max:165

Northern Nipmuck Trail Race in northern Connecticut, good steady threshold effort. Time was about 2 minutes better than 3 years ago, only other time I ran it. 11th out of about 70.

Thursday Apr 8, 2004 #

track 25:15 [2]

Warm-up, cool-down.

track 16:28 [5] 2.5 mi (6:35 / mi)
ahr:160 max:172

8 x (400 @ 90-93, 100 @ 30-32). A few quarters with a short recovery, good effort.

Wednesday Apr 7, 2004 #

trail running 49:48 [3]

Out early to look for my glasses. Got lucky, found them about 10 yards downhill from where I'd been looking yesterday. Then ran on the power line -- it cuts across a bunch of spurs and reentrants, up and down, up and down.

Tuesday Apr 6, 2004 #

part trail, part woods 46:40 [3]

Out along the power line in Gill, continually up and down, back for much of the way in the woods along the line until semi-disaster struck -- glasses got flipped off by a branch and I couldn't find them. After 10 minutes I gave up, marked the spot, and headed back. Running and driving were a bit interesting (my eyes focus about 8" in front of me, perfect for reading a map but not much else), but fortunately Gail was home and could bring a back-up pair up to work. Have to head out first thing in the morning to look some more.

Monday Apr 5, 2004 #

part trail, part woods 55:20 [3]
ahr:144 max:161

Willis Hill in Montague. Moderate effort, legs not so bad. Need to keep up the woods running, it makes a difference.

Sunday Apr 4, 2004 #

trail running 5:00 [2]

Warm-up. Legs felt heavy.

orienteering 57:07 [4] 7.5 km (7:37 / km) +935ft 6:24 / km
ahr:151 max:165

Day 2 at Ansonia. Tired legs, but my orienteering was really sharp. Hung in there ok on the running, but still felt slow. Routes and comments .
A very fine weekend by WCOC!

Saturday Apr 3, 2004 #

trail running 10 [2]

Warm-ups

orienteering 31:22 [5] 3.75 km (8:22 / km) +459ft 7:03 / km
ahr:161 max:175

WCOC A meet, day 1 at Osborndale, short course. Red course. Good run, just one small miss, 15 seconds or so. Had to walk parts of hills up to 1, 7, and 8. Frustrated at the time, but in retrospect I was already at full effort at the base of 7 and 8 and was quickly going under. Overall good hard effort and I was orienteering better than in Missouri.

orienteering 19:00 [5] 2.5 km (7:36 / km) +394ft 6:08 / km
ahr:159 max:175

Relay to raise funds for the team. Ran second leg, Nadim was first, Mihai anchor. Another good hard effort. And a very fun event, both the auction and the relay.

Thursday Apr 1, 2004 #

part trail, part woods 1:03:15 [3]

With JJ in Montague. Steady rain, mid-40s, not real pleasant, but after a while everything was soaking wet so it didn't really matter.
I wonder how good JJ could be if he trained....
